Stock Watch: Coulter crushing for Rattlers

Brewers backstop is healthy and mashing in the Midwest League

Clint Coulter has already set a career high with eight homers this season. (Emily Jones/MiLB.com)

Once a week this season, we're going to break down the prospects who have done the most to move the needle on their prospect stock, mostly highlighting players on the rise, but also pointing out a few who are struggling against expectations. Note: All stats are through games played on Monday.

Trending up

Brewers C Clint Coulter, Class A Wisconsin

He doesn't like to use recycled phrases, but to explain his stellar numbers to date, it's really the best Milwaukee's 2013 first-round (27th overall) pick can do.

"It's kind of a cliche to say I've simplified things, but really, that's what it is," the 20-year-old Coulter said. "You have to let your eyes see the ball, be short to it and swing at good pitches."

That simplification has worked. Coulter's numbers to date have been outstanding this season. Through Monday, he's hitting .301 with as many walks (23) as strikeouts. He's slugged eight homers, including one in three consecutive games last week.

All of this comes after Coulter was limited to 70 games strung across three levels in 2013. The cause of his struggles was mostly injury. Coulter struggled with an injury in the cartilage of his right wrist that only healed with rest and rehab in the offseason. He also strained his MCL abductor and spent six weeks on the disabled list with an oblique strain.

Amid all of that, Coulter was trying to get used to facing 90-plus-mph fastballs on a regular basis -- a big adjustment from his days playing high school ball in Washington. In all, he hit .244 with seven homers, 60 strikeouts and 20 walks in the 250 at-bats he took.

Coulter credits his success thus far to a clearer head and more experience against the quicker pitching, but he's also made some visible adjustments to his swing since last year, too. The first two videos below are of Coulter with Wisconsin in 2013. Of note is that Coulter uses a fairly standard leg lift to start his swing, and as he pulls his hands into his load, he tilts the barrel of the bat toward the pitcher. His load is relatively short, though.

This year, Coulter has ditched the standard leg lift and is instead using a sort of double toe tap. The move is keeping him from drifting toward the mound, keeping his head stable and in better position to see the ball steadily from the pitcher's hand on its path toward the plate. He's also quieted his hands even more, using a minimal load and letting his natural strength and bat speed generate power.

"I was always kind of a quiet guy," Coulter said of his swing. "The first year, I got in trouble when I tried to go out and get the ball. I had more movement in my stride and everything. Being quiet, moving less, I'm a big believer in being able to see the ball. If i can see it, I can recognize breaking pitches but also get good pitches to hit."

Final: Fort Myers 4, Brevard County 3

Ninth inning rally falls short in 4-3 loss to Miracle

Manatees drop third straight game to Fort Myers

By Justin Rocke / Brevard County Manatees

Brevard County center fielder Tyrone Taylor, seen here in a game from earlier this season, went 2-for-4 with a double and a RBI in a 4-3 loss to the Fort Myers Miracle on Wednesday afternoon at Space Coast Stadium. Taylor leads all of Minor League Baseball with 19 doubles. (Kasey Femmel/EFSC)

VIERA, Fla. - Trailing by two runs, the Brevard County Manatees loaded the bases with nobody out in the ninth inning, but could not complete the rally, as they fell 4-3 to the Fort Myers Miracle on Wednesday afternoon at Space Coast Stadium.

Miracle reliever Tyler Jones walked Garrett Cooper and Parker Berberet to start the inning. Brandon Macias followed by laying a perfect bunt down the third base line for a single to load the bases.

Jones then buckled down as he retired Nathan Orf on a fly out to center. Orlando Arcia would hit a sacrifice fly to right to score Cooper and to bring Tyrone Taylor to the plate with two outs. The center fielder hit a ball hard to third, but Niko Goodrum was able to make the play and throw on to second for the force out to end the game.

Fort Myers (23-16) got all the runs they needed when they put together a four-run first inning. After retiring the leadoff batter, Manatees' starter Jed Bradley (4-2, 3.20 ERA) struggled with his control.

The southpaw surrendered a single to Goodrum, followed by a walk to Jorge Polanco. After Polanco was caught stealing second on a double steal, Bradley let Dalton Hicks reach on a walk before hitting Travis Harrison with a pitch to load the bases.

Adam Brett Walker stepped up to the plate and proceeded to hit a high fly ball to right. Orf tracked it all the way to the wall before making a leaping attempt to try and keep the ball from going over the wall. However, the right fielder's attempt came up empty as Walker's grand slam put Fort Myers in front, 4-0.

Bradley would settle down after that opening frame as he did not allow another run or walk over his final five innings of work. The reigning Florida State League Pitcher of the Week scattered nine hits and struck out a season-low two hitters.

Brevard (20-18) would rally to cut the lead in half in the bottom of the first. Miracle starter David Hurlbut (3-1, 1.62) allowed back-to-back singles to Orf and Arcia to begin the inning, bringing Taylor the plate.

With runners on the corners, Taylor hit a ground ball to third, but an errant throw by Goodrum allowed the Manatees to get on the board. Cameron Garfield would follow with a sacrifice fly to cut Fort Myers' advantage to 4-2, but that is all Brevard County would be able push across.

Much like Bradley, Hurlbut would not allow another run for the remainder of his outing. The left-hander allowed eight hits, walked one and struck out two.

Despite going 1-for-9 with runners in scoring position, the Manatees were led offensively by Taylor and Alfredo Rodriguez, who each had two-hit games. Taylor picked up his Minor League Baseball-leading 19th double and his team-leading 22nd RBI.

Tom Gorzelanny, who just joined the Manatees on a Major League rehab assignment from Milwaukee, threw two scoreless innings in relief of Bradley. He allowed one hit and one walk, while striking out one.

The Manatees will look to avoid the sweep when they take on the Miracle in the final game of the four-game series on Thursday night at 6:35 p.m. Brevard County will turn to right-hander Jorge Lopez (4-2, 4.11) who is looking for his fourth consecutive victory. Fort Myers will counter with right-hander Alex Wimmers (2-2, 4.00).

Brevard County Box Score

Not Jed Bradley's best start of the year. Nine hits, two walks and four runs in six innings. Tom Gorzelanny made a rehab appearance pitching two scoreless innings of relief. Tyrone Taylor continued to be a bright spot offensively, going 2-for-4 with a walk and yet another double. Alfredo Rodriguez also had a two hit game.

Stars Drop Season Finale To Chattanooga

Chattanooga, TN - The Chattanooga Lookouts, the Double-A Affiliate of the Los Angeles Dodgers, belted four home runs on their way to scoring a season high seventeen runs as they won game five of their series with the Huntsville Stars, 17-6 Wednesday morning at AT&T Field.

The Stars had leads of 4-0, 4-3 and 5-3 but couldn't hang on.

In the fourth inning, the Lookouts tied the game against Huntsville starter Jacob Barnes (0-1). Daniel Mayora hit his fourth home run of the year, a two-run shot knotting the game up at 5-5. Darnell Sweeney gave the Lookouts the lead for good in that inning on his RBI single.

Barnes, who took his first decision of the season, went 3.2 innings giving up seven hits on six earned runs.

The Lookouts, who led 6-5, expanded their lead in the fifth inning.

The Lookouts posted eight runs, seven of which were scored against reliever Kevin Shackelford. Shackelford was able to retire the first batter O'Koyea Dickson. The next batter however, Scott Schebler, popped one up behind second base, where Greg Hopkins couldn't locate the ball in the sun. Schebler wound up at second base with a double. Things unraveled from there. Chris O'Brien made it 7-5 on his RBI double.

Noel Cuevas produced a two-run triple making it 9-5. The next batter, pinch hitter Brian Cavazos-Galvez, singled home a run making it 10-5. The Lookouts weren't finished. Erisbel Arruebarrena and Jeremy Hazelbaker followed with back to back RBI doubles, making it 12-5. Dickson would also hit a two-run homer against Tommy Toledo giving Chattanooga a 14-5 advantage.

Hazelbaker hit a two-run homer in the seventh for the Lookouts and then pinch hitter Ryan Adams hit their fourth home run of the day in the ninth making it 17-6.

The seventeen runs the Stars gave up today were a season high. The Lookouts hit four home runs, one against Barnes, two against Toledo and one against Eric Marzec.

The Stars jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the second inning. Josh Prince led off with a solo HR to left field. It was Prince's second of the series and his second on the year. Nick Shaw bunted for an RBI single increasing the lead to 2-0. Barnes was able to score on a throwing error by O'Brien who attempted a pick-off throw at first base. Nick Ramirez blooped a single into center-field giving the Stars a 4-0 lead.

Ramirez finished 3-5 with two RBI and was a home run away from hitting for the cycle.

Chattanooga improves to 16-23, while the Stars are still a Southern League best 26-14.

The Stars head back to Huntsville and will begin a five-game series Thursday night with the Birmingham Barons, the Double-A Affiliate of the Chicago White Sox, at Joe Davis Stadium. The Stars will have RHP Tyler Cravy (6-1, 1.93) on the mound. Birmingham will feature RHP Nick McCully (2-2, 5.29). The game can be heard with Steve Jarnicki starting at 6:15 pm on 92.9 FM, 1450 AM, and wtkiradio.com.

Huntsville Box Score

So many positive pitching success stories up and down the chain in 2014, but it's been a rough go for the most part for 40-man roster RHP Kevin Shackelford, and Wednesday morning's outing is really going to skew his numbers for weeks to come.

Nick Ramirez, Jason Rogers, and Adam Weisenburger all reached base three times. Things looked sweet after the four-run top of the 2nd.

Astin & Brennan pace Rattlers win over Quad Cities

Wisconsin wins 5-1 behind 3-run double by Brennan and 7Ks from Astin

By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers

GRAND CHUTE, WI - The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers got one big inning on Wednesday night and it was enough to beat the Quad Cities River Bandits 5-1. Taylor Brennan broke a 1-1 tie with a three-run double in the fourth inning. Starting pitcher Barrett Astin allowed one run over six innings and picked up his fourth win of the season.

The teams traded runs in the first inning. Brett Phillips doubled to start the game for Quad Cities (18-20). A sacrifice bunt moved him to third base. Jack Mayfield drove in Phillips with a grounder to short and the Bandits led 1-0. Wisconsin (18-20) responded with an unearned run in the bottom of the first. Chris McFarland reached second base on a throwing error after a infield grounder. Clint Coulter lined a single to left-center to drive in McFarland with the tying run.

The Rattlers broke the tie with four runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. Coulter started the rally with a single. Jose Pena and Michael Ratterree drew consecutive walks to load the bases with no outs. Brennan unloaded the bases with a double down the line in left. All three runners scored and the Rattlers were up 4-1. Angel Ortega drove in Brennan with a two-out double to make the score 5-1 in favor of Wisconsin.

Astin made that lead hold for Wisconsin. The Rattlers starting pitcher struck out seven walked one, and allowed three hits over six innings while not allowing another run after the top of the first inning. His seven strikeouts were the most for him in a game as a professional.

Rodolfo Fernandez took over in the top of the seventh inning and worked three scoreless innings - with help from his defense - for his first save of the season.

Quad Cities had a runner on first and two outs in the top of the seventh and Brett Booth drove a pitch deep to left-center. Omar Garcia made a long run, dove to make an amazing catch, and held on to the ball for the final out as he landed hard on the warning track near the River Bandits bullpen.

The Bandits loaded the bases with one out in the top of the eighth inning. Fernandez got the last two hitters of the frame with a strikeout and a grounder to second to strand the runners.

Fernandez tossed a routine 1-2-3 inning in the top of the ninth to close out the game.

Wisconsin took two of three games from the River Bandits and went 4-2 on their six-game homestand.

The Timber Rattlers begin a four-game series at Dozer Park against the Peoria Chiefs in Illinois on Thursday night. Tristan Archer (1-1, 4.30) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers. Blake McKnight (1-2, 7.23) is set to pitch for the Chiefs. Game time is 6:30pm. Tune in for the action on AM1280, WNAM or IHeartRadio starting with the pregame show at 6:10pm.

WP: Barrett Astin (4-2)

LP: Evan Grills (1-1)

SAVE: Rodolfo Fernandez (1)

TIME: 2:10

ATTN: 3,501

The postgame from Chris includes the usual assortment of pics, interviews, and highlights, including Omar Garcia's awesome catch mentioned in the game story.

Postgame Post – May 14, 2014

Wisconsin Boxscore

I didn't get to watch any of this game but I do have it DVR'd so when I catch up I'll post some additional thoughts, Barrett Astin's 6 innings look to be intriguing.

Clint Coulter (2-4) and Angel Ortega (2-3,2B) had the multi-hit games for the T-Rats in this one. Clint was the DH again today for the 2nd day in a row, he's now caught just 21 of the Rattlers' 38 games. You have to wonder if that pace is going to pick up or not as the season progresses considering how much work he has to do defensively yet.

Sounds' home field home runs are few

by Nick Cole, The Tennessean

The Sounds return home Thursday from a road trip on which they collected home runs in a season-best five consecutive games.

It's a trend that fans hope will continue as Nashville begins a nine-game homestand against Oklahoma City and Omaha.

During the previous homestand, the Sounds went homerless in seven of eight games. Just seven of the Sounds' 31 home runs this season have come at Greer Stadium.

Although the dimensions of Greer Stadium are fairly neutral (327 feet in left and right field, 400 feet to center field), many of the other Pacific Coast League stadiums are known as more hitter-friendly.

"It's tough here — to the gaps especially," Sounds outfielder Caleb Gindl said. "We call it getting 'Greered' sometimes because of the wind, but that's just how it is."

And the splits are noticeable. Only infielder Taylor Green has hit more home runs at home (two) than on the road (one) among the team's top six home run hitters.

The other five, led by Hunter Morris with five home runs, have combined to hit 18 of their 19 long balls away from Greer Stadium.

Mills dealing: Opposing hitters have had all kinds of trouble with Sounds starting pitcher Brad Mills in May.

The left-hander has yet to allow an earned run in three starts this month. Mills has struck out 17 batters and allowed just five hits over the stretch of 19 innings.

With six scoreless innings in Tuesday's 8-0 win over Iowa, Mills moved into second place in the Pacific Coast League with a 1.45 ERA in 37 1/3 innings this season. He also ranks third in the league with a 0.86 WHIP.

Cubbie blues: The Sounds stumped Chicago Cubs top prospect Javier Baez during their recent four-game set with Iowa.

The shortstop, whom Baseball America ranks as the No. 5 prospect in all of minor-league baseball, went 1-for-17 with nine strikeouts against the Sounds.

It has been a rough season for the highly touted middle infielder. He holds a .147 batting average and has struck out in 47 of his 102 at-bats this season.

Baez made his only hit in the series count, driving in the game-winning run in the 10th inning of a 2-1 win over Monday.

Gindl returns: After receiving an opportunity to play with Milwaukee following an injury to Brewers outfielder Ryan Braun, Gindl has been optioned back to Triple-A to resume his fourth season with the Sounds.

Gindl saw action in eight games over his 11-day span with the Brewers but collected just three hits in 19 at-bats (.154).

Utilityman Elian Herrera received the call-up to replace Gindl. He was 14-of-27 over his last week of action with the Sounds.
