Via Adam McCalvy --

(Gord) Ash expressed optimism about striking deals to extend the Brewers' player development contracts with Triple-A Nashville and Double-A Huntsville before those agreements expire this fall. Both franchises are moving into new ballparks next year, with the Double-A franchise moving to Biloxi, Miss.

Ash said that PDC talks with those clubs, plus Class A Advanced Brevard County and rookie-level Helena, will probably gain steam after the July 31 non-waiver Trade Deadline.

"In both situations," Ash said, referring specifically to Nashville and Huntsville/Biloxi, "there's been good dialogue. There were some requests, and we've met all of them and both teams are playing well."

Ash was in Nashville last week and met with the Sounds' new ownership. He visited the construction site of the team's future home.

Buck Farmer, rhp, West Michigan (Tigers): At 23 in low Class A ball, one could argue Farmer is doing what he should: dominate. The 2013 fifth-rounder and former Friday starter for Georgia Tech had his fifth straight quality start (six innings, six hits, one runs, three walks, 6 strikeouts) and is now tied for the MWL with four wins, while taking over the strikeout lead (49) from South Bend’s Aaron Blair.

He's so far exceeded even the relatively lofty expectations I had for him coming into this season. I can't believe he fell so far in the draft.

The May numbers are less than 30 ABs, but he is definitely having a good month with an OPS over .900. I certainly want to see it continue, but given his age and the level jump I'd definitely start to get really excited if he keeps it up for the rest of the month. It could be very justifiable to write April off. Meanwhile Coulter just keeps hitting. His stock has to be rising pretty well.

Nelson with 88 pitches through 5... which is a common theme in our system, it would be nice to have a couple of guys whom project as 2s that could consistently attack through the strike zone and be more efficient.

edit. I should add that some errors cost him extra pitches but I'd really like to see him pitch through 6, which seems unlikely given that for 2 years now most Brewers pitchers seem to be operating on an 85 pitch limit.

edit 2. he's batting, so hopefully that means he's coming back out for the 6th, nice.

Now a 3rd error which extends Nelson's outing. At rate Jimmy is having a really nice 6th, I love the 4 pitch strike out to Ynoa and a 5 pitch strike out to Garcia, no messing around with full counts or wasting pitches, just attacking. Nelson just got out of the 6th, 104 pitches and 69 were strikes, not too shabby.

Rattlers score two in ninth to beat Kane County 5-3

Denson homers, drives in three for Wisconsin

By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers

GENEVA, IL - The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers were 0-5 against the Kane County Cougars in 2014 as the teams headed into the final game of their three-game set Wednesday at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark. Wisconsin topped Kane County 5-3 and snapped that winless streak against the team with the best record in the Midwest League with some clutch hits and a couple of big strikeouts in the bottom of the ninth.

The Cougars (23-10) struck first. Ben Carhart drew a two-out walk in the bottom of the first. Yasiel Balaguert blooped in a double down the right field line and Carhart just beat the throw to the plate for a 1-0 lead.

David Denson gave the Rattlers (14-18) the lead in the top of the second inning. Omar Garcia singled with one out. The left-handed Denson lifted a fly to left that carried over the fence for an opposite field, two-run homer. Denson's second home run of the year gave the Rattlers a 2-1 advantage.

Shawon Dunston, Jr. got the Cougars back to even in the bottom of the second inning. Cael Brockmeyer started the inning with a single, but he was still at first with two outs. A passed ball with Dunston at the plate moved Brockmeyer into scoring position. Dunston would dropped in a broken-bat single to center on a 3-2 pitch from Taylor Williams and Brockmeyer scored to tie the game again.

Jake Hanneman tripled to start the bottom of the fifth inning for Kane County. He scored on a wild pitch by Williams and Kane County was up 3-2.

Cougars starting pitcher Justin Amlung retired thirteen straight Wisconsin hitters after the home run by Denson. Clint Coulter broke that string with another home run. Coulter's two-out, solo home run evened the game 3-3. That long ball was the sixth of the season for Coulter.

Wisconsin went back in front in the top of the ninth inning. Taylor Brennan and Garcia singled with one out to place Rattlers on first and second. Denson singled to right and Brennan scored to put the Rattlers up 4-3. Garcia went around to third on the single.

Angel Ortega's squeeze bunt was enough to get Garcia home with the second run of the inning and Wisconsin took a 5-3 lead to the bottom of the ninth.

Tyler Alexander, who took over for Williams in the bottom of the seventh inning, gave up a one out double and a single in the bottom of the ninth. That put the tying runs on base and brought the winning run to the plate. But, the left-handed Alexander struck out Hannemann and Carlos Penalver to close out the Wisconsin victory.

The Rattlers return to Neuroscience Group Field at Fox Cities Stadium on Thursday to begin a six-game, seven-day homestand. The first opponents are the Cedar Rapids Kernels.

Wisconsin had named Barrett Astin (3-2, 4.18) as their scheduled starting pitcher. The Kernels have Felix Jorge (2-2, 7.15) as their starter. Game time is 6:35pm.

The first 1,000 fans to attend Thursday's game will receive a poster of Timber Rattlers pitcher Taylor Williams courtesy of Dunkin Donuts. All fans can enjoy a 22-oz soda, a 16-oz beer, or an Arty's Old Fashioned drink for just $2 as part of Thirsty Thursday presented by Arty's Old Fashioned and 95.9 KISS FM.

If you can't make it out to the ballpark, there are several ways to catch the action. Time Warner Cable SportsChannel will televise the game starting at 6:30pm. The radio broadcast may be heard on AM1280, WNAM or IHeartRadio starting with that pregame show at 6:15pm. Subscribers to MiLB.tv may watch the game over the internet.

HOME RUNS:

Finally... Just. Beat. The. Cubs. The gun worked sporadically all series but Chris did see a 91 from Taylor Williams, which isn't earth shattering but it's still pretty early in the season and unusually cold. Williams wasn't overpowering but limited the damage for the most part with runners on base, Clint Coulter didn't do him any favors defensively, and many of the hits weren't struck all that well but found holes.

Tyler Alexander made it interesting but managed to close it out.

Omar Garcia (2-4) and David Denson (2-4,HR) had the multi-hit games for the T-Rats. Chris McFarland (1-3,BB,SB) extended his hitting streak to 5 games and swiped his 13th bag. Chris has only been caught stealing 2 times all season.

Huntsville Media Note:

HISTORY TONIGHT: Stars starter Taylor Jungmann will need to pitch just a scoreless 1st inning tonight to set a team record for consecutive scoreless innings from their pitching staff. The current record is held by the 2000 Stars pitching staff that threw 30.2 consecutive scoreless innings. The record goes back to August 29, 2000 in a 2-0 loss at Birmingham. Then they shutout the Barons at Hoover Met 2-0, and 3-0 before Derek Lee, the all-time club leader in wins and innings pitched, blanked Mobile 10-0 in Huntsville, a complete game shutout. That set the record at 30 innings. The next day at the Joe, Al Hawkins got the first two Mobile batters out in the 1st. Then right fielder A.J. Leday homered to end the string. The Stars went on to lose 4-1.

Sounds Commit Six Errors, Blow Late Lead In 9-5 Loss

Sloppy Defensive Play Overshadows Another Strong Start By Jimmy Nelson

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The Nashville Sounds allowed six runs in the bottom of the eighth inning en route to a 9-5 defeat at the hands of the Colorado Springs Sky Sox on Wednesday afternoon at Security Service Field.

Nashville (18-15), which committed a season-high six errors in the game that resulted in seven unearned Sky Sox runs, has dropped three straight games for the first time since early April.

Seven of the nine Colorado Springs runs scored with two outs in an inning, including four of the six in the decision eighth frame against the Sounds' bullpen.

The late Sky Sox rally spoiled another outstanding outing by Nashville right-hander Jimmy Nelson, who tossed his seventh consecutive quality start to open the season (VIDEO: High Heat K, 93 MPH).

The Brewers' top prospect allowed three runs (one earned) on six hits over six innings of action, striking out eight batters while walking two. Nelson, who left in line for his fourth straight winning start but was left with a no-decision, lowered his seasonal ERA to 2.00 with the effort.

The right-hander was backed by a 13-hit offensive attack that was led by 3-for-4 afternoons by Elian Herrera and Hunter Morris. Herrera's effort extended the second baseman's season-best hitting streak to seven games (12-for-30, .400).

Colorado Springs grabbed a first-inning lead with a pair unearned runs against Nelson. Ben Paulsen's two-out single brought in a pair of Sky Sox following throwing errors by Herrera and third baseman Pete Orr earlier in the frame.

Right-hander Leurys Gomez worked three scoreless innings in a start for the Sky Sox.

The Sounds took advantage of his departure in the fourth, plating a run against reliever Manny Corpas. Herrera and Morris opened the frame with consecutive singles and Herrera later stole third before scoring Nashville's first run of the afternoon on a Jeremy Hermida groundout.

The following inning, Nashville rallied to score four two-out runs to take a 5-2 lead.

Pete Orr knotted the contest when he delivered a clutch two-out RBI double to right (audio) off Corpas to bring home Kevin Mattison, who had led off the frame with a two-bagger of his own. Herrera and Hunter Morris (audio) followed Orr with consecutive singles, the second of which plated Orr to propel the visitors in front, before Sean Halton ripped a two-run double to chase Corpas and extend the Sounds' advantage to 5-2 (audio).

Colorado Springs got a run back in the home half of the fifth when a leadoff walk came back to burn Nelson. Tim Wheeler drew the inning-opening free pass and later scored on a two-out Kyle Parker single to reduce the Sounds' lead to 5-3.

In the decisive eighth, the Sky Sox capitalized on three Nashville fielding errors to plate six runs (five of which were unearned) to erase the deficit and claim a 9-5 advantage. The damage was done against Dustin Molleken and Donovan Hand, who suffered the Sounds' first blown save of the year in 12 tries.

Colorado Springs sent 11 men to the plate in the frame and scored the tying run when Hand hit Tim Wheeler with a pitch with the bases loaded. Later in the inning, Ryan Wheeler and Parker delivered back-to-back two-out, two-run knocks against Hand to spot the home team its four-run advantage.

Greg Burke worked around a Hector Gomez single in the top of the ninth to close out the win for Colorado Springs.

The teams play another 12:05 p.m. CT contest on Thursday. Left-hander Brad Mills (2-0, 2.22) will make the start for the Sounds to face Colorado Springs right-hander Christian Bergman (3-1, 4.95).

Nashville Boxscore

It's always nice when the AAA team plays defense like a R team, it usually works out well... or something...

Jimmy Nelson... man did I hate that pick on draft day because his college results were poor, X and I went rounds with Colby on that one, but he's certainly blossomed into something worth being excited about, he now has 44 SOs in 45 IP. I would very much like to put the litany of soft tossers we've had in the rotation for years to bed permanently. Peralta, Thornbug, and Nelson could potentially be a nice start to achieving that end.

Donovan Hand has one of these blow-up innings every so often but I still think he could be a useful addition to the big league pen at some point.

Gotta love Denson starting to get hot. Also great to see he hit an opposite field shot today too. What I don't like is the number of errors he has at 1st already. Did we just draft another DH with no position?

David has been working hard on his defense, unlike what the Brewers did with Fielder they are making it a priority with him. There have been a handful of audio interviews about the work he's been putting in so far.

Final: Jackson 7, @Huntsville 2

Stars Winning Streak Ends

Huntsville, AL - The Jackson Generals ended their five game losing streak Wednesday night with a 7-2 win over the Huntsville Stars at Joe Davis Stadium. The Stars had their four game winning streak snapped.

In the top of the first inning, the Stars made history when Taylor Jungmann struck out Dan Paolini. It completed a stretch of 31 consecutive scoreless innings thrown by the Stars pitching staff which broke a previous record of 30.2 scoreless innings by the 2000 edition of the Stars.

The Stars took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second. Jason Rogers had an RBI double to put the Stars out in front. The next batter Kentrail Davis reached on a fielding error by first baseman Mickey Wiswall scoring Rogers.

The Stars did not score the rest of the night and their lengthy scoreless streak on the mound came to an end in the fifth inning.

With one out, Leon Landry bunted up the third baseline. Rogers barehanded the ball and threw it over first baseman Nick Ramirez's head. That was the first of three errors committed by the Stars defense. Later in the inning with the bases loaded, Jamal Austin singled home Landry, cutting the deficit to 2-1. The scoreless streak for the Stars ended at 34.1 innings. Jungmann also issued a bases loaded walk in the inning to Ketel Marte tying the game at 2-2. The Generals took the lead for good on Paolini's sacrifice fly.

Jungmann, who took the loss feel to 2-4 on the year. He went 4.1 innings allowing five hits on three runs (two earned).

In the eighth, the Generals posted four runs against Stars reliever Kevin Shackelford. Wiswall had an RBI single making it 4-2 in favor of Jackson. John Hicks made it 5-2 on an RBI single. The final two runs were scored when Patrick Brady singled into right field. Mitch Haniger had a throwing error from right field trying to get the lead runner at third base as two runs came in.

Trevor Miller, the Jackson starter came into tonight winless. However, the righty pitched six effective innings limiting the Stars to five hits. Miller improved to 1-4 on the season.

Jackson is now 15-18 and gained a game on the first place Stars who are now 21-12 and lead Tennessee by two games for first place in the Southern League North standings.

The Stars lead Jackson 2-1 in their series as it continues Wednesday night in Huntsville at Joe Davis Stadium. The Stars have LHP Brent Suter (4-1, 1.46) starting. Jackson will turn to LHP Cam Hobson (3-1, 2.52). The game can be heard starting at 6:15 PM CT with Steve Jarnicki on 92.9 FM, 1450 AM, and wtkiradio.com.

Huntsville Box Score

Let's get this out of the way first - catcher Shawn Zarraga doubled, singled, and was HBP to reach three times in four plate appearances, now 29-for-64, .453 (25 singles, four doubles, 11 walks, two HBP, 6 K's).

On a mostly sour note, you could take any two of these batting averages, add them together, and you wouldn't equal Zarraga's -- D'Vontrey Richardson (.219), Kentrail Davis (.217), Josh Prince (.193) and Mitch Haniger (.225), we could list others.

Huntsville Game Log

After four scoreless, Taylor Jungmann's night ends after 80 pitches (50 strikes):
