From the Huntsville Media Notes:

FROM LAST NIGHT: The Stars moved to a season high nine games above .500. It was the second time this year that the Stars had produced back-to-back shutout wins. They also did it April 17th and 18th in Mississippi against the Braves. The Stars lead the Southern League with five shutouts…Entering tonight’s game, the Stars pitching staff has thrown up 21 consecutive scoreless innings. The last time a run was scored against them was three games ago in the 6th inning on Richie Shaffer’s RBI double against Taylor Jungmann….Entering tonight, the 21 consecutive scoreless innings by the Stars matches their season long for consecutive scoreless innings when they held Mississippi off the scoreboard for two straight games and then Mobile in the first three innings of the April 19th game. Huntsville starters enter tonight with 13 straight scoreless frames, while the bullpen has eight consecutive scoreless innings.

With Adam Weisenburger’s two-run double in the 5th, he extended his on base streak to 13 straight games…His on base streak is currently tied for the 3rd longest active streak in the league. During the streak, he is batting .368 with 8 RBI. John Andreoli of Tennessee has reached base safely in 24 straight games…Nick Ramirez failed to reach base last night, ending his on base streak at 15 consecutive games which is tied for the third longest streak of the season.

Dating back to last season, last night’s Stars win was their 4th straight win over Jackson. The Stars ended last season by playing the Generals in Huntsville and won their final three games of the season…In each of their last four home games, the Stars have done all their scoring in one inning. The Stars are just 6-5 at home, and they are actually being outscored by their opponents 47-41…During the Stars three game winning streak they are outscoring their opponents 22-1. The pitching staff is 3-0 with a 0.33 ERA during this span.

MORE WEISENBURGER: Stars C Adam Weisenburger has raised his batting average nearly 100 points over his last 11 games. On April 19th, he was batting just .185. In his last 11 games, he is 11 for his last 31 (.355) Seven of his 11 hits are extra base hits including six doubles.

Final: Clearwater 4, Brevard County 2

Late rally falls short in 4-2 loss to Threshers

By Justin Rocke / Brevard County Manatees

VIERA, Fla. - The Brevard County Manatees brought the winning run to the plate in the bottom of the ninth, but were unable complete the comeback as they fell to the Clearwater Threshers, 4-2 at Space Coast Stadium on Tuesday afternoon.

After Orlando Arcia and Tyrone Taylor were retired to start the frame, Michael Reed drew a walk to start the rally. Victor Roache would single to bring Garrett Cooper, who represented the tying run, to the plate. Cooper lined a single to left to score Reed and pull the Manatees (16-15) within two runs.

With Alfredo Rodriguez coming to the plate, Threshers manager Nelson Prada decided to call upon right-handed reliever Colton Murray, who picked up his first save of the year a night ago. Rodriguez smoked a line drive on the first pitch he saw, but it was right at Brian Pointer who made the play in right field to end the game.

The game was closely contested throughout as the Manatees' Tyler Wagner (3-1, 2.03 ERA) and the Threshers' Colin Kleven were both stellar in their respective starts.

Wagner surrendered just two runs on six hits and one walk, over a season-high seven innings.

Kleven countered Wagner every step of the way to put together his best start of 2014, as he allowed one run on six hits and struck out two without walking a batter.

The Threshers (7-22) grabbed the first lead of the game in the top of the second. Art Charles started the inning with a double to right center and advanced to third on a single by Gabriel Lino.

With one out, Pointer hit a fly ball to left field. Lino was gunned out by Roache trying to tag up to second for the final out of the inning. However, Charles was able to race home from third before the runner was tagged out, giving Clearwater a 1-0 lead.

The Manatees came back to tie it up in the sixth inning. Back-to-back singles by Nathan Orf and Arcia put runners on the corners for Taylor. The center fielder hit a tailor-made, double play ball to short, but was able to beat the relay throw to first. Orf came home to score and tie the game at one.

Clearwater grabbed the lead for good a half inning later. With Lino at third and two outs, Anthony Phillips snuck a ground ball into center field, which scored the runner from third base to make it 2-1.

The Threshers padded their lead in the ninth. After Chad Carman reached on an error, Pointer lined a ball off the bottom of the foul pole in right field and back into play. Home plate umpire Rich Gunton did not hesitate as he raced down the first base line to signal a home run.

Brevard County manager Joe Ayrault came out to dispute the call, seeing as it might have bounced off the top of the wall, but to no avail as the two-run shot extended the Threshers lead to 4-1.

The Manatees will look to get back on track against their I-95 rivals, the Daytona Cubs (10-19), on Wednesday night at Radiology Associates Field at Jackie Robinson Ballpark.

Damien Magnifico (1-2, 3.10) will get the start for Brevard County against Cubs left-hander Rob Zastryzny (1-2, 8.46). First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.

Brevard County Box Score

Michael Reed continues to get on base, going 2-for-3 and drawing a walk. Nathan Orf also had a pair of hits. Orf may be a little old for the Florida State League, but he's done a nice job in the leadoff spot, putting up an on base percentage of .450. Victor Roach went 1-for-4 but hit the ball hard. His double play in the fourth was a line drive rocket and he just missed a home run in the seventh. Garrett Cooper, Tyrone Taylor and Orlando Arcia had the other BC hits. Tyler Wagner pitched well again, giving up only two runs over seven innings.

Brevard County Play-By-Play

The Manatees put the tying run on base in the ninth but couldn't convert.

Brevard County Bottom of the 9th

Orlando Arcia pops out to shortstop Angelo Mora.

Tyrone Taylor flies out to right fielder Brian Pointer.

Michael Reed walks.

Looks like we'll have Wisconsin transactions Wed. or Thurs.

24-year-old RHP Mark Williams (career stats), a 2011 independent league signee who split 2013 between Brevard County and Huntsville, is off to Wisconsin, as per his own tweet.

It's unclear at this time what caused the delay (injury rehab?) in Williams' 2014 debut, or in his low placement now.

Regardless, welcome back, Mark.

Kane County pulls away late to beat Wisconsin

Remillard drives in four for Cougars to beat Rattlers 8-2

By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers

GENEVA, IL - The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers and Kane County Cougars were locked in a low-scoring game Tuesday night at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark. But, Will Remillard drove in the go-ahead run with a sixth inning single and knocked in three more with a seventh inning double to lead Kane County to an 8-2 win over their Western Division rivals.

Wisconsin (13-18) scored in the first inning on a two-out single by Clint Coulter. Chris McFarland singled with one out and stole second. Coulter grounded a single to left and McFarland easily scored for a 1-0 lead. Tuesday was the second time in as many games the Rattlers scored a first inning run.

The Cougars (23-9) tied the game in the bottom of the second inning. A double and a walk put runners on first and second with one out. Jordan Hankins sent a broken bat grounder wide of the bag at first. The throw went to second and it was late. Hankins was credited with an infield single on the play and the bases were loaded. Rattlers starting pitcher Preston Gainey got David Bote to send a slow grounder past the mound. Wisconsin got the force out at second, but the throw to first for the inning ending double play was late. That let the runner from third score to tie the game.

Steve Halcomb singled, Omar Garcia walked, and McFarland reached on a bunt single to start the top of the third inning. Michael Ratterree's flyball to center was deep enough to score Halcomb with the go-ahead run. McFarland tried to go to second as the throw came into the cutoff man at short, but he was out on the play.

The Cougars tied the game in the bottom of the fourth. Remillard doubled to right-center and took third when Hankins hit a grounder to the right side that was booted for an error. Bote knocked in Remillard with a sacrifice fly to center and the score was 2-2.

Yasiel Balaguert started the bottom of the sixth inning with a single. Back-to-back wild pitches by Gainey got Balaguert to third base. Rogers drew a walk to put runners on the corners. It would be a single by Remillard to send in Balaguert to break the tie. An error on a grounder of the bat of Hankins allowed Rogers to score from second base and Kane County was up 4-2.

It was Remillard who put the game out of reach in the bottom of the seventh inning against reliever Rodolfo Fernandez. Kane County loaded the bases with one out on a single and a pair of walks. Remillard doubled to left to drive in all three runners on base. That made the score 8-2 in Kane County's favor.

Remillard was 3-for-3 with two doubles, a walk, a run, and four RBI on Tuesday night. He is 8-for-11 with five doubles and ten RBI in three games he has played against Wisconsin this season.

Kane County tacked on one more run in the bottom of the eighth as a runners scored from second on a dropped flyball to center for what would have been the final out.

Wisconsin is 0-5 against the Cougars this season and has fallen to a season low five games under .500. The Cougars have the best record in the Midwest League and are 16-2 at home this season.

The final game of the series - and Wisconsin's brief three-game road trip - is Wednesday morning. Taylor Williams (1-0, 3.67) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers. Juan Paniagua (0-1, 5.31) is set to start for the Cougars. Game time is 11:00am. Tune in for the broadcast on AM1280, WNAM or IHeartRadio starting with the pregame show at 10:40am.

The Rattlers return to Neuroscience Group Field at Fox Cities Stadium on Thursday evening to take on the Cedar Rapids Kernels. That game starts a six-game, seven-day homestand for the Midwest League affiliate of the Milwaukee Brewers.

WP: Daury Torrez (4-1)

LP: Preston Gainey (1-2)

TIME: 2:36

ATTN: 2,728

WI 16 - 39

Wisconsin Boxscore

Kane Country just owns WI this year winning every game thus far and outscoring the T-Rats 39-16, and what's worse is that they are a Cubs' affiliate. I fell asleep in the 3rd but Chris mentioned Preston Gainey hit 91 in the 2nd. I didn't miss much, Gainey's final line was 5 IP, 5 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 4 BB, 0 SO, and 2 WP. Rodolfo Fernandez wasn't any better giving up 4 runs, 3 earned, in his 3 innings of work. Between the 2 pitchers they walked 7 and managed to strike out just 1 batter. I blame Tyler Wagner for starting today's no strike out trend.

The T-Rats managed just 5 hits so Chris McFarland's (2-3,BB) effort was the only multi-hit game and to make matters worse the Rattlers committed 4 errors as a team. 2 by David Denson, 1 each by McFarland and Johnny Davis.

Wisconsin Recap

Not much to see here but WI did limit their own opportunity with an out on the bases in the 3rd.

Wisconsin Top of the 3rd

  • Steven Halcomb singles on a ground ball to second baseman David Bote.
Omar Garcia hit by pitch. Steven Halcomb to 2nd.
Christopher McFarland singles on a bunt ground ball to catcher Will Remillard. Steven Halcomb to 3rd. Omar Garcia to 2nd.
Michael Ratterree flies into a sacrifice double play, center fielder Jacob Hannemann to shortstop Danny Lockhart to second baseman David Bote. Steven Halcomb scores. Omar Garcia to 3rd. Christopher McFarland out at 2nd on the throw.
Clint Coulter grounds out, third baseman Jordan Hankins to first baseman Jacob Rogers.

Sounds Drop Road Trip Opener To Sky Sox, 4-1

Nashville Sounds

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The Nashville Sounds opened their road trip on the short end of a 4-1 defeat to the Colorado Springs Sky Sox on Tuesday evening in the opener of a four-game series at Security Service Field.

Nashville (18-14) fell into a tie for first place with Round Rock with the defeat. The Sounds are just 3-6 in series openers this season.

Colorado Springs plated all four of its runs in the seventh inning to erase a 1-0 deficit and claim victory.

Left-hander Brent Leach made a spot start for Nashville when scheduled pitcher Alfredo Figaro didn't arrive at the ballpark with enough time to prepare for the start. Leach worked a pair of scoreless frames with one hit allowed and has not allowed a run in his last 7 2/3 innings over five outings.

The Sounds missed an early scoring chance after placing runners on second and third against Sky Sox starter Yohan Flande in the top of the second, courtesy of a Jeremy Hermida single and Lucas May double. However, the Colorado Springs southpaw recovered to strike out Hector Gomez and Kevin Mattison in succession to escape the jam unscathed.

Nashville left fielder Eugenio Velez kept it a scoreless tie in the home half of the second when he threw out Ben Paulsen at the plate as he attempted to score on Rafael Ynoa's two-out single. It marked the fifth runner gunned down at home by Sounds outfielder this season.

The Sounds took a 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth but missed a chance at a much bigger inning after having the bases loaded twice during the frame. After loading the bags with no outs against Flande. May (2-for-3) lifted a sacrifice fly to left to plate Elian Herrera, who extended his season-best hit streak to six games with a 2-for-4 evening. After a Gomez infield single re-loaded the bases, Kevin Mattison hit a grounder that resulted in a forceout at the plate for the second out and Figaro grounded out to shortstop for the final out.

Figaro, who took the hill for Nashville in the third frame, worked four scoreless innings to open his outing before running into trouble in the seventh, when the Sky Sox touched him for four runs to grab a 4-1 lead.

Colorado Springs right fielder Kyle Parker led off the bottom of the seventh with a game-tying solo homer to left, his fifth blast of the year. Paulsen followed with a double to center and later scored the go-ahead run on Ynoa's one-out RBI single. After Ynoa stole second, Dustin Garneau added another RBI single to make it a 3-1 game before Tim Wheeler chased Figaro by driving a two-out single to right to bring in Garneau.

Nashville brought the potential tying run to the plate with two outs in the bottom of the ninth against Brooks Brown after Kevin Mattison tripled and pinch-hitter Hunter Morris drew a walk. The Sky Sox right-hander caught Irving Falu looking at a game-ending strike three, however, to close out the win and nail down his second save of the year.

Figaro (0-1) took the loss for the Sounds after surrendering four runs on eight hits in his 4 2/3 frames of action.

Rob Scahill (1-0) was the beneficiary of the late Sky Sox rally, picking up the win after hurling two hitless innings of relief.

The teams continue the series with a 12:05 p.m. matinee tomorrow afternoon. Brewers top prospect Jimmy Nelson (4-1, 2.08) will man the bump for the Sounds and face right-hander Leuris Gomez (0-0, 21.60).

Final: @Huntsville 5, Jackson 0

Gagnon, Stars hurlers keep posting zeros

Brewers' No. 17 prospect helps extend shutout streak to 30 innings

By Robert Emrich / MiLB.com

Drew Gagnon didn't realize what kind of run his Double-A Huntsville club was on entering Tuesday's game. But he sure does now.

The Brewers' No. 17 prospect gave up four hits over seven innings as the Stars blanked the visiting Jackson Generals, 5-0, on Tuesday.

Gagnon struck out four and walked three for the first-place Stars. The 23-year-old right-hander threw 57 of his 93 pitches for strikes while lowering his ERA to 2.66.

"The big thing was me and [catcher Shawn Zarraga] were working good," Gagnon said. "I shook him off once, so basically we were on the same page all night. All three pitches were working. When you have that in your back pocket, you're good for a start any day. "

Gagnon recorded 10 of his 21 outs via the ground ball, a bit unusual for a pitcher who entered the start with a groundout-to-flyout ratio of 1.03.

"Curveball, I threw that any count, had it going," he said. "The changeup came into play and then the curveball. They were just missing it, getting a ground ball and the defense was taking care of it."

The Stars extended their team shutout streak to 30 innings in the process. They have not allowed a run since May 2, when Montgomery pushed across a run in the sixth inning of Huntsville's 9-1 win. A surprised Gagnon (3-1) was impressed by the streak.

"I didn't know we were on a streak," the California native said. "I figured it out after the game. If we could keep it going, that would be awesome. That's pretty cool to do that."

Gagnon earned his first win since April 15, even though he hasn't allowed more than three runs in a start since that time. The Long Beach State University product was pleased by his outing, both personally and for the club.

"It's always good to have the win on your side," he said. "As long as the team gets the win ... but getting that win, it's always nice."

Tim Dillard followed Gagnon with a perfect inning and Tommy Toledo tossed a hitless ninth to close out the game.

Huntsville's Josh Prince was 2-for-4 with two RBIs and Greg Hopkins reached base three times and scored once.

Jochi Ogando fell to 0-3 after allowing five unearned runs on four hits over 2 2/3 innings for the Generals.

Gagnon's Gem Leads Stars To Another Shut Out Win

Huntsville, AL - Huntsville Stars RHP Drew Gagnon is the latest pitcher to contribute to throwing zeroes up on the scoreboard for the Stars as he threw seven shutout innings Tuesday night leading the Stars past the Jackson Generals 5-0 at Joe Davis Stadium. Gagnon, who improved to 3-1 on the season stuck out four and allowed just four hits.

The Stars latest victory was the team's third straight shutout. The Stars pitching staff has now thrown thirty consecutive innings of scoreless baseball.

The Stars scored all five of their runs in the third inning. With the bases loaded and Mitch Haniger batting, Haniger lifted a line drive heading towards right fielder Kevin Rivers. Rivers dropped the ball on a sliding attempt which allowed Nick Ramirez, Shawn Zarraga and Kentrail Davis to score. The Stars made it 5-0 in the same inning on a two-run double down the left field line by Josh Prince.

Greg Hopkins and Prince each had two hits for the Stars, but the night belonged to the pitching.

Tim Dillard threw a scoreless eighth and Tommy Toledo nailed down a scoreless ninth, to secure the Stars third straight shutout victory.

The Stars are now a season best ten games over the .500 mark with a 21-11 record, which is the best record in the Southern League. They lead the Southern League North by three games.

The Stars lead Jackson 2-0 in their series as it continues Wednesday night in Huntsville at Joe Davis Stadium. The Stars have RHP Taylor Jungmann (2-3, 3.74) starting. Jackson will turn to RHP Trevor Miller (0-4,5.22). The game can be heard starting at 6:15 PM CT with Steve Jarnicki on 92.9 FM, 1450 AM, and wtkiradio.com.

Huntsville Box Score

Bearing down, as Generals' bats were 0-for-8 with RISP.

Sorry to be repetitive, but Shawn Zarraga reached three more times (single, BB, HBP), OBP is now .513. Seriously.

Of course there are two more matinee games today. These schedule-makers don't make it easy on me ;).

Look for Wednesday's Link Report by mid-morning in time for Rattlers and Sounds early action.

Also, all the media (video and audio links) from Tuesday night will be included in that report, thanks.
