Brent Suter

Ok, I wasn't sure if I was supposed to post this in the minor league thread but it didn't look like anyone used that much so sorry if I am in the wrong.

Brent Suter, has anyone seen this kid pitch? Looking through his stats this year and seeing how he's improved pretty much every season has me really intrigued. He's a 6'5, lefty that doesn't seem to walk many and strikes out plenty. Is this 31st round draft pick, who is already 24 coming around into something special?

"This is a very simple game. You throw the ball, you catch the ball, you hit the ball. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, sometimes it rains." Think about that for a while.

Another reason it wouldn't be such a tragedy if they lost Wang. Hobbs Johnson and Anthony Banda are two more lefty starters worth following. Banda is only 20 and handling full season ball so far.

Hobbs is worth following for name only, it helps he's also pitching pretty well for being in pro ball for less than a year if im not mistaken.

Have you even watched Banda pitch? Having seen him pitch on multiple occasions he's nothing special, the only velocity from Mehring was 90 mph during the broadcast of his last game which matches his scouting report:

The 6-foot-3, 185-pounder has yet to fill out, which bodes well for adding velocity to his 87-89 mph fastball. His sharp curveball is his best pitch, and he made strides with his changeup this spring. He has a long, loose arm but needs to do a better job of attacking the strike zone.

Hear is Johnson's scouting report prior to last year's draft:

His fastball ranges from 86-92 mph and he can sit 90-91 at times. He also throws a good changeup, average slider and fringy curveball. He'll need to tighten up his command and had walked 38 in 66 innings this spring.

As to Suter, MH added his audio interviews to a LR late last month.

By Suter's own admission via the audio his FB sits in the mid to upper 80s.

None of those guys have the ceiling of Wang, none. They have may have higher floors but that doesn't make them better prospects nor should their status impact any other left handed pitcher. It's nice for guys who don't have knock out stuff to be successful in the low minors, at least in Suter's and Johnson's case, but the sheer number of those players who have flamed out makes it hard to predict that any pitcher with below average FB velocity is going to be the next guy to buck the odds and make an impact.

Wang may have already accrued more service time than those 3 pitchers combined, however this thread shouldn't even be about Wang except for the fact that you won't let it go for whatever reason.

To answer the original question Suter projects as bullpen arm, he hasn't made the Brewers' top 30 prospects since he's been in the system.

Yesterday's Link Report had 491 views, most of the conversation on the minor league forum takes place in the designated threads and the majority happens in the LR posts for each day. There is plenty of activity on the MiLB forum.

Even if these players are worth following and their ceilings are anywhere near Wang's, since when have we used this type of logic? Anyone who's followed the Brewers farm system has seen how many promising young arms just flame out? This would have been like saying it's alright to lose Wily Peralta because we have Cody Scarpetta, Taylor Jungman and Jed Bradley going into the 2012 season.

It would certainly be nice if both Wang and Suter turned into MLB starting pitchers. That would be a good thing. I applaud the Brewers for sticking with Wang this year and hope he makes it the full season.

As to Suter, I always like to see our prospects put up good numbers, but if he has below-average "stuff," it will be a long, hard climb to the MLB level. I hope he can make it. Heck, if he "only" makes it to the level of "good lefty reliever," I'll take it. There's a lot of value in that.
