Mark Rogers released by Mariners

The Mainer had signed with Seattle as a free agent in January

Mark Rogers of Orrs Island was released by the Seattle Mariners after just two appearances with their Triple-A affiliate in Tacoma, Washington, the Mariners confirmed Monday night.

Rogers was signed as a free agent in January after he spent 10 injury-plagued years in the Milwaukee Brewers’ organization.

He was assigned to minor-league camp early in spring training and didn’t pitch for Tacoma until he made a four-inning relief appearance on April 27, allowing one run on three hits and two walks.

Rogers started Sunday’s game against Las Vegas and walked five in three innings, giving up two hits and two runs.

Rogers, the No. 5 overall pick in the 2004 draft, struggled to stay healthy during his time in Milwaukee’s organization and missed the 2007 and 2008 seasons. He made it to the majors as a September call-up in 2010 and pitched well in four appearances, allowing just two hits and two runs with 11 strikeouts in 10 innings. But he spent much of the 2011 season on the disabled list and pitched a total of just 441/3 innings in the minors.

In 2012, the Brewers called him up in late July and inserted him into the rotation. He was 3-1 with a 3.92 ERA in seven starts before Milwaukee shut him down for the season in September.

Rogers was expected to contend for a spot in the rotation in 2013 but experienced a mysterious drop in velocity during spring training and started the season on the disabled list. After 12 rehab appearances in the minors with a 5.16 ERA in 222/3 innings, he was removed from Milwaukee’s 40-man roster in September.
