So definitely a unique schedule of games on this Wednesday.

You can follow the Stars and Manatees before the Brewers afternoon game in St. Louis.

Then starting in mid-to-late afternoon, it's wall-to-wall twinbill action for the Sounds and Timber Rattlers.

A diehard fan could pull a near 12-hour shift today :).

***

That combo of starters for Wisconsin is subject to change - not quite sure how the staff is going to handle that coming off consecutive postponements.

Some of the Huntsville notes --

TODAY’S GAME: Is game 1 of a 5-game series vs Brady William’s Montgomery Biscuits, the Double-A Affiliate of the Tampa Bay Rays. This is the first of fifteen games between the Stars and Biscuits. The Stars were 5-5 against the Biscuits last year. With the series with Montgomery, 25 out of the first 30 games are against teams from the Southern League South. After playing National League clubs exclusively through the first 25 games, the DH will finally be applied to the Stars lineup against Montgomery. Only two other teams out of the ten in the league are American League teams (Birmingham-White Sox and Jackson-Seattle).

HELLO AGAIN MONTGOMERY: Last season, the Stars and Biscuits played ten games against each other with the Stars going 5-5 against Montgomery. This season, these two teams play three series (two in Montgomery and one in Huntsville). Some of the returning players for the Stars and their performances against Montgomery last year: Kentrail Davis batted .344 with 2 HR and 4 RBI. Brock Kjeldgaard hit .265 2 HR, 6 RBI against Biscuits pitching. Jason Rogers hit .216 3 HR, 9 RBI. Nick Shaw hit .212 with 0 HR, 6 RBI against the Biscuits. Shea Vucinich hit .154 while Shawn Zarraga hit .200 with 3 RBI. The Stars as a team hit .247 with 10 home runs in 10 games against the Biscuits, while Montgomery batted .260 off the Stars.

SUPRISING START: With their 15 wins already in 2014, the Stars are ahead of where they were this time last year. The Stars did not win their 15th game of last season until May 14th. This year they won their 15th on April 26th.

FIRST PLACE: The Stars have been in sole possession of first place in the Southern League North standings since April 6th. There has been only two days all season that the Stars haven’t been in first place. Overall, they have spent 23 days in first place by themselves.

ROAD WARRIORS: Entering today, the Stars have the best road record in the Southern League. At 10-5 away from Huntsville, the Stars offense is hitting .235 on the road compared to just .214 at Joe Davis Stadium. The Stars pitchers have performed much better on the road too. The road team ERA is 1.91 compared to 4.12 at home.

Final: Huntsville 8, @Montgomery 4

RAMIREZ HOMERS AGAIN IN STARS VICTORY

Montgomery, AL - Huntsville Stars 1B Nick Ramirez homered for the fourth time in his last five games leading the Stars to an 8-4 win Wednesday morning over the Montgomery Biscuits at Riverwalk Stadium.

The Stars produced thirteen hits and had a season high seven doubles in their win.

The Stars took a 2-0 lead in the 1st inning against Biscuit starter Victor Mateo(3-3). Nick Shaw led off the game with a double. He later scored on a Shawn Zarraga sacrifice fly. Jason Rogers also doubled home Ramirez for the early Stars lead.

Tyler Cravy improved to 4-1 as the Huntsville starter struck out a season-high seven batters. The only runs he allowed came in the first inning. Taylor Motter scored on a balk issued by Cravy and Richie Shaffer tied it on his RBI triple. Those were the only two runs Cravy allowed in his five innings on the mound.

The Stars broke the 2-2 tie in the third inning. Ramirez and Rogers both produced RBI doubles giving the Stars a 4-2 lead.

Mitch Haniger extended the Stars lead to 5-2 in the fifth inning. Haniger lined an RBI single to left scoring Zarraga.

Ramirez made the score 7-2 in the sixth after he hit a two-run homer to right-centerfield. Ramirez now leads the Southern League with his six home runs.

Montgomery scored their final runs in the bottom of the eighth inning. Motter hit a two-run homer against Stars reliever Kevin Shackelford.

The Stars scored their final run in the ninth on a Kentrail Davis sacrifice fly scoring Zarraga.

The Stars improved to 16-10 and share the best record in the Southern League with Montgomery. The Stars also remain in first place in the Southern League North standings.

Shaw and Ramirez each had three hits for the Stars. Zarraga and Rogers each had two hits apiece for Huntsville.

The Stars continue their five-game series with a doubleheader on Thursday. Both games will be seven inning contests with a thirty minute break in between games. RHP Drew Gagnon (2-1, 3.03) will start Game One for Huntsville. Montgomery will send RHP Dylan Floro (2-1, 6.40) to the mound. The games can be heard starting at 6:00 PM CT with Steve Jarnicki on 92.9 FM, 1450 AM, and wtkiradio.com.

Huntsville Box Score

Fun team to follow thus far. RHP Tyler Cravy's prospect status took a big jump in 2013, and he continues to post solid peripherals, limiting hits and walks, now with 25 K's in 24.1 IP. Small 2014 sample, but if the WHIP remains low and there's a continued uptick in K rate, the 24-year-old (25 this July) 17th round 2009 JUCO pick and 2013 Arizona Fall League participant will climb even further up the front office radar screen.

RHP Tommy Toledo made his AA debut --

Montgomery Bottom of the 9th

Pitching Change: Tommy Toledo replaces Kevin Shackelford.

Jake Hager called out on strikes.

Luke Maile grounds out, second baseman Greg Hopkins to first baseman Nick Ramirez.

Jeff Malm doubles (2) on a sharp fly ball to right fielder Mitch Haniger.

Joey Rickard grounds out, shortstop Nick Shaw to first baseman Nick Ramirez.

In between Cravy and Toledo, slender RHP Casey Medlen tossed two scoreless (and his peripherals this April are also far ahead of his 2013 in this, his repeat AA season), and RHP Kevin Shackelford was scored upon for the first time in four outings (1st HR allowed in 15 innings, four allowed in 61.1 innings in 2013).

But the bats were the real story here. Nick Ramirez must be one strong dude, 19 HR's at Brevard County last year, but a longball drought to end his 2013. Nice to see the early weeks agree with him again from a power standpoint, just need to extend that through the summer.

My goodness, Shawn Zarraga - OBP was .558 coming in to the game, and he managed to lift it by doubling twice and walking. The two doubles were only his 2nd and 3rd extra-base hits among his 22 knocks, so that's great to see today.

Seven doubles among the Stars' 13 hits, three walks, one HBP -- this squad is having some fun.

The only error was Jason Rogers' 3rd of the young season at third base, in the 8th, just prior to the Shackelford-surrendered home run. As noted in Steve's game summary, Rogers had a nice day at the plate as well.

Holy Fiers; he has been on quite a run here.

Imagine the thought process for Fiers when he sees what happened in St. Louis today.

I wish I had a longer track record of success?

AUDIO via Jeff Hem's blog --

Today's interview is with Brewers outfielder and former Sound Logan Schafer, who joins the Sounds today to continue his major league rehab assignment with the Brewers. He’s coming back from a right hamstring strain and discusses the injury, returning to Greer Stadium and the Sounds, how much fun this season has been so far for the first-place Brewers and the challenge he’s faced in going from an everyday player in the minors to a 4th outfielder role in the majors.

Holy Fiers; he has been on quite a run here.

Imagine the thought process for Fiers when he sees what happened in St. Louis today.

I wish I had a longer track record of success?

[sarcasm]You're right, rushing him to the majors less than three years after he was drafted didn't allow him to develop his full repertoire, resulting in an awful career 4.20 ERA, 1.31 WHIP, and 9.0 K/9.[/sarcasm]

Imagine the thought process of the Brewers after seeing what Fiers did today.

I can't see how Fiers hasn't earned the first shot at the rotation when somebody has to miss time. The guy started out great two years ago, then took some lumps, then got hurt. Sounds like how a lot of great pitchers start out. Now he's putting up stupidly designed videogame numbers at AAA. Stuff, schmuff -- he gets results. I want to see if he can get them in Milwaukee.

Final: Brevard County 7, Clearwater 6 (11 Innings)

'Tees complete sweep with 11-inning win

By Andrew Luftglass / Brevard County Manatees

CLEARWATER, Fla. - It took 11 innings, but the Brevard County Manatees defeated the Clearwater Threshers, 7-6 on Wednesday afternoon at Bright House Field and completed a three-game sweep, thanks to a go-ahead single by Brandon Macias.

Macias delivered the big hit with two outs in the top of the 11th. Tyrone Taylor was on second after working a walk and Michael Reed was on first with a single. Macias - who was 0-for-4 coming into his extra-innings at-bat - hit a hard ground ball past the diving glove of third baseman Harold Martinez, to plate Taylor.

Clearwater had to come back to tie the game after trailing by as many as five runs. Brian Pointer got the Threshers started in the sixth inning when he led off with an inside-the-park home run to center field. The ball hit the base of the wall and ricocheted away from Taylor, which allowed Pointer to sprint home and cut the Manatees' lead to four runs.

Later in the sixth, Clearwater added a pair more runs to further cut into the deficit. Brevard (14-12) held its 6-4 lead, however, until the eighth inning. With two outs and a runner on, Martinez hit a towering home run over the left field wall to knot the score at 6-6.

Brevard starting pitcher Tyler Wagner did not factor in the decision as he went five-plus innings and allowed four runs - two earned - on five hits. Wagner also walked one and struck out four.

The Threshers (5-21) had a chance for a walk-off win in the ninth. William Carmona worked a lead-off walk and Anthony Phillips came in to pinch run. Justin Parr bunted him over to second and Phillips advanced to third on a ground out to Mike Garza.

Pointer came up with two outs and Phillips 90 feet away, representing the tying run. In a surprise move, Pointer laid down a bunt toward first. The bunt rolled past reliever Chad Pierce and Garza picked it up, then raced to the bag, dove and tagged first base with his glove before Pointer got there. Garza's effort prevented the winning run from scoring and sent the game to extra innings.

Tanner Poppe closed out the game in the bottom of the 11th, but not without some drama. Poppe allowed a walk and a single with two outs. With the tying run on second and the winning run on first, the right-hander struck out Chad Carman to end the game. Poppe earned his seventh save of the season and Pierce picked up the win.

Five of Brevard's seven runs came in the sixth inning when the Manatees batted around. Victor Roache started the scoring with a two-run triple that plated both Taylor and Reed.

Two batters later, Roache would come home on a Yadiel Rivera single to right. After Parker Berberet popped out, Garza singled to put two on with two out. Nathan Orf would then clear the bases with a double to right.

Reed reached base five times as he went 4-for-5 with two doubles, two runs and a walk. He has reached base 11 times in his last 13 plate appearances.

Rivera recorded three hits and two RBI, while Orf, Berberet and Garza tallied two hits each.

After completing their second series sweep of the season, the Manatees return home on Thursday night to start a six-game homestand. The 'Tees begin with a three-game series against the Tampa Yankees (13-12) at 6:35 p.m. Right-hander Damien Magnifico (1-2, 3.46) is expected to start for the 'Tees against Yankees' lefty Eric Wooten (2-1, 2.30).

Brevard County Box Score

Michael Reed has his average all the way up to .282 and is batting .429 over his last ten games. Reed also stole his 14th base of the year. Yadiel Rivera put together another multi-hit game going 3-for-6. Greg Holle made his 2014 debut and pitched two innings without allowing a run. Tanner Poppe made it a bit interesting, allowing a walk and a hit but picked up his seventh save.

Brevard County Play-By-Play

Rattlers rally to win in ten over the Bees in game one

Brennan's tenth inning single drives in winning run

By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers

GRAND CHUTE, WI - The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers rallied for a 7-6 victory over the Burlington Bees in game one of a doubleheader at Neuroscience Group Field at Fox Cities Stadium on Wednesday night. Taylor Brennan's broken-bat single in the bottom of the tenth drove in the winning run.

Burlington (13-9) grabbed an early lead two batters into the game. Kody Eaves started the game with a double. Mark Shannon followed with an RBI double and the Bees were up 1-0.

The Bees tacked on three more runs in the top of the third. Erick Salcedo and Kody Eaves had back-to-back singles to start the inning and put runners at the corners. Shannon drove in Salcedo with a sacrifice fly. Rattlers starting pitcher Victor Diaz walked the next batter. Anthony Bemboom drove in both runners on base with a double to push Burlington's lead out to 4-0.

Wisconsin (11-12) rallied in the bottom of the third. Brennan started the inning with a triple. Omar Garcia drew a one out walk to give Wisconsin runners on first and third. Johnny Davis singled to drive in Brennan and put the Rattlers on the scoreboard.

Ratterree fell behind Burlington starting pitcher Clint Sharp 0-2 and fouled off a pitch to hang in the at bat. Ratterree launched the next pitch over the wall in left for a three-run home run. His fourth homer of the season tied the game 4-4.

Burlington went back in front in the top of the fifth against Wisconsin reliever Chris Razo. Eaves doubled to start the inning. A deep fly to center off the bat of Shannon moved Eaves to third base. The Rattlers infield was drawn in to get Eaves at the plate, but a high chopper over the mound for groundout by Mike Fish was enough to get the run home and the Bees a 5-4 lead.

Omar Garcia put together a good at bat to start the bottom of the fifth by fouling off four two-strike pitches before he singled to center. Garcia stole second, but Sharp got a strikeout before he left in favor or Trevor Foss.

Foss entered the game and Garcia stole third to be in prime scoring position as the tying run with one out. Foss got Ratterree on a popout to shallow center, walked David Denson, and struck out Clint Coulter to keep the Bees in front.

Burlington added an insurance run in the top of the seventh. Eaves walked with one out and stole second. Fish doubled to left with two out and Eaves scored for a 6-4 lead.

Bees closer Alan Busenitz recorded two quick outs in the bottom of the seventh and had an 0-2 count on Davis. But, Davis reached on an infield single. An error on the play moved him to second base. Ratterree fell behind 1-2 to Busenitz, but worked the count full before coaxing a walk.

The first pitch to Denson was a wild pitch by Eaves and that moved Davis and Ratterree into scoring position. Denson grounded a 1-1 pitch through the right side of the infield to knock in both runners and tie the game 6-6.

Rattlers reliever Trevor Seidenberger came on in the top of the eighth inning and worked three scoreless innings to keep the game tied.

In the bottom of the tenth, Coulter and Jose Pena walked with one out against Burlington reliever Michael Smith. Smith got the second out of the inning. Then, Brennan's blooper to right dropped in off the glove of second baseman Kody Eaves for a hit. Coulter scored easily from second to give the Rattlers the win.

The win allowed the Timber Rattlers to snap a four game losing streak.

The win was also the 215th of Matt Erickson's managerial career with the Timber Rattlers. Erickson has tied Gary Thurman's franchise record for career wins by a manager.

HOME RUN:

Michael Ratterree (4th, 2 on in 3rd inning off Clint Sharp, 1 out)

WP: Trevor Seidenberger (1-0)

LP: Michael Smith (1-1)

TIME: 3:24

Wisconsin Game 1 Boxscore

Final Game 1: Nashville 1, New Orleans 0 (7 Innings)

Fiers Tosses Two-Hit Shutout In Twinbill Opener

Right-hander Lowers Season ERA To 0.80 With Fifth Straight Quality Start

Nashville Sounds

(Mike Strasinger / Nashville Sounds)

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Sounds right-hander Mike Fiers continued his outstanding start to the year, winning his fifth straight outing by tossing a seven-inning, two-hit shutout against New Orleans in Nashville's 1-0 victory in the opener of a doubleheader on Wednesday evening at Greer Stadium.

Nashville (13-12), which pulled into a tie for the division lead with its second shutout win of the year, has been victorious in four of its last five games.

Fiers (5-0), the PCL strikeouts leader, upped his circuit-leading total to 47 with 11 K's on the evening while lowering his ERA to 0.80 on the year (3er/33.2ip). He has hurled quality starts in each of his five victories this season.

Fiers became the first Nashville hurler to post three consecutive double-digit strikeout totals since the club joined the PCL in 1998.

The Sounds scored the contest's only run in the bottom of the fourth inning. Sean Halton doubled with one out against Zephyrs lefty Brian Flynn (2-2) and scored two batters later on catcher Robinzon Diaz's two-out RBI single to center.

A pair of hot Nashville hitters continued to handle smoldering lumber in the opener: Irving Falu and Caleb Gindl each recorded two-hit efforts. Falu has hit safely in 10 of his last 11 contests at a .350 clip (14-for-40), while Gindl -- who is hitting .375 over his last 10 tilts (15-for-40) -- upped his longest hit streak of the year to six games.

Nashville Game 1 Boxscore

I'm running out of adjectives to describe each successive Mike Fiers start so I'm not even going to try, Mike threw 63 of 93 pitches for strikes.

Sounds Hold On For 3-2 Nightcap Win

Nashville's Sweeps Z's in Doubleheader; Moves Into 1st-Place Tie

Nashville Sounds

http://www.milb.com/assets/images/0/0/8/73915008/cuts/_MPS1513_Large_h1gjbwoa_qoathwty.jpg

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The Nashville Sounds fought off a late rally by the New Orleans Zephyrs in game two of Wednesday's doubleheader to win 3-2 and sweep the twinbill

In the game's final inning, the Zephyrs broke Nashville's streak of 17 consecutive scoreless innings pitched, which spanned three games, on Taylor Harbin solo home run to left field. The shot came off reliever Donovan Hand, who later allowed an RBI-double to Brian Bogusevic, cutting the Sounds' lead to one.

Hand held on though, stranding the game-tying runner on third base with a fly-out to earn his 5th save of the season.

The two victories on the day move Nashville (14-12) into a first-place tie with Round Rock in the Pacific Coast League's American Southern Division. The night also marks Nashville's first doubleheader sweep since July 14, 2011 against Albuquerque.

Nashville established its game two lead with singles from Caleb Gindl, Hunter Morris, and Jeremy Hermida in the first inning. Hermida's RBI-single got behind New Orleans right-fielder Jake Marisnick, who was charged with a fielding error that scored Morris on the play, for a 2-0 lead.

The Sounds picked up one additional run in the home half of the fifth inning, which proved to be the difference. Pete Orr tapped a sacrifice bunt, scoring pinch-hitter Eugenio Velez, who doubled to the gap in right-center to reach base.

Spot starter Alfredo Figaro held the Zephyrs to two hits through four scoreless innings with three strikeouts and one walk, before Brent Leach (1-0) entered in the fifth. He picked up the win with a scoreless frame, twirling a strikeout with the bases loaded to end the inning.

Rehabbing Brewers outfielder Logan Schafer went 1-for-3 on the night, batting from the lead-off spot. He picked up his lone hit by legging out an infield single in the fifth.

The Sounds wrap the four-game series with a 7:05 p.m. finale on Thursday evening. Left-hander Brad Mills (2-0, 2.95) will toe the slab for the Sounds to face New Orleans right-hander Bryan Evans (3-1, 5.13). Broadcaster Jeff Hem has the call on 102.5 The Game.

Bees score four late to beat Rattlers 5-1 in game two

Wisconsin and Burlington split doubleheader

By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers

GRAND CHUTE, WI - The Burlington Bees broke open a close game with four runs in the sixth inning to defeat the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers 5-1 in game two of a doubleheader at Neuroscience Group Field at Fox Cities Stadium on Wednesday night. The teams split the doubleheader as Wisconsin won game one 7-6 in ten innings.

Burlington (14-9) jumped to the lead in the first inning. Mark Shannon hit a leadoff double. Three batters later, Ryan Dalton singled to drive in Shannon for the 1-0 lead.

Bees starter Mike Clevinger kept the Rattlers (11-13) in check through four innings. He pitched around a two out single by Francisco Castillo in the second and a leadoff double by Taylor Brennan in the third. He took the 1-0 lead to the bottom of the fifth when Brennan struck again for the Rattlers.

Brennan, who had the game-winning hit in the bottom of the tenth in game on Wednesday, cracked a long drive to centerfield with one out. The ball cleared the 16-foot high wall 400 feet from home plate for a solo homer to tie the game at 1-1. The home run was the fourth of the season for Brennan.

Brennan went 4-for-8 with a single, double, triple, homer, two RBI, and two runs scored in the two games of the twinbill.

The tie did not last long. Mike Fish tripled to center to lead off the top of the sixth inning against Rattlers starting pitcher Anthony Banda. Angel Rosa smacked a 2-0 pitch through the drawn-in infield to drive in Fish and give the Bees a 2-1 lead. The hit also knocked Banda out of the game.

Wisconsin reliever Tyler Spurlin took over and walked the next two batters to load the bases. His third consecutive walk - this one to Ranyelmy Mendoza forced in Rosa to make the score 3-1 in favor of the Bees.

Spurlin struck out the next batter and got Stephen McGee to ground into a force play at second, but the throw to first to complete what would have been an inning ending double play was wild. By the time McGee was tagged out between first and second two more runs scored and the Bees were in control with a 5-1 lead.

Clevinger came back out get the first out of the bottom of the sixth inning before turning the lead over to his bullpen. Clevinger allowed one run on four hits with no walks and six strikeouts over 5-1/3 innings to run his record to 3-0.

A pair of Burlington relievers got the final five outs to close out the game and earn a split in the doubleheader.

Wisconsin Game 2 Boxscore

Well I was hoping for a sweep when I got home but it wasn't meant to be, I have the end of game 1 and most of game 2 on the DVR so if I see anything noteworthy when when I catch up I'll pass it along.

Taylor Brennan (2-3,2B,HR) had the only multi-hit game, though of course this was a shortened contest. Brennan has a 5 game hit streak which has pushed his AVE back up to .246.
