From Huntsville --

Josh Prince last night became the fourth Stars player to steal four bases in one game. Stan Javier did it twice in 1985. Kerwin Moore (8/28, 1998) and Dave Krynzel (5/24,2003). Prince now has 14 steals in the month of April which are the most by any Stars player in franchise history in the month of April. He broke Kevin Ward’s record of 10 stolen bases in 1989.

Nick Ramirez’s home run last night was his second of the season where he hit a homer un late in the game to win it for the Stars. On April 9th, against Pensacola, he broke a 4-4 tie in the 7th with a solo HR which ultimately won the game….The Stars won their first extra-inning game of the season, improving to 1-3 in extra’s…The four hour and four minute game was the second game this season that lasted four plus hours. Just last Saturday the Stars played 4 hours and 52 minutes in a loss to Mobile.

LOVE THE 8TH: The Stars have enjoyed putting together big 8th innings this year. On April 18th in Mississippi, the Stars scored 6 runs in the 8th inning. Friday, the Stars scored a new season high for most runs in an inning with 8 in the 8th inning.

GOOD STARTS: Over the last 4 games, the Stars starters are 3-0 with a 2.00 ERA.

ROAD WARRIORS: Entering today, the Stars have the best road record in the Southern League. At 10-3 away from Huntsville, the Stars have won five straight road games where they are outscoring their opponents 36-5 during the five game winning streak. The Stars offense is hitting .254 on the road compared to just .214 at Joe Davis Stadium. The Stars pitchers have performed much better on the road too. The road team ERA is 1.70 compared to 4.12 at home.

Baseball America Prospect Report (April 27)

PITCHER OF THE DAY: Taylor Williams, rhp — low Class A Wisconsin (Brewers)

We went off the board, if you will, for Saturday’s PoD in Matt Boyd, and Josh Norris has you covered on Mike Montgomery’s no-hitter last night, so in the interest of keeping this to Prospect Handbook entries, the winner Saturday is Williams, Milwaukee’s No. 19 prospect. The 2013 fourth-rounder gave up just one hit in six scoreless innings and retired his final 13 batters. So far this season in the Midwest League, the smallish righty with good fastball life (can hit 94-95) is 1-0, 3.27 with 20 Ks in 22 IP.

AUDIO via Jeff Hem's blog --

"Today’s interview is with left-hander Brad Mills, who discusses his outing and win last night; his start to the season, which has moved him back and forth from the rotation (he’s back in now with the injury to Johnny Hellweg); the background of his go-to pitch, the changeup; and whether or not pitching for several years in hitter-friendly spots like Las Vegas (Blue Jays) and Salt Lake (Angels) changed how he works on the mound."

Not a very exciting day at the plate so far.

Luckily things piked up somewhat later in those games. Coulter is really clicking in Wisconsin as he is starting to close in on 100 PAs. The stat line has everything average, power, discipline.

Rattlers end road trip with 10-2 loss at Kane County

Cougars complete three-game sweep of Rattlers

By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers

GENEVA, IL - The Kane County Cougars collected fourteen hits to defeat the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers 10-2 Sunday afternoon at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark. Jake Hannemann and Will Remillard did most of the damage for the Cougars. Kane County swept the three game series from Wisconsin.

The teams each scored a run in the first inning, but in different ways.

Wisconsin (10-12) loaded the bases as Kane County starting pitcher Jen-Ho Tseng hit leadoff batter Johnny Davis with the first pitch of the game and walked the next two. Clint Coulter grounded into a 6-4-3 double play to get Davis home with a 1-0 lead.

Kane County (17-6) got a leadoff single by Hannemann and he took second on an error. Yasiel Balaguert singled with one out to drive Hannemann in to tie the game.

The Cougars broke the tie in the fourth inning with four runs on five hits off Rattlers starter Barrett Astin. Danny Canela started the inning with an infield single and he went to second on a throwing error. Remillard followed with a single to put runners on the corners. Daniel Lockhart was next and he singled to knock in Remillard for a 2-1 lead. Jordan Hankins made it four straight singles, but his sharp hit to right forced Remillard to stop at third.

Astin looked like he might get out of the inning as he got Shawon Dunston, Jr, to ground into a force play at the plate. But, Hannemann singled with two outs to drive in a pair of runs and the Cougars were up 4-1.

Astin threw a wild pitch on the first pitch to the next batter and Dunston scored from third for a 5-1 advantage.

Tseng recovered from his shaky start and to hold the Rattlers off the scoreboard through the remainder of his start. The Taiwanese righty allowed one hit and struck out seven over his five innings.

Wisconsin tried to rallied against Kane County reliever Tyler Bremer in the top of the sixth inning. Clint Coulter and David Denson singled to start the inning. Taylor Brennan singled with one out to load the bases. Bremer got out of the inning with a strikeout and a grounder to third.

Kane County added onto their lead in the bottom of the sixth. Remillard homered, his first as a professional, to start the inning. Lockhart and Hankins followed with singles and Dunston grounded into a force play at second base. Dunston would steal second base to get into scoring position and Hannemann drove in both Lockhart and Dunston to make the score 8-1. Hannemann finished the day with three hits and four RBI.

The hit by Hannemann drove Astin out of the game. The Rattlers starter gave up eight runs on twelve hits over 5-1/3 innings. Tyler Linehan got the final two outs of the sixth.

Wisconsin got back on the board in the top of the seventh. Johnny Davis reached on an error to start the inning. He was still at second base with two out. Coulter lined a double to center to drive in Davis and the Rattlers were down 8-2.

Coulter extended his current hitting streak to seven games with a 2-for-4 day on Sunday. Coulter is 12-for-27 during the hitting streak.

Kane County tacked on two more runs against Linehan in the seventh. A walk and a double brought Remillard back to the plate with two runners in scoring position and no outs. Remillard doubled to knock in both runners and give Kane County their ninth and tenth runs of the game. Remillard also had three hits while driving in three runs for the Cougars on Sunday.

Wisconsin ended their seven game road trip with a 1-6 record. They have fallen two games under the .500 mark for the first time this season.

Kane County won their fifth straight game thanks to Sunday's victory. They have the best record in the Midwest League at 17-6.

The Timber Rattlers return home to start a seven-game homestand. Wisconsin will face the Burlington Bees in the opening game of the homestand on Monday night. The Timber Rattlers have Victor Diaz (0-1, 3.46) as their scheduled starting pitcher. Burlington plans to send Clint Sharp (0-2, 3.93) to the mound. Game time is 6:35pm.

Monday is a Qdoba QMonday at Neuroscience Group Field at Fox Cities Stadium. Purchase a lunch entrée at either Qdoba location in Appleton (3813 E. Calumet Street or 4343 W. Wisconsin Avenue) on Monday and receive a ticket to any Monday home game during the 2014 season.

If you can't make it out to the ballpark, there are several ways to catch the action. MyNEW 32's Sports Showdown will televise the game starting with their pregame show at 6:00pm. Nelson Strong Again, Offense Lights Up RedHawks In 8-5 Series Finale Win

Nashville Completes First Winning Road Trip Since 2011

Nashville Sounds

(Mike Strasinger / Nashville Sounds)

OKLAHOMA CITY - Jimmy Nelson worked his fifth straight quality start and Nashville batters slugged three homers for the second straight game to propel the Sounds to an 8-5 victory over the Oklahoma City RedHawks in the finale of a four-game series on Sunday afternoon at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark.

With the victory, the Sounds wrapped up their first winning multiple-series road trip since August 2011, closing the swing with a 5-3 mark. Nashville (12-11) now possesses a winning record for the first time since the third day of the season.

Nelson (3-1) worked his fifth consecutive quality start to open the year and picked up his third victory by holding the RedHawks to two runs on six hits while striking out six batters (video - 6th strikeout, full at-bat) in his seven innings of action. His ERA stands at 1.97 through his five starts.

The Sounds scored a season-best eight runs by cranking out a season-high 14 hits on the afternoon, including a 4-for-4 effort by third baseman Taylor Green. Every member of the Nashville lineup either rapped a knock or drove in a run in the contest.

Oklahoma City opened the contest by taking a 1-0 first-inning lead against Nelson as Robbie Grossman led off with a single and later scored on a groundout.

Jeremy Hermida (3-for-4) powered the Sounds into the lead in the fourth when he slugged a two-out, two-run homer to left off RedHawks starter Bobby Doran, the outfielder's second big fly of the year (audio). Robinzon Diaz followed with a double and scored the third run of the frame for Nashville on a single by Green to make it a 3-1 contest. All three runs in the inning were unearned following a two-out throwing error by shortstop Ronald Torreyes.

The Sounds plated more two-out runs in the fifth when Caleb Gindl and Hunter Morris put together Nashville's first pair of back-to-back homers this season, both off Doran. The roundtrippers were Gindl's second (audio) and Morris' fourth (audio) of the year.

After Oklahoma City got a run back in the sixth when Gregorio Petit doubled and scored on a Domingo Santana single, Nashville extended its lead to 7-2 in the top of the seventh with a pair of runs off David Martinez.

With the bases loaded, Sean Halton lifted a sacrifice fly to right to bring home Irving Falu, who extended the Sounds' longest hit streak of the year to nine games with a single earlier in the frame. Gindl, who had doubled, scored a second run on the play as the result of a throwing error by first baseman Jon Singleton.

After Nashville added its season-high 8th run in on a Falu sacrifice fly, Oklahoma City took immediate advantage of Nelson's departure in the bottom of the eighth by touching Kyle Heckathorn for three runs to pull within striking distance at 8-5. Torreyes led off with his first homer of the year, a solo shot to left, before the 'Hawks later added two more runs on back-to-back two-out RBI doubles off the bats of Max Stassi and Enrique Hernandez.

Donovan Hand retired the RedHawks in order in the ninth to close out the victory and picked up his fourth save of the year, matching Rob Wooten for the team lead.

The Sounds return to Music City tomorrow to begin an eight-game homestand with a 7:05 p.m. opener of a four-game series against New Orleans (AAA-Marlins). Right-hander Hiram Burgos (1-3, 6.50) will make the start for the Sounds to face Zephyrs right-hander Jay Rogers (0-1, 5.51).

Nashville Boxscore

Jimmy Nelson wasn't as dominating as he was in his previous 2 appearances, but I'll take it. Kyle Heckathorn is having a season to forget so far, Kentrail Davis may well be the last man standing from the top of that once promising 2009 draft.

Caleb Gindl (2-5,2B,HR) has pushed his AVE back up to .250 and Taylor Green's (4-4) day pushed his AVE up to .283.

Outside of his 4 run outburst on April 16th Donovan Hand has pitched very well.

Houston's once #1 prospect Jon Singleton (he's slid down to 7) went 2-12 for in the series.

any chance Bradley gets a move up ?

There's no room for him in AA right now:

Jungmann

Gagnon

Hall

Suter

Cravy

They could bump Cravy back to relief to make room but he's pitching very well, I don't remember who the original 5th starter was.

Final: @Tennessee 2, Huntsville 1

Stars Four Game Winning Streak Ends

Kodak, TN - Tennessee Smokies 1B Dustin Geiger hit a solo home run in the bottom of the seventh inning breaking a 1-1 tie and giving the Smokies a 2-1 victory Sunday afternoon over the Huntsville Stars at Smokies Park.

The Stars were held to just one hit all afternoon. Shawn Zarraga recorded the hit in the third inning.

The Stars couldn't take advantage of Smokies starter Pierce Johnson's inability to consistently throw strikes. Johnson walked three in the first inning. The Stars were only able to score once when Mitch Haniger produced a sacrifice fly scoring Josh Prince.

Tennessee tied the game in the second when Rafael Lopez scored on a wild pitch by Stars starter Taylor Jungmann (1-3).

Johnson walked the bases loaded in the fourth inning, but Nick Ramirez struck out to end the threat. Johnson walked eight hitters in four innings on the mound. The Stars left eight men on base through the front four innings and would not get another baserunner the rest of the game.

Hunter Cervenka(2-0) threw three perfect innings followed by Armando Rivero's perfect eighth and ninth innings. Rivero recorded his fourth save of the season.

Jungmann was the tough luck loser today for the Stars. The righty worked 6.2 innings giving up four hits on two earned runs. He walked four and struck out six.

The Stars four game winning streak was snapped as they are now 15-9 and remain in first place. Tennessee improved to 11-13 and ended their three game losing streak.

The Stars lead the series with the Smokies 3-1 as game five will take place Monday night at Smokies Park. LHP Brent Suter (3-0, 1.05) will start for the Stars while Tennessee will go with RHP Corey Black (0-1, 4.09). The game can be heard starting at 6:00 PM CT with Steve Jarnicki on 92.9 FM, 1450 AM, and wtkiradio.com.

Huntsville Box Score

Shawn Zarraga walked in addition to the lone Stars base hit. He's only struck out three times in 42 AB's, and his line remains gaudy at .476/.558/.500.

Taylor Jungmann (stat lines) only has the one bad outing, his other four starts can be described as solid, although four walks tonight not ideal.

Huntsville Game Log

Early inning frustrations await you at the link, but there were no Stars at-bats with a man on 3rd and less than two out, so there isn't that real glaring fail to identify.

Brad will fill us in on the Manatees 2-1 walkoff loss a bit later.

The Brewers don't want to return to the California League days of High Desert, but you have a youngish High-A squad that is not offensively strong to begin with, and those guys must be extremely deflated with a .213 team average after 23 games (.602 OPS).

But you can't blame everything on Space Coast Stadium or the Florida State League in general, as these league team batting numbers show.

Fourteen runs in their last ten games, just painful...

Final: Brevard County 1, Daytona 2

Manatees fall 2-1 to Daytona on walk-off single

Brevard drops fifth straight game, leave 38 on base in four-game set

By Justin Rocke / Brevard County Manatees

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - After a tightly contested battle with their I-95 rivals, Willson Contreras delivered the big base-hit as Brevard County Manatees fell victim to a 2-1, walk-off victory by the Daytona Cubs on Sunday evening at Jackie Robinson Ballpark and were subsequently swept in the four-game set.

After the first two batters of the ninth inning were retired, Jeimer Candelario snuck a ground ball past the glove of first baseman Michael Garza and down the right field line for a double. Manatees' reliever Tommy Toledo proceeded to intentionally walk Rock Shoulders to bring Contreras to the dish.

The catcher had struggled mightily to that point. Contreras committed an error and a passed ball defensively, as well as striking out twice and grounding into a big double play at the plate.

On the cusp of his third strike out, Contreras smacked a 0-2 pitch from Toledo into center field. Tyrone Taylor made an accurate throw to the plate, but Cameron Garfield's tag was just a hair late as Candelario scored the winning run.

The walk-off loss over shadowed a strong pitching performance by both clubs, most notably starters Tayler Scott (2-2, 3.46) of Daytona and Jed Bradley (3-1, 3.42) of Brevard County.

Bradley was spot on for his fourth consecutive outing, but did not factor into the decision. The lefty struck out a career-high nine batters over five innings of work, while allowing one run on three hits and three walks.

Scott, who carried a no-hitter into the seventh inning in his prior start against Brevard (11-12), was impressive again, but did not get a decision as well. The Cubs' right-hander also allowed one run on four hits, walked three and struck out four in six innings.

Daytona (9-14) picked up the first run of the ball game off Bradley in the bottom of the fourth. Dan Vogelbach led off the frame with a walk and then stole his first base of the year to get into scoring position. With one out, Candelario singled back up the middle to score Vogelbach and put the Cubs up 1-0.

Brevard would rally right back, however, to tie the game in the next half-inning. Alfredo Rodriguez led off with an infield single to short and then advanced to third on a one-out double to left by Brandon Macias. Nathan Orf brought home Rodriguez with a sacrifice fly to deep center to knot the game up at one.

The 'Tees had their fair share of opportunities to grab the lead, but failed to do so as they stranded ten runners on base. Their best shot came in the seventh, when Garza reached on an error and Macias singled to start the inning. Orf would sacrifice the runners to second and third, but they would not advance any further.

Cubs' reliever Michael Jensen - who would go on to pick up the win - struck out Orlando Arcia and forced Taylor to ground out to end the frame. Jensen was stellar in relief of Scott, as he threw three shutout innings and allowed just two hits while striking out four without walking a hitter.

Austin Ross was equally impressive out of the bullpen for the Manatees. The former LSU Tiger turned in his best outing of the season, by also throwing three scoreless innings. He surrendered just two hits and one walk while striking out three.

Brevard County will look to end their five-game skid as they head to Clearwater on Monday, to start a three-game series with the Threshers (5-18) at Bright House Field. The 'Tees will send Jorge Lopez (1-2, 4.41) to the hill for his fifth start of the season. The Threshers will counter with right-hander Jeb Stefan (1-1, 6.75). First pitch is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.

Brevard County Box Score

Jed Bradley threw a lot of pitches and was only able to get through five, but he made those five innings count, striking out nine batters and allowing just one run. Austin Ross was good in relief, going three scoreless. As for the offense, it might be time to think about sacrificing a chicken or something. 25-year-old Brandon Macias had the only multi-hit game, going 2-for-4 with a double. Mike Garza's triple was the only other extra-base hit. After a good start to the season, Tyrone Taylor saw his season average dip below the Mendoza Line with an 0-for-4 day.

Brevard County Play-By-Play

Garza's triple came to lead off the third inning, but more bad baserunning kept the Manatees from scoring.

Brevard County Top of the 3rd

Mike Garza triples (2) on a fly ball to left fielder Rock Shoulders.

Brandon Macias called out on strikes.

Nathan Orf reaches on a fielder's choice out, third baseman Jeimer Candelario to catcher Willson Contreras to third baseman Jeimer Candelario. Mike Garza out at home. Nathan Orf to 2nd on the throw.

Orlando Arcia walks.

Tyrone Taylor flies out to center fielder Albert Almora.

Another missed opportunity came in the seventh

Brevard County Top of the 7th

Pitching Change: Michael Jensen replaces Tayler Scott.

Mike Garza reaches on a throwing error by second baseman Gioskar Amaya.

Brandon Macias singles on a ground ball to left fielder Rock Shoulders. Mike Garza to 2nd.

Nathan Orf out on a sacrifice bunt, third baseman Jeimer Candelario to second baseman Gioskar Amaya. Mike Garza to 3rd. Brandon Macias to 2nd.

Orlando Arcia strikes out swinging.

Tyrone Taylor grounds out, shortstop Marco Hernandez to first baseman Dan Vogelbach.
