Baseball America's...

PITCHER OF THE DAY: Jimmy Nelson, rhp — Triple-A Nashville (Brewers)

Nelson struck out nine against just one walk on Monday in seven shutout innings against Omaha. The massive righthander has 25 punchouts in as many frames this season, making him one of the bright spots on an otherwise bereft Brewers farm.

From Nashville's game notes:

VELEZ PICKS UP WHERE HE LEFT OFF: Utilityman Eugenio Velez ranks 2nd in the Pacific Coast League with his .420 batting average. The 31-year-old has hit safely in 12 of his 13 starts with his lone miss occurring Sunday. He has seven multi-hit games this season, ranks 6th in the PCL with a .491 on-base percentage and is 14th with a .620 slugging mark. Velez is tied for 3rd in the league with six stolen bases. The veteran closed out the 2013 campaign by reaching base safely via hit or walk in his final 36 games, including a season-ending 22-game hit streak.

***

Now it's just ridiculous. Velez has three singles and an RBI in his first three plate appearances today and is now hitting .453 (24-for-53).

Since signing with Milwaukee last July 26th, Velez is 81-for-204 in a substantial sample (that's .397).

The Huntsville Media Notes aren't available online yet, but we'll pass along some of the various tidbits from them when we can --

GOOD DEFENSE: The Stars defense leads the Southern League in most double plays turned with 21, and has committed the fewest errors in the league with 10. Entering tonight’s game, the Stars have turned at least one double play in six straight games.

CLOSE CALLS: 14 out of the first 18 games that the Stars have played have been decided by 3 runs or less and three have gone into extra innings. The Stars are 7-7 in these contests and 0-3 in extra innings.

SCORING EARLY: The Stars have enjoyed scoring runs in the 1st innings of games this season. In 8 games or in 44% of games played thus far, the Stars have scored at least 1 run in the 1st inning. When the Stars score a 1st inning run they are 5-3.

ALL ABOUT PITCHING: Through 18 games, the Stars pitching staff has the lowest team ERA in the Southern League. After having the second worst team ERA in 2013, third year pitching coach Chris Hook’s pitching staff is sporting a 2.77 ERA The 44 walks issued by the staff are the 2nd fewest and the 8 saves are tops in the Southern League. The Stars pitchers have allowed the most homeruns in the league (16). 10 of those 13 came in one series in Huntsville against Pensacola. 13 of the 16 homeruns allowed have been in Huntsville.

STEALING BAGS: Stars OF/INF Josh Prince enters today with 10 stolen bases tied with Montgomery’s Willie Argo for the most in the league. In 2012, Prince finished 2nd in the Southern League in stolen bases only behind Pensacola’s Billy Hamilton who set the minor league record for steals in a season that year. In his 6 year pro career, Prince has 182 steals. He is 182-232 in stolen bases(78%) during his career. During Prince’s junior season at Tulane, he stole 48 bases which was tied for the most stolen bases in the nation.

WALK THIS WAY: Stars hitters have shown the ability to grind out at-bats and take walks in the early stages of the season. Greg Hopkins, Nick Shaw and Prince all have walked 10 times this season. The trio is tied for 8th in the Southern League in walks.

RUN PRODUCERS: Stars 1B Nick Ramirez enters today with 11 RBI which is the 3rd most in the Southern League. Last season, he drove in 81 runs for Brevard County(High-A) which was a career high. He is on pace for 86 RBI in his first season at Double-A. He has 5 RBI in his last 4 games. Ramirez also struck out a career high 171 times last season. With his 19 strikeouts this season, he’s on pace to strikeout 148 times. Mitch Haniger enters tonight’s game with 10 RBI which is 4th most in the Southern League. He had 58 RBI combined last year with Wisconsin(Low-A) and Brevard County(High-A). This season he is on pace for 82 RBI.

NOT AS UNUSAL AS YOU MAY THINK: With Mobile’s Jake Lambs’ inside-the-park-grand slam Saturday, one would assume an inside-the-park-grand slam is a rare occurrence in baseball. However, just seven days ago on April 13th, Pittsburgh Pirate prospect Erich Weiss hit an inside-the-park grand slam for the Class A West Virginia Power. It was also his first ever professional homerun and his first with a wooden bat. In major league baseball, there have been 224 inside-the-park grand slams in Major League Baseball history, 26 in the past 50 years, and only eight since 1990 (as of August 1, 2011). Honus Wagner has the most in MLB history with five.

THE HIT KING: Stars pitching coach Chris Hook has made mention that Stars catcher Shawn Zarraga’s batting stance reminds him of the all-time hit king Pete Rose. Zarraga, has been a tough out this year. Saturday, he recorded his 2nd 3-hit performance of the season in just 13 games played. He has recorded at least one hit in every game that he’s started this season. On the year, Zarraga is batting .464 with 6 RBI.

Sounds Drop Series Finale At Omaha, 5-1

Velez Goes 3-for-4, Drive In Lone Nashville Run

Nashville Sounds

PAPILLION, Neb. - Omaha hurler Sugar Ray Marimon tossed a quality start to lead the host Omaha Storm Chasers to a 5-1 victory over the Nashville Sounds on Tuesday afternoon in the series finale at Werner Park, resulting in a split of the four games.

Marimon (2-0) defeated the Sounds for the second time in a week, holding Nashville (9-10) to one run on six hits while fanning seven in his 6 1/3 innings of work.

Omaha got out to an early lead as a second-inning walk came back to haunt Sounds starter Hiram Burgos. Melky Mesa drew the free pass with one out and later scored on a Pedro Ciriaco sacrifice fly.

The Storm Chasers doubled their lead to 2-0 in the third on Carlos Peguero's two-out solo homer to right.

Nashville got onto the board in the top of the third when Pete Orr (2-for-4) led off with a double to up his season-best hitting streak to five games (10-for-20, .500) and scored on Eugenio Velez's ensuing RBI single to left off Marimon. Velez went 3-for-4 on the afternoon to increase his team-leading average to .444 on the year.

Omaha responded quickly, upping its advantage to 5-1 with a three-run third against Burgos. Matt Fields and Mesa opened the frame with a triple and double, respectively, before Mesa scored on a wild pitch. Ciriaco later scored the frame's third run after walking, stealing second, and coming plateward on Jason Donald's two-out RBI knock to center.

Burgos (1-3) suffered his third loss in his initial four starts after surrendering five runs on five hits while walking four batters and striking out four in his four frames of action.

The Nashville bullpen was spotless behind Burgos, as Dustin Molleken, Michael Blazek, and Donovan Hand combined for four scoreless innings.

After scoring in the fourth, the Sounds put a runner into scoring position only once in the final five frames. Omaha hurlers retired the final eight Nashville batters in succession to complete the game.

After joining the entire Pacific Coast League for an off day tomorrow, the Sounds resume their road trip on Thursday in Oklahoma City, where they will take on the RedHawks (AAA-Astros) in the 7:05 p.m. opener of a four-game set. Right-hander Ariel Pena (0-0, 2.00) will make the start for Nashville after missing his last turn in the rotation due to a forearm injury. Oklahoma City will counter with right-hander Mike Foltynewicz (1-1, 7.20).

Nashville Boxscore

Hiram Burgos has had a rough start to the season, today he also had a WP and a throwing error on a pick off attempt tacked onto his line. Hiram threw 83 pitches in just 4 innings, 50 for strikes. His ratios weren't all that far off his career norms coming into today's game, but his WHIP sure has spiked so far.

Hunter Morris (1-3) was the only prospect to record a hit today. The team batting average is only .244 even with Peter Orr (.380) and Eugenio Velez (,444) raking in the early going, that is the 3rd worst team AVE in the PCL. There are only 3 other players hitting .250 or better; Morris (.277), Jeremy Hermida (.270), and Elian Herrera (.250).

Bees beat Rattlers 2-1

Pitchers' Duel goes to Burlington

By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers

BURLINGTON, IA - Ryan Etsell barely outdueled Barrett Astin on Tuesday night at Community Field. Etsell allowed one run on six hits over six innings. Astin allowed two runs - one earned - on six hits over seven innings. The unearned run was the difference as Etsell's Burlingon Bees defeated Astin's Wisconsin Timber Rattlers 2-1.

Burlington (11-6) loaded the bases with three straight singles in the bottom of the fourth inning. Rattlers starting pitcher Barrett Astin got a foul pop out for the first out. Mark Shannon was next and he sent a slow grounder to second. Wisconsin got the runner at second, but Shannon barely beat the throw to first to deny the Rattlers an inning-ending double play and let the runner from third score for a 1-0 lead.

Eric Aguilera singled to start the bottom of the fourth inning. He didn't try to go to second, but the throw in from left field sailed on Jose Pena and wound up near the tarp behind first base. This error allowed Aguilera to take third base. Anthony Bemboom followed with a single and the Bees were up 2-0.

Wisconsin (9-8) got on the scoreboard in the top of the sixth, but was left wondering what could have been.

Angel Ortega started the inning with a single. A balk by Etsell sent him to second. An infield single by Johnny Davis got Ortega to third base. Davis was running on a pitch to Francisco Castillo and the ball bounced a short distance behind Burlington catcher Stephen McGee. Ortega took off for home and scored without a play.

Castillo sent a flyball to shallow right for the first out and the speedy Davis challenged the arm of Ranyelmy Mendoza. Davis won the race to third, but overslid the base. He got up and - instead of trying to get back to third - lit out for the plate. He was caught in a rundown before eventually being tagged out.

Chris McFarland extended the inning with a single and stole second base with Clint Coulter at the plate. Coulter sent a grounder to the hole between short and third with McFarland racing for third. Burlington shortstop Erick Salcedo made the stop on the ball and - instead of throwing to first to try to get Coulter - ran at McFarland, who had rounded third too far. McFarland got caught in another rundown between third and home and was tagged out for the final out of the inning.

The Rattlers had an opportunity in the top of the eighth inning as Steve Halcomb walked to start the inning against Bees reliever Trevor Foss. Ortega sacrificed Halcomb to second base. Foss got the second out on a flyball to center. That brought Castillo to the plate. The Rattlers right fielder lined a 3-2 pitch from Foss to deep to right, but Mendoza raced back to make a leaping grab just shy of the warning track.

Bees closer Alan Busenitz worked around a two-out single by David Denson in the top of the ninth inning and struck out the side to record his fourth save of the season.

Clint Coulter led the Rattlers offense with two hits.

Astin pitched well, but took the loss. His seven innings set a single game high as a professional. He also struck out three without walking a batter. Astin has struck out thirteen and walked none in 22 innings pitched over four games for the Rattlers this season. But, he took the loss on Tuesday in Burlington and his record fell to 3-1.

The Bees have won the first two games of the four-game series. Dating back to the 2013 season Burlington has also won the last six meetings between these teams.

Game three of this series is scheduled for Wednesday night. Anthony Banda (0-2, 3.46) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Rattlers. Clint Sharp (0-1, 3.95) takes the mound for the Bees. Game time is 6:30pm. Tune in for the pregame show at 6:10 on AM1280, WNAM or IHeartRadio.

WP: Ryan Etsell (2-0)

LP: Barrett Astin (3-1)

SAVE: Alan Busenitz (4)

TIME: 2:05

ATTN: 478

Wisconsin Boxscore

An error and unnecessary outs on the bases... close games usually come down to who makes the least amount of mistakes, tonight was no different. Regardless Barrett Astin continues to pitch well even though his draft day profile still rings true. Trevor Seidenberger had a heck of an 8th inning striking out the side.

Final: Brevard County 2, Tampa 1

Bradley sparkles again in Manatees win

'Tees win fifth one-run game of 2014 with 2-1 victory over Tampa

By Justin Rocke / Brevard County Manatees

Brevard County starting pitcher Jed Bradley, seen here in a start from earlier this season, earned his third straight win on Wednesday night as the Manatees defeated the Tampa Yankees, 2-1 at George M. Steinbrenner Field. The southpaw went six innings and allowed just one run on five hits, while striking out five and did not issue a walk. (Dennis Greenblatt/Hawk-Eye Sports Photography)

TAMPA, Fla. - Led by another stellar performance by former first-round pick Jed Bradley (3-1, 3.80), the Brevard County Manatees were able to squeak out a 2-1 victory over the Tampa Yankees at George M. Steinbrenner Field on Tuesday night.

The former Georgia Tech Yellow Jacket and reigning FSL Pitcher of the Week surrendered just one run on five hits over six innings, struck out five and did not walk a batter.

Reliever Tommy Toledo shut the door on Tampa, as he picked up his fourth save of the season. After a lead-off triple by Jake Cave in the bottom of the ninth and an infield single by shortstop Cito Culver, the Yankees had the tying and winning runs on base with no one out.

The Manatees' leader in saves from 2013 proceeded to retire the heart of the Yankees lineup in order, as he struck out Eric Jagielo, Dante Bichette, Jr. and Peter O'Brien to close out the victory.

After trailing throughout the series, Brevard County (11-7) rallied to take the lead in the top of the seventh to give Bradley his third consecutive victory.

Second baseman Yadiel Rivera led off the inning with a bunt single to third - one of his three hits of the night - and then advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by first baseman Michael Garza.

On a 1-0 pitch, third baseman Brandon Macias came through with the go-ahead base knock against reliever Dietrich Enns. The former Kansas Jayhawk singled to right field to score Rivera and put the Manatees in front 2-1.

The Yankees (10-8) took the initial lead in the bottom of the fourth inning. Culver started the rally with a one-out single to right and Jagielo pushed him to third with a single of his own.

Bichette, Jr. then hit a soft grounder to short and Orlando Arcia's only play was to get the force out at second base as Culver came across to give Tampa the one-run advantage.

Brevard County struck back immediately by tying the game in the top of the fifth.

Rivera led off with a single to left and on the very next pitch, Garza was drilled with a fastball from Yankees starter Rafael De Paula (1-1, 2.33) to put two runners on.

After a Macias ground out, designated hitter Nathan Orf walked to load the bases. A wild pitch from De Paula allowed Rivera to scamper home from third and tie the game at one.

That was the only blip for the Yankees prospect. The right-hander allowed just that one run on two base-hits, both singles, over five innings. De Paula also struck out six and walked two in his second straight no-decision.

The Manatees and Yankees will battle again in the rubber game of the series on Wednesday night at 7:00 p.m. Brevard County will send right-hander Jorge Lopez (1-1, 4.50) to the mound against Tampa's left-hander Dan Camarena (0-2, 4.50).

Brevard County Box Score

It was all about the pitching once again. Another solid outing from Jed Bradley. Six innings, one run, five strikeouts. Mike Strong and Tommy Toledo picked up another three scoreless innings out of the Manatees bullpen. Nice night from Yadiel Rivera as well, going 3-for-4 and scoring both runs for Brevard. Other than that, not a whole lot to talk about offensively. Nathan Orf moved up to the leadoff spot and reached base three times with a single and a pair of walks. Amazingly, Orf was not hit by a pitch. Cameron Garfield and Tyrone Taylor each had a stolen base. Garfield threw out two runners attempting to steal and picked another off second base.

Brevard County Play-By-Play

The Manatees did a nice job of manufacturing the winning run following a leadoff single by Rivera to start the 7th.

Brevard County Top of the 7th

Pitching Change: Dietrich Enns replaces Evan Rutckyj.

Yadiel Rivera singles on a bunt ground ball to third baseman Eric Jagielo.

Nathan Orf reaches on a fielder's choice out, shortstop Cito Culver to third baseman Eric Jagielo. Brandon Macias out at 3rd.

Orlando Arcia grounds out, pitcher Dietrich Enns to first baseman Reymond Nunez.

Final: Mobile 13, @Huntsville 2

Errors Plague Stars in Loss to Mobile

Huntsville, AL - The Mobile BayBears pounded out seventeen hits on their way to scoring a season high thirteen runs as they dominated the Huntsville Stars from start to finish in a 13-2 victory. With the win, the BayBears improved to 11-8 and have guaranteed themselves a series victory over the Stars in their five-game series. The Stars fall to 11-8 after the loss.

Mobile's Justin Greene was a perfect 5-5 at the plate with 3 RBI and David Peralta was 4-4 with 7 RBI. Peralta homered twice, one of which was a grand slam.

Already leading 1-0, the BayBears took advantage of a key two-out error by the Stars in the second inning. Stars starter Taylor Jungmann (1-2) was facing Mike Lee, the Mobile pitcher. Lee grounded a slow grounder to third baseman Jason Rogers. Rogers fielded the ball, but never could get the ball out of his glove which allowed Lee to reach. Michael Freeman followed with a single. Greene then made Jungmann and the Stars pay. Greene lined a two-run double to left-center field making it 3-0.

Mobile added to their lead in the fourth inning. Sean Jamieson led off by reaching on a Nick Shaw error at shortstop. Mobile once again would capitalize off the Stars miscue. Greene added another RBI single making it 4-0. Then with the bases loaded, Peralta hit a grand slam down the left field line. The grand slam was the second of the series by the BayBears and it extended the lead to 8-0.

Jungmann pitched just four innings and gave up eight hits on eight runs as only five were earned runs. Jungmann struck out five in the loss.

Lee (2-2) held the Stars bats in check all night long. The Stars did finally get on the scoreboard in the seventh. Trailing 11-0, the Stars' Nick Ramirez led off by reaching on second baseman Michael Freeman's fielding error. Rogers then singled setting up an RBI single from Shawn Zarraga scoring Ramirez making it 11-1. Mitch Haniger also added an RBI single in the inning cutting it to an 11-2 deficit.

The BayBears came back with two runs in the eighth on a Jon Grffin RBI single and a Jake Lamb groundout to first base.

Lee pitched six innings and allowed five hits on one earned run in Mobile's win. He also struck out six.

The Stars and BayBears conclude their five-game series Wednesday morning at "The Joe" in Huntsville. The Stars will have LHP Brent Suter (2-0, 1.06) on the mound while Mobile will start RHP Bryan Woodall (0-0, 2.53). The game can be heard starting at 10:45 AM with Steve Jarnicki on the internet only at http://www.wtkiradio.com or huntsvillestars.com.

Huntsville Box Score

Well, Taylor Jungmann, Johnnie Lowe, and Eric Marzec combined to strike out nine and walk only one, but the BayBears whacked 17 hits, five for extra bases. Jungmann did hit two batters and his line in this one can be classified as "opposite of good", despite some faulty defense behind him.

Only two errors at third base for Jason Rogers thus far, so without video evidence, it's tricky to say if that experiment is truly going well.

We like catcher Adam Weisenburger, but Shawn Zarraga (.469/.538/.500) continues to rake, so go, both guys. Does the Crew really need all three of Robinzon Diaz, Matt Pagnozzi, and Lucas May in Nashville in expense of Zarraga (career stats worth reviewing) finally reaching AAA? Zarraga, in his 7th season out of high school, will be a minor league free agent at season's end.

Huntsville Game Log

Huntsville Bottom of the 6th

Johnnie Lowe strikes out swinging.

Josh Prince strikes out swinging.

Greg Hopkins strikes out swinging, catcher Steve Rodriguez to first baseman Jon Griffin.

Mobile Top of the 7th

Defensive Substitution: Brock Kjeldgaard replaces left fielder Josh Prince, batting 1st, playing left field.

11-0 at the time, likely just getting Brock a few innings...
