Brevard County Press Release --

Link includes VIDEO of the Postgame Interview we linked to last week

Jed Bradley named FSL Pitcher of the Week

Brevard southpaw hurled six shutout innings in win over Lakeland

VIERA, Fla. – The Florida State League announced on Monday that Brevard County Manatees left-handed pitcher Jed Bradley was named the league’s pitcher of the week for the period of April 14-20.

On April 16, Bradley threw six shutout innings and earned the win as the Manatees defeated the Lakeland Flying Tigers, 1-0 at Space Coast Stadium. The southpaw threw 76 pitches with 52 of them going for strikes, while allowing just two hits, striking out five and not issuing a walk.

Entering play on Monday, Bradley has the fourth highest strikeouts per nine innings pitched ratio in the FSL as he is averaging 8.80 strikeouts per nine innings. In three starts thus far in 2014, Bradley is 2-1 with a 4.70 ERA and has 15 strikeouts versus just two walks in 15.1 innings of work.

Bradley was the 15th overall selection by the Milwaukee Brewers in the 2011 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft out of Georgia Tech.

I wonder why he was pulled after 76 pitches? If he is throwing a good game like he obviously was he could have gone another couple innings for sure. No reason to baby Bradley's pitch count at this stage of his career.

This is something that has been going on for years in the Brewers' minor league system. Not just not letting guys go to 100+ pitches, but pulling pitchers short of 80 or 90. I don't get the larger logic behind it... shouldn't we be building these young guys' stamina?

Now in this instance, it's very early in the season yet, & who knows what else might have factored in. But this certainly isn't the first time you just have to scratch your head on when a Brewers MiLB SP was lifted from a good start.

AUDIO via Jeff Hem's blog --

"Tonight’s interview is this week’s “Mondays with the Manager” with Sounds skipper Rick Sweet, and there’s a lot to cover. Sweet gives updates on Johnny Hellweg and Kevin Mattison, who both left yesterday’s game with an injury, and how the Sounds can manage tonight and tomorrow with a short-handed bullpen since Alfredo Figaro was recalled to the Brewers and Rob Wooten, who was optioned by the Brewers, who won’t join the team until Thursday in Oklahoma City (Wednesday is an off day)."

Via Jeff Hem tweet --

Sounds manager Rick Sweet said Johnny Hellweg has right elbow discomfort & is on to Milwaukee for an MRI.

Not that possible TJ surgery is good news, but it is nice to see the Brewers jump on a MRI as opposed to the usual wait/rest 2 weeks and re-evaluate of the past.

Final: Brevard County 1, Tampa 2

Brevard's 11 hits not enough in 2-1 loss to Yanks

'Tees go 2-for-12 with runners in scoring position, leave nine on base

By Justin Rocke / Brevard County Manatees

TAMPA, Fla. - Despite 11 hits - with five of them being doubles - the Brevard County Manatees could only push one run across in a tough, 2-1 loss to the Tampa Yankees on Monday night at George M. Steinbrenner Field.

The Yankees (10-7) scored their only two runs right out of the gate against Manatees (10-7) starter Damien Magnifico (1-1, 3.43).

With two out and one on in the first inning, Dante Bichette, Jr. lined a single to center. Peter O'Brien then drew a walk after a 12-pitch battle, which featured six foul balls, bringing Angelo Gumbs to the plate.

On a 1-2 pitch, Gumbs grounded a single through the middle that scored Cito Culver and Bichette, Jr., to give the Yankees the only runs they would need. That would be the only real trouble for Magnifico on the night.

The right-hander worked through his 38-pitch first inning to shutout Tampa in his final four frames. Magnifico allowed just three hits the rest of the way and tied a season-high with three strikeouts.

Brevard County (10-7) put together multiple rallies, but could not come through with runners on base.

The best chance for the Manatees came in the top of the first as back-to-back singles by catcher Cameron Garfield and left fielder Victor Roache, followed by a walk to right fielder Michael Reed, loaded the bases.

First baseman Garrett Cooper would ground out to second to end the frame as Yankees starter Eric Wooten worked his way out of trouble. The three runners left on base would be the first of nine runners stranded by the Manatees.

Brevard County's only run against the left-hander would come in the fifth inning. After a double and a stolen base by shortstop Orlando Arcia, Roache would ground a ball off the glove of the Yankee starter for an infield single to make the score 2-1.

That would be the lone run surrendered by Wooten (2-0, 2.11) as he was battled through six innings of work. The Colorado native scattered eight hits, while walking one and striking out three.

The Manatees would make one last charge against left-handed reliever James Pazos in the ninth. After a lead off, ground-rule double by Nathan Orf and an infield single by Yadiel Rivera, Brevard had runners at the corners and nobody out.

However, Pazos proceeded to strike out Michael Garza. Rivera was then caught stealing second base after a Tyrone Taylor strike out to end the game.

The Manatees will battle the Yankees again on Tuesday night at 7:00 p.m. in the second game of the three-game series. Florida State League Pitcher of the Week Jed Bradley (2-1, 4.70) will take the mound for the Manatees against the Yankees' Rafael De Paula (1-1, 2.51).

Brevard County Box Score

The Manatees picked up 11 hits, but were only able to score one run. Nathan Orf had a pair of doubles and was hit by a pitch in his four plate appearances. His on base percentage is up to .471 on the year. Orlando Arcia was back at shortstop tonight and went 2-for-4 with a double and a stolen base. Victor Roache also had a 2-for-4 night. Michael Reed doubled and walked in four trips to the plate. Damien Magnifico pitched fairly well after the first inning, giving up just the two runs in five innings. Stephen Peterson was outstanding out of the bullpen to keep the game close. He gave up just one hit and struck out four. Garrett Cooper left the game in the sixth inning following a collision at first the previous inning. He stayed in the game following a visit from the trainer, but was lifted before his next at bat, replaced by Brandon Macias who went to third base with Mike Garza moving over to first.

Brevard County Play-By-Play

First and third with nobody out, but the Manatees couldn't push the tying run across.

Brevard County Top of the 9th

Pitching Change: James Pazos replaces Phil Wetherell.

Nathan Orf doubles (3) on a fly ball to right fielder Zach Wilson.

Yadiel Rivera singles on a ground ball to center fielder Jake Cave. Nathan Orf to 3rd.

Mike Garza strikes out swinging.

Tyrone Taylor strikes out swinging and Yadiel Rivera caught stealing 2nd, catcher Peter O'Brien to second baseman Angelo Gumbs.

Final: Mobile 2, @Huntsville 1

Stars Lose Pitcher's Duel

Huntsville, AL - The Mobile BayBears' Andrew Chafin (1-0) outdueled the Huntsville Stars' Drew Gagnon (2-1) in an outstanding pitcher's duel as Mobile edged the Stars 2-1.

The difference in the game was a one-out solo home run off the bat off Michael Freeman in the Mobile 3rd. Freeman's solo shot to right broke a 1-1 tie and was his second of the season and second in the series. Outside of the home run allowed to Freeman, Gagnon was outstanding.

Gagnon turned in a quality start pitching seven innings allowing two earned runs on five hits. He also struck out a season high six. Gagnon was the tough luck loser Monday night as the Stars offense could only muster three hits.

With the Stars trailing 1-0 going into their first at bat, Greg Hopkins tied it on a solo home run to left field. It was Hopkins' second home run of the season.

The lefty Chafin who entered the game with just 1 earned run allowed in 17.1 innings dominated the Stars. At one stretch of the game he had retired thirteen consecutive hitters.

The Stars had a chance to tie it in the seventh when the bases were loaded with two outs. Pinch hitter Shawn Zarraga lined out to center to end the Stars threat.

Chafin worked 6.1 innings allowing just two hits. He walked three and struck out five as he earned his first decision of the year in four starts.

The BayBears now lead the Stars two games to one in their five game series. Mobile improves to 10-8 while the Stars are 11-7. Huntsville sill enters Tuesday's game in first place in the Southern League North standings.

The Stars and BayBears play game four of their five-game series Tuesday night. The Stars will have RHP Taylor Jungmann (1-1, 3.18) on the mound while Mobile will start RHP Mike Lee (1-2, 5.82). The game can be heard starting at 6:15 PM with Steve Jarnicki on 92.9 FM, 1450 AM and http://www.wtkiradio.com.

Huntsville Box Score

Before 720 committed members of the lame-duck Huntsville baseball community on a 79-degree evening, RHP Drew Gagnon fanned six in seven innings - his previous strikeout high had been three. Tough-luck loss for Drew here. RHP Kevin Shackelford only needed 14 pitches over his two scoreless frames (one hit allowed).

Gagnon had one of the three Stars hits (Huntsville pitchers raking), but you'll see a lot of sorry batting averages in the box score. Stars hitting .229 after 18 games, which is actually good for 6th in the ten-team league. Huntsville did draw five walks, though, and continues to lead the league in that worthwhile category.

Sounds Blank Omaha In 7-0 Victory

Nashville's Nelson and Leach Combine for Two-Hit Shutout

Nashville Sounds

(MIKE STRASINGER )

PAPILLION, Neb. - The Nashville Sounds dominated the Omaha Storm Chasers Monday night at Werner Park, cruising to a 7-0 victory behind 10 hits and nine spotless innings from pitchers Jimmy Nelson (2-1) and Brent Leach.

Nelson was sharp out of the gate, retiring his first seven batters in succession and five via strikeout. The Brewers top prospect looked every bit of it, tossing seven scoreless frames for Nashville and limiting Omaha to two hits.

The 24-year-old, who led the Brewers farmhands with 163 strikeouts last season, fanned nine Storm Chasers on the day, one shy of his career-best. He walked only one.

Reliever Brent Leach stepped in to deliver a pair spotless innings for Nashville to combine with Nelson for the two-hit shutout, the team's first of the season. Leach faced the minimum and fired three strikeouts of his own.

Offensively, the Sounds took off with four runs in the third inning as Eugenio Velez, 2-for-4, started the frame with a leadoff single. Outfielder Caleb Gindl reached base on a fielding error by second baseman Christian Colon, who tried tagging Velez on the base path but dropped the ball instead for no outs. Sean Halton drew a walk, which set the table for catcher Robinzon Diaz's bases-clearing three-run double to the left-field corner.

Jeremy Hermida, 2-for-4, pushed Diaz to third with an infield single. Diaz scored on the following ball put in play: a groundout from Hector Gomez.

Nashville picked up three more runs in the sixth inning, highlighted by Halton's two-run home run over the right-field wall. The jack is Halton's first of the season and scored Gindl, who reached base on a hit-and-run single that plated Velez from second.

First baseman Hunter Morris, 0-for-5, faced the bases loaded three times in the contest, but came up empty each time, ending his season-best hit streak at five games. Collectively the Sounds went 3-for-16 with runners in scoring position and left 13 runners on base.

Omaha starter John Lamb (0-4) was charged with the loss, surrendering four runs, two earned, on six hits and four walks over 4 1/3 innings of work.

The Sounds wrap their four-game series against the Storm Chasers (AAA-Royals) Tuesday at 11:05 a.m. The Sounds will send RHP Hiram Burgos (1-2, 5.79) to the hill opposite the Chasers RHP Sugar Ray Marimon (1-0, 1.00). Jeff Hem has the call on 102.5-FM "The GAME"

Nashville Boxscore

It would be tough to say anymore about Jimmy Nelson than has already been said in the thread.

In addition to the batting lines discussed above Taylor Green had a nice day (1-2,2BB).
