Gomez:

"I'm not apologizing for nothing I did today. This is my job, I've been doing it for eight years like that. They know I play like that. It's not to disrespect nobody," Gomez said, reported Adam McCalvy of MLB.com. "I heard something I don't like. I don't think [Cole's] the one who tells me what I have to do. I don't tell him what he needs to do to pitch."

He also made statements that other guys watch it and nobody cares - even pointed out 3 different examples of Pirates that did it in the series. Gomez flips his bat quite often, it's just what he does. And even if he WAS admiring it, it was only a second or two. Watch Ortiz or Soriano or Pujols. They stare down every deep fly ball, even the ones that are caught. Soriano goes to an extreme and NOTHING is ever said or done about it. What Gomez did was really quite minimal. You can see something like that or worst on probably 50% of the HR in the league. Yet when him or Braun do it, immediate jerks.

Cole:

'If you're going to hit a home run, you can watch it. If you're going to hit a fly ball to center field, don't watch it," per MLB.com. "I didn't curse at him, I didn't try to provoke a fight. I was frustrated, and I let my emotions get the better of me and I ended up getting one of my teammates hurt, so I'm not too thrilled about it."

So let me get this straight on three levels.

1 - You're in a 0-0 game in the third inning...you're pitching well. Gomez hits a triple and you get frustrated. He wasn't getting shelled. There hadn't been 3 errors in the inning. Gomez was only the second base runner of the game I believe. That's all it takes to frustrate you? Maybe you're frustrated by your pitch but that's your own problem.

2 - You aren't trying to start a fight. You got the ball, the proceeded to GO OUT OF YOUR WAY to approach Gomez. Yelled directly at him. Nobody knows what was said (but Gomez said he used the F word). How is that not trying to start something? You approached someone and yelled that them, what exactly did you think Gomez was going to do?

3 - Cole DID instigate the fight, then as soon as he saw Gomez was fired up and yelled back, Cole basically ran away and hid behind all of his teammates. In no way do I promote physical violence on the playing field, but if you're going to get frustrated and yell at an opposing player like that, at least be a big enough man to stand your ground if that player gets upset by your verbal abuse. Don't go hide behind your teammates, especially when you have a pretty large size advantage.

Oh and I just saw this from Russell Martin...you stay classy Mr. Martin:

Russell Martin: "The fair thing would be for our team to hold down Maldonado so Travis (Snider) can go back and sucker punch him in the face"

They highlighted on Sportcenter Cargo admiring a sac fly on the last homestand. So he seems to have some history of to use the young kids lingo, pimping it, at home plate.

That said, his not running hard out of the box could have cost us the game. He could have had an inside the parker.

To say that the decision is 'hilarious' based on a tiny sample size of 18 games is a simple fallacy. Yes, Lucroy has a marginally higher BA this year, but overall, I think your run expectency is higher with Braun at the dish.

Ok, thanks for clarifying that my personally finding something hilarious is a fallacy. Lucroy has a >.400 OBP this season, but IBB'ing somebody there to get to Lucroy was a smart move. Got it. :rolleyes

Is baseball the only sport where celebrating is essentially banned? Guys in soccer coordinate dance routines, in hockey they fall on the ice and grope each other after a goal, in football they jump into the crowd, and in basketball they hold up the amount of points they just scored after a long shot on both hands. Through all this the opponents don't bat an eye and the fans encourage it. I seriously don't get what makes it so offensive to trot or watch your ball when it's hit far... Who cares?

This is a pretty valid point. Take the NFL for example. Guy gets a sack...gets up and does some sort of weird dance move (Jarred Allen for example). Or does a grave digging motion. Right in front of the QB and the oline guys he just beat. Or a WR leaps and catches a TD. Spikes the ball right in the DB face. Nothing happens. In baseball, a guy WATCHES the ball he hit, and that's grounds for fights, beanball wars, etc? It makes no sense. It's not like Gomez hit the ball, looked out at Cole and crotch chopped him or anything. He stood and watched his ball....for a second or two.

Watch the MLB Must-C "Combo" video for two hilarious highlights: the first is the Pirates fan spiking his glove after Braun's home run. The second is Uecker screaming "He got it. He GOT it!" in the background of Joe Block's Khris Davis home run call.

Thanks for the tip. Hearing Uecker in the background was great. Here is a link for the lazy http://m.mlb.com/video/topic/11493214/v32254095/must-c-combo-braun-and-davis-crack-two-big-homers

i agree what did Tabata do when he thought it was HR instead he only got a double a real jerk. But their is always a double standard and Glad Maldo nailed Sninder he tried to add more instead of standing away, PS Comments from Martin are as classless as i heard in a while.

Cole lied about not swearing...he dropped the F-bomb at Carlos...I heard it on the audio....don't have a link.

Gomez's problem is he needs to match his response to the other side's. If he stays on the base and just curses back nothing happens......It's over in 30 seconds.

Yes. San Francisco fans are still pissed about the Prince Fielder bowling ball celebration, which was, by the way, fantastic.
