Nelson Strong In Sounds 7-1 Loss

Nashville Starter Tosses 3rd Consecutive Quality Start

Nashville Sounds

(MIKE STRASINGER )

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The Nashville Sounds held it close through seven innings of Wednesday's morning game at Greer Stadium, but a six-spot in the eighth by the visiting Memphis Redbirds proved to be the difference in Nashville's 7-1 loss.

Tied 1-1 in the 8th inning, the Redbirds loaded the bases for Memphis outfielder Randal Grichuk, 2-for-3, who drew a walk from Donovan Hand to give Memphis the lead.

The inning continued with each of Memphis' batters stepping to the plate. Oscar Taveras and Xavier Scruggs provided the big hits for the R-birds, each with two-run singles. Catcher Audry Perez tacked on one more with his single into right field.

Michael Blazek (0-1) started the inning, allowing a hit and walk to Memphis, before Donovan Hand came in with relief. The right-hander allowed both of his inherited runners to score and was charged with four himself over 1/3 inning. Johnnie Lowe closed out the frame, but not before allowing Perez's RBI-single.

The bright spot on the day was the performance turned in by Sounds starter and Brewers top prospect Jimmy Nelson, who limited Memphis batters to one run on three hits across six innings of work for his third consecutive quality start this season. He fanned six Redbirds and walked two, throwing 64 of his 101 pitches for strikes.

Down 1-0, Sounds catcher Matt Pagnozzi tied the game in the fifth inning with a two-out single into left-field. The hit was Pagnozzi's first of the season and scored outfielder Eugenio Velez from second base.

Velez drove a double into right field to begin the inning, giving him hits in each of his nine starts this season. He closed out his 2013 campaign on a 22-game hit streak.

Memphis' Grichuk hit a triple in the third inning for the Redbirds first run. The extra-base hit scored starting pitcher Tyler Lyons (2-0), who reached base on balls.

Lyons scattered five Nashville hits over seven innings to pick up his second win of the year, striking out six and one walk.

The Sounds play game three of their four-game series against the Memphis Redbirds (AAA-Cardinals) on Thursday at 7:05 p.m. The Sounds will send RHP Hiram Burgos (0-2, 6.00) to the hill opposite the Redbirds RHP Scott McGregor (0-1, 3.24). Jeff Hem has the call on 102.5-FM "The GAME".

Nashville Boxscore

Jimmy Nelson was very good, there's nothing not to like about his line so far this season.

The Sounds managed just five hits, Caleb Gindl was (1-3,2B).

Nashville Recap

Unexpectedly ugly inning for Hand, Blazek has struggled as of late as well.

I think Nelson presents a much more interesting dynamic to the Thornburg question. When we need a starter this year in my mind Nelson's progress is a big factor in whether or not you move Thornburg into the rotation. I'm not afraid to make that move, but if Nelson keeps dealing I figure he would get the first call.

Final Game 1: Wisconsin 10, Lansing 7 (8 Innings)

Wisconsin Game 1 Boxscore

In a sloppy game where it appeared the Rattlers were doing everything they could to lose, Jose Pena plays the hero once again and walks 'em off with a 3HR.

I'm pretty sure Erickson hates us (or at least me) because he won't have Clint Coulter catch when a game is being televised so I have nothing to report on him defensively.

Chris McFarland was (2-4,2B) raising his average to .343, Jose Pena ended up (2-5,HR) but he was robbed of extra bases on a fantastic diving play by the CF in the left center gap to end the 1st. Angel Ortega and Omar Garcia both doubled for their hits.

Tyler Alexander looked much better than the last time I watched him pitch, his final line was 4 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, and 6 SO while throwing 39 of 53 pitches for strikes.

Wisconsin Game 1 Recap

In a familiar theme the T-Rats missed a chance early, though the play which ended the inning was fantastic as discussed above.

Wisconsin Bottom of the 1st

  • Omar Garcia strikes out swinging.
Christopher McFarland doubles (2) on a line drive to right fielder Carlos Ramirez.
    Michael Ratterree walks.
With Clint Coulter batting, Christopher McFarland steals (5) 3rd base. Michael Ratterree steals (1) 2nd base.
Clint Coulter pops out to shortstop Dawel Lugo.
Jose Pena lines out to center fielder D. Davis.

Wisconsin took a 2-1 lead after the 2nd.

Wisconsin Bottom of the 2nd

  • Taylor Smith-Brennan singles on a line drive to center fielder D. J. Davis.
David Denson singles on a ground ball to shortstop Dawel Lugo. David Denson to 2nd. Taylor Smith-Brennan advances to 3rd, on a throwing error by shortstop Dawel Lugo.
Rafael Neda grounds out, shortstop Dawel Lugo to first baseman Matt Dean. Taylor Smith-Brennan scores. David Denson to 3rd.
Angel Ortega out on a sacrifice fly to center fielder D. J. Davis. David Denson scores.
Omar Garcia bunt grounds out, pitcher Jairo Labourt to first baseman Matt Dean.

Taylor Williams had a rough game, it started to unravel in the 3rd and got away in the 4th.

Lansing Top of the 3rd

  • Derrick Loveless strikes out swinging.
    D. J. Davis flies out to left fielder Jose Pena.
    Dickie Joe Thon walks.
Matt Dean homers (1) on a fly ball to left field. Dickie Joe Thon scores.
    Mitch Nay walks.
Dawel Lugo pops out to first baseman David Denson.

Lansing Top of the 4th

  • Jason Leblebijian singles on a ground ball to shortstop Angel Ortega.
Carlos Ramirez singles on a ground ball to center fielder Omar Garcia. Jason Leblebijian to 2nd.
Jorge Saez out on a sacrifice bunt, pitcher Taylor Williams to second baseman Christopher McFarland. Jason Leblebijian to 3rd. Carlos Ramirez to 2nd.
Derrick Loveless singles on a line drive to right fielder Michael Ratterree. Jason Leblebijian scores. Carlos Ramirez scores.
    D. J. Davis doubles (4) on a ground ball to left fielder Jose Pena. Derrick Loveless scores. Davis to 3rd on the throw.
Dickie Joe Thon strikes out swinging.
Matt Dean pops out to shortstop Angel Ortega.

The T-Rats hung in there and came back to tie the game in the bottom of the 4th.

Wisconsin Bottom of the 4th

  • Taylor Smith-Brennan walks.
David Denson walks. Taylor Smith-Brennan to 2nd.
Rafael Neda walks. Taylor Smith-Brennan to 3rd. David Denson to 2nd.
Angel Ortega doubles (4) on a line drive to center fielder D. J. Davis. Taylor Smith-Brennan scores. David Denson scores. Rafael Neda to 3rd.
Pitching Change: Brady Dragmire replaces Jairo Labourt.
Omar Garcia doubles (3) on a line drive to left fielder Dickie Joe Thon. Rafael Neda scores. Angel Ortega scores.
Christopher McFarland grounds out, second baseman Jason Leblebijian to first baseman Matt Dean.
With Michael Ratterree batting, Omar Garcia steals (7) 3rd base.
Michael Ratterree strikes out swinging, catcher Jorge Saez to first baseman Matt Dean.
    Clint Coulter strikes out swinging.

The first play in extra innings was pretty awful all the way around. Brennan double clutched the throw for some reason which pulled Denson off the bag but David caught the throw and tagged the runner. In the process of the tag he loses the ball as he spins and it flies out of his glove going past 2nd base and into short CF! The go ahead run was also scored on a misplay, Pena came in on the ball but it ended up over his on the warning track for double that shouldn't have been. The final play of the inning was just as strange, I hope Chris covers in that in the blog or there is a video highlight of the play but Alexander picked off the runner at 1st who lit out for 2nd, and the runner on 3rd strayed too far from 3rd, he just froze and Denson ran all the away across the diamond for the tag between home and 3rd.

Lansing Top of the 8th

  • Jason Leblebijian reaches on a throwing error by third baseman Taylor Smith-Brennan. Jason Leblebijian advances to 2nd, on a missed catch error by first baseman David Denson.
    Carlos Ramirez strikes out swinging.
Jorge Saez grounds out, shortstop Angel Ortega to first baseman David Denson. Jason Leblebijian to 3rd.
Derrick Loveless doubles (1) on a fly ball to left fielder Jose Pena. Jason Leblebijian scores.
    D. J. Davis singles on a bunt ground ball to pitcher Tyler Alexander. Derrick Loveless to 3rd.
With Ian Parmley batting, Derrick Loveless caught stealing home, pitcher Tyler Alexander to first baseman David Denson.

The walk off!

Wisconsin Bottom of the 8th

  • Pitching Change: Scott Silverstein replaces Alberto Tirado.
    Omar Garcia strikes out swinging.
Christopher McFarland doubles (3) on a line drive to center fielder D. J. Davis.
    Michael Ratterree walks.
Clint Coulter reaches on a fielding error by shortstop Dawel Lugo. Christopher McFarland scores. Michael Ratterree to 2nd.
Jose Pena homers (1) on a line drive to left field. Michael Ratterree scores. Clint Coulter scores.

Pena's walkoff homer lifts Rattlers to win in game one

Wisconsin tops Lansing 10-7 in eight innings

By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers

GRAND CHUTE, WI - Jose Pena finished an up-and-down eighth inning on a high note with a three-run, walkoff home run to cap the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers 10-7 comeback victory over the Lansing Lugnuts Wednesday night in game one of a doubleheader at Neuroscience Group Field at Fox Cities Stadium.

DJ Davis started the game with a bunt single that hugged the third base line and clipped the left corner of the bag. Mitch Nay drove him in from second base with a two-out single to put Lansing (3-8) up 1-0.

The Rattlers (7-4) had runners at second and third with two outs in the bottom of the first. Jose Pena lifted a fly ball deep to left-center, but Davis denied the Rattlers any runs with a spectacular diving catch for the final out of the frame.

Wisconsin grabbed the lead in the bottom of the second inning. Taylor Brennan and David Denson reached on singles and an error moved both of them into scoring position. Rafael Neda drove in Brennan with a grounder. Angel Ortega drove in Denson with a sacrifice fly and the Rattlers were up 2-1.

The Lugnuts went back in front with a two-out rally in the top of the third. Wisconsin starting pitcher Taylor Williams retired the first two batters of the inning, but walked Dickie Joe Thon to extend the inning. Matt Dean lined the next pitch over the wall in left for a two-run homer.

Lansing extended their lead with three runs in the top of the fourth. Derrick Loveless knocked in the first two runs of the inning with a single. He would score on a double to left by Davis.

The Rattlers came back again in the bottom of the fourth inning. Lansing starting pitcher Jairo Labourt walked the first three batters of the inning. Ortega drove in two with a double and knocked Labourt out of the game. Omar Garcia greeted Lugnut reliever Brady Dagmire with a two-run double to tie the game 6-6.

Lansing broke the tie with an unearned run off Wisconsin reliever Tyler Alexander in the top of the seventh. Jason Leblebijian started the inning and reached second when there were two errors on his grounder to third base. Alexander got the next two outs. He appeared to get the third out when Loveless sent a fly ball to left. But, the wind fooled Pena. He came in on the ball and the wind blew the ball to the warning track for an RBI double and a 7-6 lead.

The Rattlers rallied again in the bottom of the ninth. Chris McFarland hustled into second with a one out double.and Michael Ratterree drew a walk, his third of the game. Clint Coulter's grounder to the hole deflected off the glove of shortstop Dawel Lugo for an error and McFarland raced home with the tying run. That brought Pena to the plate with a chance to redeem his miscue in the top of the inning.

Pena, who hit ten home runs in the Arizona League during the 2013 season, lifted a deep fly down the left field line and it stayed fair for his first home run of the season to give the Rattlers a 10-7 win in game one of the doubleheader.

The win was the third straight for the Rattlers. The loss was the fifth straight for the Lugnuts.

HOME RUNS:

LAN:

Matt Dean (1st, 1 on in 3rd inning off Taylor Williams, 2 out)

WIS:

Jose Pena (1st, 2 on in 8th inning off Scott Silverstein, 1 out)

Final: @Mississippi 3, Huntsville 0

Stars Get Shut Out in Mississippi

Pearl, MS - The Huntsville Stars were shutout for the first time this season. The Mississippi Braves blanked the Stars 3-0 Wednesday afternoon at Trustmark Park.

Stars starter Taylor Jungmann (1-1) was the tough luck loser as he turned in a quality start for the second time in his three outings. Jungmann worked six innings and allowed his only runs in the second inning.

After Jungmann retired the first four batters of the game, Kyle Kubitza and David Rohm singled back to back. Then Robby Hefflinger drove a ground rule double over the head of centerfielder Mitch Haniger scoring Kubitza giving the Braves a 1-0 lead. Braden Schlehuber followed with a groundout to shortstop Nick Shaw scoring Rohm extending the lead to 2-0.

Braves' starter Williams Perez (1-1) held the Stars offense in check all afternoon. He didn't allow a hit until Josh Prince's single in the fourth. Perez ended up pitching 5.2 scoreless innings allowing only two hits with five strikeouts.

The Stars had opportunities in the sixth, seventh, eighth, and ninth innings but stranded nine runners on base during the final four innings of the game.

In the ninth, with the bases loaded and two outs Shae Simmons notched his fourth save when he struck out Shawn Zarraga to end the game.

Mississippi got an insurance run in the eighth on a Cedric Hunter sacrifice fly. Mississippi improved to 6-7 and the Stars fell to 8-5 on the season.

The Stars and Braves will play game four of their series Thursday night. LHP Brent Suter (1-0, 1.64) will start for Huntsville while RHP J.R. Graham (0-0, 0.00) will take the hill for Mississippi. The game can be heard starting at 6:45 PM with Steve Jarnicki on 92.9 FM, 1450 AM and http://www.wtkiradio.com.

Huntsville Box Score

Thanks for your patience, folks. You can assume on Brewers weekday games that I'm DVR'ing the Crew and staying offline until late.

Stars only had four hits (all singles), but walked seven times, yet did not score. Huntsville players have walked a league-leading 54 times in 13 games, over four per game, nice! Only 86 K's, reasonable.

Josh Prince singled and walked, he has now split time almost evenly between second base and left field (LF today). Right fielder Brock Kjeldgaard was the only other Star to reach twice, both by walk. Mitch Haniger was 0-for-4, now 7-for-45 (.156).

Taylor Jungmann was solid as noted above (6 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 2 BB, 4 K, 1 WP, ten ground ball outs). His line was protected by RHP Kevin Shackelford, who inherited two Jungmann baserunners and allowed neither to score. Shackelford allowed an insurance run an inning later, however.

Huntsville Game Log

Stars didn't place a runner in scoring position until the 6th, then it was a strand-o-rama down the stretch...

VIERA, Fla. - Six shutout innings from starting pitcher Jed Bradley helped the Brevard County Manatees to a 1-0 win on Wednesday night at Space Coast Stadium and complete a three-game sweep of the Lakeland Flying Tigers.

Bradley (2-1, 4.70) allowed just two hits, struck out five and did not issue a walk en route to his second win of the season. The southpaw did not allow a hit until his second time through the Lakeland (7-6) order and only allowed two men to reach scoring position against him.

On the opposite side, Lakeland starter Jake Thompson (2-1, 0.48) took a tough-luck loss as he pitched seven innings and only gave up one run on four hits.

The Manatees (9-4) scored the only run of the contest in the sixth inning. Tyrone Taylor led off the frame with a double over the head of left fielder Chad Wright. Taylor's Minor League-leading 10th double of the season opened the door for Orlando Arcia, who singled to score Taylor.

Brevard's bullpen took the game the rest of the way for Bradley. Left-hander Mike Strong pitched a scoreless seventh and righty Tanner Poppe pitched the final two frames to record his fourth save. Poppe struck out four and only allowed one hit to close out the Manatees' first series sweep of the year.

The 'Tees begin a three-game series against the first-place Dunedin Blue Jays (11-2) on Thursday night at Space Coast Stadium. Jorge Lopez (1-1, 4.91) is expected to start for Brevard against Dunedin's Jesse Hernandez (0-1, 4.50). First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m.

Brevard County Box Score

It's exciting to see a start like this out of Jed Bradley. Six innings, two hits and five strikeouts. Hopefully Bradley can continue to build on the success he's had in his last two outings. Mike Strong and Tanner Poppe continued the excellent effort from the Manatees pitching staff with three shutout relief innings. Poppe picked up his fourth save as he and Tommy Toledo continue to alternate turns in the closer's role. Tyrone Taylor with another double now has had ten of his fourteen hits this season go for doubles. Orlando Arcia, Cameron Garfield and Alfredo Rodriguez had the other three hits for Brevard.

Brevard County Play-By-Play

The only run of the game came following Tyrone Taylor's double in the sixth

Brevard County Bottom of the 6th

Astin & Archer combine for 1-0 shutout and Rattlers sweep Lansing

Astin tosses six scoreless for third win of the season

By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattler

NOTE:

There was a scoring change in game one of the doubleheader. The E-6 that scored Chris McFarland in the bottom of the eighth inning has been changed to an RBI single for Clint Coulter. The corrected boxscore for game one may be found here. There will be an edit to the game story on the Timber Rattlers website ASAP, but it may take time for the correction to show up in the story.

GRAND CHUTE, WI - The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers pitching tandem of Barrett Astin and Tristan Archer combined on a four-hit shutout of the Lansing Lugnuts in game two of Wednesday's doubleheader at Neuroscience Group Field at Fox Cities Stadium. Steve Halcomb drove the lone run of the game for a 1-0 win to give the Rattlers a doubleheader sweep of the Lugnuts.

Astin allowed just three hits, didn't walk a batter and struck out three over six innings as he picked up his third victory in his third appearance of the season.

The Rattlers (8-4) had trouble breaking through against Lansing starting pitcher Chase De Jong, who allowed two hits and struck out four over four innings. But, Wisconsin got going in the fifth against reliever Adonys Cardona.

David Denson started the Wisconsin rally in the fifth with a single. Taylor Brennan followed with a single to put runners on first and second with no outs. Chris McFarland couldn't get the bunt down to move the runners along, but a grounder to third resulted in only a force play at second base to put runners on the corners for Halcomb.

Halcomb grounded out to second to knock in Denson for the 1-0 lead.

Astin went back out for the top of the sixth and retired the side in order to extend his current scoreless streak to 10-1/3 innings.

Tristan Archer came on in the top of the seventh to protect the one run lead. Then, he walked the leadoff batter and allowed a single to the first two batters he faced. Lansing (3-9) had runners at first and second with no outs. Archer regrouped and retired the next three batters to close out the game and earn his second save of the season.

The previous game that featured Archer and Astin as the tandem for the Rattlers was a 3-0 Wisconsin win on April 10 at West Michigan. Archer tossed five scoreless innings and Astin went four scoreless frames as the duo shutout the Whitecaps on three hits. They haven't allowed a run in 16-1/3 innings.

The victory moved Wisconsin's current winning streak to four games.

The Timber Rattlers begin a three game series with the Great Lakes Loons on Thursday night. Victor Diaz (0-0, 1.50) is the scheduled starting pitcher for Wisconsin. Great Lakes has announced Victor Arano (0-0, 1.93) as their starting pitcher. Game time at Neuroscience Group Field at Fox Cities Stadium is 6:35pm.

The first 1,000 fans to attend the game will receive a poster of Timber Rattlers infielder Chris McFarland courtesy of Dunkin Donuts. Plus, tomorrow is an Arty's Old Fashioned Thirsty Thursday. Fans may enjoy 22 ounce sodas, 16 ounce beers, and Arty's Old Fashioned drinks courtesy of Arty's and 95.9 KISS-FM.

If you can't make it out to the ballpark, tune in for the broadcast on AM1280 or IHeartRadio starting with the pregame show at 6:15pm. Thursday's game is also available on MiLB.TV.

WP: Barrett Astin (3-0)

LP: Adonys Cardona (0-2)

SAVE: Tristan Archer (2)

TIME: 1:32

Wisconsin Game 2 Boxscore

Barrett Astin is having a fine start to his season. The only velocity reading Chris gave on Tristan Archer was something 86 MPH on the outside corner.

Taylor Brennan had a perfect nightcap going 2-2 and accounted for half the Rattler's offense as they had 4 total hits.

Wisconsin Game 2 Recap

With a game just over 90 minutes not much to see here, though they did run themselves out of the 2nd, Coulter was headed to 3rd on the pitch.

VIDEO - Biloxi continues to assume that the Brewers relationship is a given for 2015-16, so their news broadcast produced a feature on a slumping Mitch Haniger.

And yes, the sportscaster opening screen grab with a giant fish over his shoulder is the funniest thing you'll see all day...

M-Braves pitching shuts down Stars

Patrick Magee, sunherald.com

PEARL - Four Mississippi Braves pitchers combined to shutout the Huntsville Stars, 3-0, Wednesday afternoon at Trustmark Park in Southern League action.

Starting pitcher Williams Perez (1-1) took the victory for the Braves with 5 2/3 scoreless innings. He was followed in relief by Ryne Harper, James Hoyt and Shae Simmons, who picked up his fourth save.

"Their pitcher (Perez) did a good job of mixing in and out and working three pitches for strikes," Stars manager Carlos Subero said. "He did a good job and the relievers were able to come in and shut the door."

Huntsville (8-5) has lost four out of its last five games after starting the season 7-1.

The Stars will be re-named before they make the move to Biloxi for the 2015 campaign after dealing with waning attendance in Huntsville, Ala, in recent seasons.

Wednesday's 11 a.m. game was played before a crowd of 5,556 - mostly local students taking part in a "School Day" promotion.

The Stars squandered their two best opportunities to get on the scoreboard by leaving the bases loaded in the seventh and ninth innings.

Adam Weisenberger flew out to left in the seventh to leave the bases full and his replacement at catcher, Shawn Zarraga, struck out watching Simmons' bottom-of-the-zone breaking ball in the bottom of the ninth to end the game with the bases loaded.

"It happens," Subero said. "Part of it is you don't execute, but part is Simmons picked it up a notch and made a great slider to finish the ball game. I think it goes hand in hand. Weisenberger had a good count, 2-0. We didn't get it done. But (in Zarraga's) at-bat, Simmons did a good job of executing."

The Stars managed just four hits on Wednesday after putting up a combined 11 hits in Tuesday's doubleheader, which was split by the two teams.

Former University of Texas star right-hander Taylor Jungmann (1-1) was solid in a losing effort for the Stars on Wednesday. He gave up two earned runs on six hits while striking out four and walking two.

Jungmann's only struggles came in the second inning when he suffered a cut on his throwing hand. After a significant delay, the training staff found that Super Glue was the best remedy.

Jungmann allowed an RBI double to Robby Hefflinger and an RBI groundout to Braeden Schlehuber for the Braves' two runs in the second.

The 6-foot-6 Jungmann picked it up over the next four innings before giving way to reliever Kevin Shacklelford with two men on and none out in the seventh.

"Something like (the cut) can affect a pitcher, but I thought (Jungmann) battled through that and really pitched well after that," said Weisenberger, who went 1-for-3 at the plate.

Gustavo Nunez, Joe Leonard and David Rohm each had two hits to lead the way for the Braves (6-7).
