AUDIO Via Jeff Hem's blog --

"Today’s interview is with Sounds second baseman Pete Orr, a 34-year-old veteran who’s played over 400 games in the big leagues with the Braves, Nationals and Phillies. He’s also played in over 1,000 minor league games, a ton of which have been at Triple-A. He nailed an RBI triple last night, made a great play on defense late in the game and also hit what would have been a tape measure home run to right if not for a stiff wind blowing in from that direction. He discusses his game last night, his season so far, coming to the Brewers as a minor league free agent and some of the keys to being successful at Triple-A."

While not every prospect has started hot, a lot of the higher ceiling guys are off to nice starts certainly now that Coulter seems to be finding his power stroke. I'm not afraid to enjoy or plug guys who produce, but enjoy limited scouting hype. However I'd much rather see the players who have the tools produce.

Final: Brevard County 2, Dunedin 6

Dunedin powers past Brevard in Sunday matinee

By Andrew Luftglass / Brevard County Manatees

DUNEDIN, Fla. - Brevard County Manatees starting pitcher Hobbs Johnson allowed two-run homers in back-to-back innings to the Dunedin Blue Jays on Sunday afternoon, en route to a 6-2 loss at Florida Auto Exchange Stadium.

Brevard County (6-4) entered the third inning with a 2-1 lead, but that is when the long ball bit the 'Tees. K.C. Hobson drilled a two-run shot over the right field wall to put Dunedin (8-2) on top.

The following inning, Kevin Patterson duplicated Hobson's feat. The left-handed hitter sent a Johnson (1-1, 4.91) offering over the right-center field wall to give the Jays a 5-2 advantage.

In all, Johnson allowed six runs on eight hits in five innings of work, while walking two and striking out three. Martin Viramontes relieved Johnson and went the rest of the way as he threw three scoreless innings.

The 'Tees scored early, but their bats cooled off quickly. Parker Berberet opened the scoring in the second with a sacrifice fly to score Yadiel Rivera. The next inning, Victor Roache singled through the left side to bring Orlando Arcia home.

Dunedin's bullpen kept the Manatees quiet in the latter stages of the game. Justin Jackson earned his first win of the season in relief. Jackson pitched 3.2 scoreless innings and did not allow a hit, while walking two men and striking out four. Chad Girodo surrendered no runs and no hits over the final three frames to pick up his first save of 2014.

With the win, the Blue Jays took two out of three games from Brevard County. The Manatees now head home for a six-game homestand, beginning on Monday night against the Lakeland Flying Tigers (7-3).

Brevard County is scheduled to throw Tyler Wagner (2-0, 0.87) against Lakeland's Edgar De La Rosa (0-2, 2.00). First pitch is slated for 6:35 p.m. at Space Coast Stadium.

Brevard County Box Score

Today's outing didn't go quite as well for Hobbs Johnson as his first start. They mentioned on the radio broadast that he was hanging his curveball and that came back to bite him, as he allowed six runs on eight hits over five innings. Martin Viramontes had some success out of the pen, tossing three shutout innings, but the offense never got going for the Manatees. A double by Yadiel Rivera and singles by Victor Roache and Nathan Orf accounted for the only hits. Orf reached base in all four plate appearances. He walked twice, had an infield single, and was of course, hit by a pitch. The 'Tees did manage to draw six walks. Two each by Orf, Cameron Garfield and Orlando Arcia.

Brevard County Play-By-Play

Brevard's best chance for a big inning was quickly snuffed out by former infielder - turned outfielder - turned pitcher Justin Jackson.

Brevard County Top of the 3rd

Tyrone Taylor grounds out, third baseman Emilio Guerrero to first baseman K. C. Hobson.

Orlando Arcia walks.

Cameron Garfield walks. Orlando Arcia to 2nd.

Victor Roache singles on a ground ball to left fielder Marcus Knecht. Orlando Arcia scores. Cameron Garfield to 2nd.

Pitching Change: Justin Jackson replaces Kramer Champlin.

Garrett Cooper grounds into a double play, third baseman Emilio Guerrero to second baseman Christian Lopes to first baseman K. Hobson. Victor Roache out at 2nd.

Wisconsin hits five homers in 11-7 win at South Bend

Coulter launches two taters; Ratterree, Brennan, & McFarland join the party

By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers

SOUTH BEND, IN - The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers used five home runs to build a lead on Sunday at Four Winds Field against the South Bend Silver Hawks. But, it was patience and soft singles the helped the Rattlers break a 7-7 with four runs in the top of the eighth inning on the way to an 11-7 victory.

Clint Coulter put the Rattlers (6-4) in front with a leadoff home run in the second inning. The homer was the third of the season and second in as many days for Coulter, but he wasn't done.

The Wisconsin catcher came up in the third inning with two on base and lifted another deep, no-doubt home run to left field. The three-run home run gave Coulter three homers and eight RBI in the last two days.

Later in the inning, Taylor Brennan crushed his own home run. This one was a solo shot and the Rattlers were up 5-0.

South Bend (4-6) got on the scoreboard in the fourth inning on a two-run home run by Zach Esquerra.

Michael Ratterree got into the long ball act in the top of the fifth inning with a solo home run to left and Wisconsin was up 6-2.

The Hawks cut into the lead again in the bottom of the fifth. Andrew Velazquez tripled and scored on a groundout by Jamie Westbrook. Rattlers starting pitcher Zach Quintana left after the fifth inning with the lead.

In the sixth, South Bend rallied for a run off Wisconsin reliever Tyler Linehan. Esquerra walked and went to second on a wild pitch. Colin Bray drove in Esquerra with a double and the Rattlers were up 6-4.

Chris McFarland padded the Rattlers advantage back to 7-4 with a two-out solo home run to left. McFarland's second home run of the season was the fifth home run in the game for the Rattlers. The last time Wisconsin hit five home runs in a game was on June 8, 2007 at Kane County. The Rattlers lost that game 11-8.

South Bend tried to repeat history by scoring three times in the bottom of the seventh. Linehan got the first out, but a double and two walks loaded the bases. Esquerra was at the plate and he sent a grounder to third. Brennan picked the grounder and stepped on third for the second out, but his throw to first for the inning-ending double play was wild. Two runs scored and Esquerra wound up a second base. Bray tied the game with a single to center.

Wisconsin regrouped in the top of the eighth. David Denson and Johnny Davis drew back-to-back walks with one out. Omar Garcia loaded the bases with a single to left. Francisco Castillo put the Rattlers back in front with a bloop single to left-center that scored Denson.

Ratterree drew a walk to force in Davis from third for the second run. A wild pitch let Garcia score for a 10-7 lead. McFarland capped the inning with a sacrifice fly to scored Castillo.

Harvey Martin came out of the Rattlers bullpen and closed out the game with two scoreless innings.

Wisconsin concluded their six-game road trip with a 4-2 record. They won two-of-three at West Michigan and South Bend.

The Timber Rattlers return home to begin a six-game homestand with three games against the Lansing Lugnuts and three more against the Great Lakes Loons at Neuroscience Group Field at Fox Cities Stadium.

The Rattlers match up with the Lugnuts first with a 6:35pm game on Monday. Taylor Williams (1-0, 0.00) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers. Jairo Labourt (0-0, 4.26) is set to start for Lansing.

Monday is a Qdoba Q*Monday. Purchase a lunch entrée at either Appleton Qdoba location tomorrow and you will receive a free ticket that may be redeemed at any Monday home game for the rest of the 2014 regular season.

If you can't make it out to the game, there are several ways to catch the Timber Rattlers action. MyNEW 32's Sports Showdown will have the game on television starting with the pregame show at 6:00pm. The radio call may be caught on AM1280, WNAM or IHeart Radio beginning with that pregame show at 6:15pm. The game is also available to subscribers of MiLB.tv.

ATTN: 1,360

Wisconsin Boxscore

Zach Quintana wasn't as sharp as he was in his first outing. As you read in the game story above Tyler Linehan didn't fare all that well either.

The good news is that offense kept piling on runs all game and a team that was supposed to get by on small ball played a different game for at least a day. Clint Coulter came close to doing something no T-Rat has ever done, no Rattler has hit 3 HRs in a game in the team's 20 year existence. Besides the 2 homer performance from Coulter the only other multi-hit game was from Francisco Castillo but the T-Rats drew 8 walks as a team during the game.

Wisconsin Recap

There were only 4 1-2-3 half innings in the game, a very busy game log if you are so inclined.

Orr and Fiers Guide Sounds To 5-3 Win

Nashville Infielder Goes 3-For-4; Fiers Picks Up Win with Quality Start

Nashville Sounds

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The Nashville Sounds picked up a 5-3 win over the Omaha Storm Chasers Sunday at Greer Stadium, highlighted by Pete Orr's three-hit, three-RBI day and a dominant start from pitcher Mike Fiers (2-0).

Orr began his stellar 3-for-4 outing with an RBI double into left field in the second inning. The double-bagger scored Sean Halton, 1-for-3, who drove a triple over Omaha's centerfielder Brett Eibner to lead off the frame.

In the fourth inning, Orr singled to centerfield to help Nashville load the bases for outfielder Jeremy Hermida, who shot a double up the first base line to score two and make it a 3-0 game.

The 34-year-old saved his biggest blast for the fifth inning: a two-run homer to the Twice Daily Fan Zone beyond right field. The shot was Orr's first of the year and gave Nashville the five-run advantage.

Orr's chance for the cycle came in the seventh, but the veteran hit a grounder to second baseman Jimmy Paredes for the out. Orr is 4-for-10 in the series with a home run, triple, double, and four RBI.

Defensively, Fiers kept the Storm Chasers off the board, scattering five hits across 6 2/3 innings of work to pick up his second win and quality start of the year. He improved his season ERA to 0.71 (1er/12ip), while fanning five Chasers and walking one. The outing gives Fiers a career ERA of 0.41 (1er/22ip) against Omaha.

Omaha started a rally in the eighth inning, leading off with three consecutive singles against Sounds reliever Michael Blazek. With runners on the corners and one out, Blazek surrendered an RBI double to first baseman Matt Fields to end his night. Alfredo Figaro stepped in with a pair of inherited runners and allowed one to score on Paulo Orlando's single.

Closer Donovan Hand entered in the ninth inning to earn his second save in as many nights.

The Storm Chasers starter P.J. Walters (0-1) was charged with the loss, allowing Nashville five runs on nine hits over 4 2/3 innings.

The Sounds will look to win the four-game series against the Omaha Storm Chasers (AAA-Royals) Monday night at 7:05 p.m. Nashville sends RHP Johnny Hellweg (1-1, 4.35) to the hill opposite the Chasers RHP Aaron Brooks (0-0, 27.00). Sounds broadcaster Jeff Hem has the call on 102.5-FM "The GAME".

Nashville Boxscore

Sean Halton's double was the only prospect accomplishment worth noting here, Hunter Morris sat this one out. Donovan Hand hasn't walked anyone yet this year covering 4 appearances and 5.2 innings pitched.

Final: Pensacola 7, @Huntsville 5

STARS RALLY COMES UP SHORT

Huntsville, AL - The Huntsville Stars rallied late Sunday at “The Joe” but still came up short, falling in game five of their series with the Pensacola Blue Wahoos 7-5. The Stars still took three out of five in the series against the Cincinnati Reds Double-A Affiliate.

The Stars were trailing 7-2 going into the ninth. Jason Rogers started the inning by doubling off the left field wall against Blue Wahoo reliever Sean Black. Mitch Haniger followed with a two-run homer to left field for his third homer of the season. It was also the third straight game that Haniger homered in.

The Stars kept chipping away at the deficit. Shawn Zarraga singled for his second hit of the day. Two batters later pinch hitter Shea Vucinich lined an RBI double down the left field line making it 7-5. The Stars chased Black out of the game after he allowed three runs on four hits.

Fabian Williamson entered and got Hainley Statia to ground out to third. With the tying runner at the plate, Josh Prince struck out to end the game.

Pensacola hit a team record four home runs, three against Huntsville starter Tyler Cravy (1-1). Donald Lutz hit a two-run homer and solo home run against Cravy. Juan Silverio also hit a two-run homer against the Stars starter. Silverio’s home run in the second put the Blue Wahoos up for good.

Yorman Rodriguez hit the fourth and final home run for Pensacola in the ninth against Casey Medlen.

The Blue Wahoos got an excellent start from Michael Lorenzen (2-0). The right-hander tossed 6.2 innings allowing four hits, while striking out four and allowing two earned runs. The Stars’ Nick Ramirez homered against him in the seventh.

The Stars will travel to Pearl, Mississippi Monday night for the beginning of a five game series against the Mississippi Braves, the Double-A affiliate of the Atlanta Braves. RHP Brooks Hal l(0-1, 5.62) will start for Huntsville. Aaron Northcraft (0-0, 0.00) will go for Mississippi. The game can be heard starting at 6:45 PM with Steve Jarnicki on 92.9 FM, 1450 AM WTKI and online at www.wtkiradio.com.

Huntsville Box Score

RHP Tyler Cravy's first AA start wasn't strong, but he should bounce back. Cravy gave up exactly one home run in 79.1 innings while at Brevard in 2013. He surrendered three in a four-inning span here. RHP Eric Marzec should be noted for two innings of scoreless middle relief.

Free 25-year-old switch-hitting catcher Shawn Zarraga! Dude is 8-for-13 with three walks and no K's in his customary part-time role (1.262 OPS). The hefty (6'0", 248) Zarraga should draw interest as a minor league free agent next fall if the Brewers don't bring him back for an 8th season in the system.

Huntsville Game Log

Impressive, but down 7-2 entering the 9th, not enough --

Huntsville Bottom of the 9th

Pitching Change: Sean Black replaces Mikey O'Brien, batting 9th.

Jason Rogers doubles (3) on a fly ball to left fielder Donald Lutz.

Mitch Haniger homers (3) on a fly ball to left field. Jason Rogers scores.

Shea Vucinich doubles (1) on a ground ball to left fielder Donald Lutz. Brock Kjeldgaard scores.

Pitching Change: Fabian Williamson replaces Sean Black, batting 9th.

Coulter goes on power trip for Rattlers

By Tyler Maun / MiLB.com

Clint Coulter's mid-April power surge began with a simple concept -- take it easy.

Coulter bashed two home runs a day after hammering a grand slam as Class A Wisconsin broke a late tie to slip past South Bend, 11-7, at Four Winds Field on Sunday.

The Brewers' No. 12 prospect is applying lessons learned from instructor Sandy Guerrero, now the hitting coach at Double-A Huntsville, and Milwaukee Minor League hitting coordinator Jeremy Reed as he begins to round into form for the Timber Rattlers.

"Sandy's always saying 'suave,' meaning 'easy,' and Jeremy's always saying 'easy power, let it come easy,'" Coulter said. "Me being a strong guy and an aggressive guy, I want to go get the ball, and that's kind of counterintuitive to what hitting is about. You've got to let it come to you, so I've just been working on staying back and letting it come to me and let my power actually work, which I think is what's been happening lately."

Wisconsin raced out to a 5-0 lead in their rubber game at South Bend, with Coulter accounting for four of his team's first five tallies. The 2012 first-round pick got started with a leadoff home run in the second and belted a three-run shot in the third -- marking his second straight four-RBI game. Saturday night, Coulter's grand slam helped propel the Timber Rattlers to a 6-4 win.

"It comes in waves," Coulter said of his recent power streak. "The pitcher's got to throw home runs. Hitters don't necessarily hit them. I've gotten some good pitches and haven't missed them. I think in the past, I've gotten pitches like that, but I've missed them or mis-hit them at least. I've been putting good swings on them and maybe gotten a little bit of luck too."

After the Silver Hawks rallied to knot the finale, 7-7, the Timber Rattlers scored four times in the top of the eighth to secure the series victory. All but one Wisconsin lineup member had at least one hit on the day with Coulter and Francisco Castillo recording two apiece.

"We've been really threatening teams and scaring them but not really getting the ducks in or around the pond," Coulter said, noting that Wisconsin left 10 men on base in Friday night's 4-3 loss. "I think once we get rolling with the bats, which hopefully that was a good start today, our pitching's been solid, so I think we're going to get it rolling."

This season is a repeat for Coulter who spent 33 games in the Midwest League a year ago. He batted .207 with 31 strikeouts in 116 at-bats.

"I feel like last year I was trying to turn things around so quick and trying to do a 180 when it's a process," he said. "You can't really control it or everyone would be hitting .300 or hitting home runs all the time. You've just got to trust your approach and trust your discipline at the plate, and good things will happen."

Tyler Linehan (1-1) allowed three runs in two innings of relief, but picked up the win.

South Bend's Ben Eckels (0-2) suffered the loss by surrendering five runs on three hits over 2 2/3 innings.
