While Brent Suter and Jorge Lopez make their debuts at AA and High-A, respectively, this is Ariel Pena's Nashville debut, but not AAA debut. Pena made one four-inning start for Salt Lake City (Angels) in 2011.

From Steve Jarnicki with the Stars:

LENGTHY TRIP TO HUNTSVILLE: After tonight’s game in Jacksonville, the Stars will travel to Huntsville on a 9 hour and 11 minute bus ride. The 541 miles traveled and 9 hour and 11 minute bus ride is the longest the Stars will endure this season. The rest of the road trips are all under 5 hours and 45 minutes.

Tyrone Taylor could make me a very happy man, I love what he's done in the first week. Now to just keep up a high a level of production for the entire season and we have something special.

Final: Brevard County 5, Daytona 4

Taylor leads Manatees over Cubs

The Manatees improved their record to 3-1 with a 5-4 victory over the Daytona Cubs on Monday night.

The start of the ‘Tees game was delayed by 35 minutes due to a quick downpour that hit prior to game time, but center fielder Tyrone Taylor got things going immediately, pulling the first pitch he saw down the third base line for a double.

Taylor would be stranded at second base, but it was the start of a big night for the young outfielder.

After falling behind 3-0 in the second inning, Brevard answered right back with a pair of runs in the third. Taylor picked up his second double of the night, and moved to third on Orlando Arcia’s groundout. Cameron Garfield and Victor Roache followed with back-to-back doubles and the Sea Cows pulled to within 3-2.

Daytona put up another run in their half of the third, but Brevard quickly tied things up in the fourth. Designated hitter Jose Sermo reached with a one out single, and Brandon Macias worked a walk. Taylor came through again, picking up his third double in as many at bats, and knocking in Sermo and Macias.

The Manatees got a break in the fifth, when Cubs shortstop Marco Hernandez lost Jose Sermo’s two-out pop-up in the lights, allowing Roache - who had singled to lead off the inning – to score the go-ahead run.

Jacob Barnes came on in relief of starter Jorge Lopez and worked three scoreless innings, retiring all nine Daytona batters he faced. Tanner Poppe came on to pitch the ninth, and worked around a one-out triple to earn his second save of the season.

Brevard County starts a six game road trip on Tuesday as they travel to Lakeland at 6:30 pm EST. Hobbs Johnson will get the start for the Manatees.

Brevard County Box Score

Tyrone Taylor’s three doubles give him a FSL-leading five on the season. He also knocked in a pair of runs and cut down Dan Vogelbach trying to score from second base with nobody out in the second inning. Cameron Garfield and Victor Roache each had multi-hit games as well, with each picking up a double. Garfield gunned down one of two runners who attempted to steal on him, but did have a throwing error as well when he threw down to second on ball four and the ball went in to the outfield. Michael Reed singled, drew a walk, was hit by a pitch, had a sacrifice bunt and stole two bases.

Jorge Lopez was dancing around trouble most of the night, but allowed just two earned runs in his five innings. He struck out four and walked two. Jacob Barnes was the unsung hero of this one, working three perfect innings. It was a little surprising to see Tanner Poppe closing for the Manatees. I assumed that role was Tommy Toledo’s, but this was Poppe’s second save. He made it interesting again, but got the job done.

"No FSL teams broadcast on milb tv."

For what it's worth...this winter I asked Dave Walkovic about streaming 'Tees games, and he said, copied from email:

"As far as your request goes, we are in the process of getting live streaming video of Manatees games. We just started to put this in the works this past offseason, so getting anything finalized this season is highly unlikely. It is a long process, much longer than one, myself included, could imagine. With our radio program truly launching last season, it was maybe a little overzealous of us to try to launch video streaming as well, but we are trying anyways."

One more reason to hope the club solves their issues and stays latched to the Crew.

Sounds Drop Series Opener In Iowa, 4-1

Velez Homers For Lone Nashville Run

Nashville Sounds

DES MOINES, Iowa - The Nashville Sounds were on the short end of a 4-1 defeat at the hands of the Iowa Cubs on Monday evening at Principal Park in the opener of a four-game series.

The loss was Nashville's third in a row after opening the season with consecutive wins.

Eugenio Velez (2-for-4) continued his strong start to the season for the Sounds, swatting a one-out solo homer off I-Cubs starter Tsuyoshi Wada in the second inning to spot the visitors a 1-0 lead. Velez has hit safely in each of his four contests (7-for-13, .538) after concluding the 2013 campaign with a 22-game hitting streak.

Right-hander Ariel Pena got off to a good start in his Nashville debut, holding Iowa hitless through the first four innings before the I-Cubs broke through in the home half of the fifth. Brett Jackson legged out a triple to right before knotting the contest at 1-1 when he trotted home on Eli Whiteside's ensuing RBI single up the middle.

Pena took a no-decision in his Sounds debut after striking out eight batters while holding Iowa to one run on a pair of hits in five innings of work. The right-hander threw 77 pitches on the night.

Iowa took a 4-1 lead in the sixth when third baseman Christian Villanueva slugged a three-run homer to right off Sounds reliever Kyle Heckathorn (0-1), who was added to the club's roster earlier in the day. The right-hander retired the first two batters of the frame before allowing a two-out single and issuing a walk prior to giving up Villanueva's first longball of the year.

Wada (1-0) earned a win with a quality start for Iowa, limiting the Sounds to one run on three hits while fanning eight in his 6 1/3 innings of action.

Following the Velez homer, Nashville put only one run into scoring position until the ninth, when the Sounds mounted a two-out rally against Blake Parker.

With two down in the top of the ninth, Velez singled to right and moved to third on a double by Hunter Morris (2-for-4) to bring the potential tying run to the plate in the person of pinch-hitter Jeremy Hermida. However, Parker fanned the veteran slugger on four pitches to quell the threat and nail down his first save of the year.

The teams continue the series with another 6:35 p.m. matchup on Tuesday evening. Right-hander Mike Fiers will man the bump for the Sounds to make his season debut. Iowa will counter with left-hander Chris Rusin (0-1, 12.27).

Nashville Boxscore

I'm completely torn between how happy I am with Aerial Pena's start to the season and how much I despise losing to the Cubs at any level. Of Pena's 77 pitches mentioned in the story above 46 of them were for strikes. If it wasn't for Aerial walking and allowing a triple to Brett Jackson it would have been a completely dominant outing. With so many non prospects on this roster I'm struggling to find anything to talk about most nights that isn't covered in the game story.

Nashville Recap

I would have liked to see Pena come out for the 6th, he was probably on an 85 pitch count though, this was the ballgame.

Iowa Bottom of the 6th

  • Defensive switch from center field to right field for Elian Herrera.
Pitching Change: Kyle Heckathorn replaces Ariel Pena, batting 3rd, replacing right fielder Caleb Gindl.
Kevin Mattison remains in the game as the center fielder.
    Arismendy Alcantara strikes out swinging.
Javier Baez lines out to third baseman Irving Falu.
Matt Szczur singles on a ground ball to third baseman Irving Falu. Matt Szczur advances to 3rd, on a throwing error by third baseman Irving Falu.
    Chris Coghlan walks.
With Christian Villanueva batting, Chris Coghlan steals (1) 2nd base.
Christian Villanueva homers (1) on a fly ball to left field. Matt Szczur scores. Chris Coghlan scores.
Brett Jackson singles on a ground ball to second baseman Eugenio Velez.
With Eli Whiteside batting, Brett Jackson steals (1) 2nd base.
Eli Whiteside flies out to center fielder Kevin Mattison.

Final, Huntsville 8, @Jacksonville 2

SUTER LEADS STARS TO FOURTH STRAIGHT WIN

Jacksonville,FL - Huntsville Stars lefty Brent Suter (1-0) pitched five effective innings leading the Stars, the Double-A affiliate of the Milwaukee Brewers past the Jacksonville Suns, the Double-A affiliate of the Miami Marlins 8-2. With the win, the Stars (4-1) won their fourth straight game and sent the Suns (1-4) to their fourth straight defeat. The Stars also took four out of five from Jacksonville in the season opening series.

Suter, who was making his Double-A debut, worked five innings allowing just two hits on one run. He also struck out three.

The Stars offense backed Suter with plenty of offensive support early and often. In the first inning, D’Vontrey Richardson led off with an infield single against Suns starter Jose Urena (0-1). Richardson then stole second base and advanced to third on a throwing error by catcher J.T. Realmuto. Nick Ramirez scored Richardson on a sacrifice fly.

The Stars pulled away in the second. They sent nine batters to the plate scoring five times. Nick Shaw made it 2-0 on his RBI single. Richardson then followed two batters later, by hitting a laser down the left field line scoring a pair of runs. Ramirez also added a two run single in the five run second.

Kentrail Davis and Shawn Zarraga also added RBI’s in the fifth inning.

Richardson and Ramirez each contributed two RBI’s for the victories Stars who outhit Jacksonville 10-3. Davis also had his fourth multiple hit game of the young season.

The only run Suter allowed was in the fifth when opposing pitcher Robert Morrey lined a single into center. The Suns scored only once more which came against Stars reliever Casey Medlen in the sixth. Joe Benson hit his first home run of the season which made it 8-2.

The Stars will travel back to Huntsville, Alabama and have an off day Tuesday. Wednesday will be the home opener for the Stars as they host the Pensacola Blue Wahoos (Double-A Affiliate of the Cincinnati Reds). RHP Carlos Contreras (1-0, 0.00) will start for Pensacola while RHP Brooks Hall (0-1, 4.50) will start for Huntsville. The game can be heard starting at 6:15 PM with Steve Jarnicki on 92.9 FM, 1450 AM WTKI and online at www.wtkiradio.com.

Huntsville Box Score

The Marlins' AA staff includes some heralded arms, and the Stars have had their way with them the past four games. There were four doubles among the ten Huntsville base knocks. Greg Hopkins singled, walked twice, and added a sacrifice fly. Kentrail Davis is laying waste to nearly every pitch that comes his way. Great to see D'Vontrey Richardson off to a fine AA start. Go Harvard! Brent Suter's never going to light up a radar gun, but the former 31st round southpaw gives us a nice change of pace to follow every five days.

Huntsville Game Log

Manatees pick up 3rd one-run win over Daytona Cubs

By Sean Kernan, Daytona News-Journal

DAYTONA BEACH — It’s been seven years since the Brevard County Manatees won the season series against the Daytona Cubs and held the I-95 Trophy.

But the Milwaukee Brewers’ affiliate has a 3-1 lead over the Cubs after taking a 5-4 victory Monday night at Radiology Associates Field at Jackie Robinson Ballpark.

It was the Manatees’ third one-run win over the Cubs, who have struggled to hit and score in those losses.

Monday night, before a crowd of 1,807 that waited out a 36-minute rain delay, Daytona’s bats were quiet with the exception of a three-run second inning.

“We let (Brevard County starter Jorge) Lopez off the hook,” Cubs manager Dave Keller said. “We had a chance to score more runs.”

Tim Saunders and Pin-Chieh Chen, the Cubs’ leadoff and No. 2 hitters, respectively, went a combined 0 for 7 with five strikeouts.

Lopez (1-0) worked out of jams in the third and fourth innings, and when the Cubs (1-3) did score the Manatees (3-1) answered right back.

“We scored, and they scored,” Keller said. “We scored again, and they scored again. You have to be able to hold guys after you score.”

The Cubs jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the second on four hits, including a two-run double to right field by Rock Shoulders.

Daytona added an unearned run in the third as Albert Almora worked his way around the bases after a one-out single.

But the Manatees scored twice in the third and fourth innings, knocking four doubles against Daytona starter Rob Zastryzny. Cameron Garfield and Victor Roache each had RBI doubles in the third, which began with a Tyrone Taylor two-bagger.

Taylor also doubled in the fourth, driving in two runs.

The Manatees scored an unearned run in the fifth to break a 4-4 tie before Lopez and relievers Jacob Barnes and Tanner Poppe combined for five scoreless innings. They retired all but one of the last 17 Cubs batters.

Brevard County’s Orlando Arcia attempts to turn a double play after getting the out on Daytona’s Rock Shoulders.

Huntsville overpowers Suns' pitchers again

by Jeff Elliott, Jacksonville.com

A year ago, the Jacksonville Suns took four out of five games in two different series with the Huntsville Stars.

The Stars got a measure of revenge by earning a fourth consecutive win with an 8-2 victory Monday night to close out their season-opening, series dominance of the Suns at the Baseball Grounds.

After posting a 3-1 win in Thursday’s season opener, Jacksonville’s pitching and hitting were no match for the Stars.

Suns manager Andy Barkett had labeled the team’s starting rotation as “maybe the best in all of minor league baseball.” But against the Stars, the Suns didn’t even have the best rotation in the series.

Anthony DeSclafani held Huntsville to one run and two hits over six innings in the opener, but the Suns’ other four starters were roughed up. They combined to allowed 29 hits and 15 earned runs in 17 2/3 innings.

Statistics don’t lie and in this case, they show the domination of Huntsville in the last four games of the series:

*The Stars outhit the Suns 39-17 and outscored them 23-6.

*Huntsville batters struck out 16 times, the Suns 26.

*The Stars had 14 extra-base hits, the Suns 5.

*As a team, Jacksonville hit .157 (17-for 108), Huntsville was at .305 (39-of-128).

*Huntsville never trailed in the final four games.

The strong showing in the first series was satisfying to Huntsville manager Carlos Subero.

“We came here and had a very good series against good pitching,” Subero said. “But our pitching was very good too. You always want to win a series, and taking this fourth game on the road like this, that’s very meaningful to our guys.

“One of our strengths is our hitting. We have some guys who are polished hitters for this league. That’s important for the new guys coming up from High-A ball who are feeding off their success at the plate.”

The latest one-sided loss included a five-run second inning by the Stars that stretched their lead to 6-0. Leading the Huntsville attack again was Kentrail Davis. Davis now leads the Southern League with a .533 average (8-for-15).

His latest effort against the Suns included a single, double, one run scored and one run batted in.

The early success has exceeded the type of start the 25-year-old left-handed hitting outfielder had hoped for.

“This is more than I expected. I didn’t play that well in spring training so this is nice,” Davis said.

Brevard edges Daytona, 5-4

Taylor hits three doubles, as bullpen holds Cubs scoreless

By Andrew Luftglass / Brevard County Manatees

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - The Brevard County Manatees won their third one-run game against Daytona Cubs on Monday night, thanks largely to a pair of right-handed relievers. Jacob Barnes and Tanner Poppe held the Cubs scoreless over the game's final four innings, giving the Manatees a 5-4 win at Radiology Associates Field at Jackie Robinson Ballpark.

Barnes pitched three perfect innings in relief of 'Tees (3-1) starter Jorge Lopez. The righty recorded three strikeouts over his three innings and bridged the gap to Poppe for the ninth.

Poppe got into some trouble when Cubs (1-3) third baseman Jeimer Candelario drilled a one-out triple off the right field wall. With the tying run on third base, the Manatees were forced to pull the infield in, but their closer worked out of the jam. Poppe induced a weak pop-up to second baseman Orlando Arcia and struck out Cubs left fielder Rock Shoulders to nail down the save and give Brevard County the series win.

Lopez earned the victory in his first start of 2014. He allowed four runs - two earned - in five innings of work. The right-hander also struck out four Cubs and walked two in the winning effort.

While the pitching was strong at the back end for Brevard County, the Manatees had to battle back from the start. The 'Tees trailed 3-0 heading into the top of the third, but pieced together a rally with three doubles in four at-bats.

Tyrone Taylor led off the frame with a two-bagger. Two batters later, Cameron Garfield doubled him home and Victor Roache followed suit with a run-scoring double of his own to pull the Manatees within one run.

The Cubs added a run in the bottom half of the third to lead 4-2, but Brevard responded. With runners on first and second, Taylor pulled a hard ground ball down the left field line. Jose Sermo scored from second and Brandon Macias came all the way around from first to tie the score at 4-4.

That score remained unchanged until the top of the fifth inning. The Manatees had Roache on second and Yadiel Rivera on first with two outs and Sermo coming to the plate. The switch-hitting designated hitter hit a high pop up to shortstop that looked like it would end the inning. Daytona shortstop Marco Hernandez camped under the ball, but appeared to lose track of it in the lights. The ball fell in shallow center field, allowing Roache to score what would eventually be the winning run.

Cubs' relief pitcher Yao-Lin Wang was the tough-luck loser as he was on the mound when the error allowed the 'Tees to take the lead. That fifth inning was Wang's only frame of the game and he allowed just the one unearned run on one hit.

Taylor, who delivered the game-tying hit for the 'Tees, was also the team's largest offensive contributor. Brevard County's center fielder hit three doubles as part of a 3-for-5 night that included two RBI and a run scored.

The Manatees will remain on the road over the next six days. They begin the road trip with a three-game series against the Lakeland Flying Tigers (3-1) on Tuesday night. Left-hander Hobbs Johnson is the probable starter for the 'Tees and RHP Yorfrank Lopez is scheduled to pitch for Lakeland. First pitch will be at 6:30 p.m.
