2014 NL Central Minor League Roster Analysis (Subscriber only)

Milwaukee Brewers

TEAM TO WATCH: Tough to choose between Double-A Huntsville, which features nine top 30 prospects, and high Class A Brevard County, which has eight, but we’ll give the edge to Brevard since it’ll have three of Milwaukee’s top four position players. The outfield should be fun to watch with Tyrone Taylor (2) in center and power-hitting Victor Roache (5) on a corner. They’re joined in the lineup by a middle-infield tandem of Orlando Arcia (7) and Yadiel Rivera (12). RHP Tyler Wagner (16) highlights the pitching staff, which also features LHP Jed Bradley (18)—the 2011 first-rounder back for another tour of the FSL—and RHPs Damien Magnifico (23) and Jorge Lopez (24).

SHORT END OF THE STICK: Triple-A Nashville has the fewest top 30 prospects with just four, but three of them are top-10 guys, so we’ll instead go with low Class A Wisconsin here. The Timber Rattlers do have six top-30 players but just two of them are in the top 20, led by C Clint Coulter (11), the Brewers’ 2012 first-rounder who got 33 games of experience with Wisconsin last year before being sent down. A couple of 2013 collegiate draftees highlight the rotation in RHPs Taylor Williams (19) and Barrett Astin (22).

WHO’S MISSING: It’s surprising not to see 3B/1B Nick Delmonico (12) on a full-season roster, but the Brewers have chosen to keep him in extended spring training to get more work. Less surprisingly, the same goes for 2013 high school picks RHP Devin Williams (9) and 3B/SS Tucker Neuhaus (14).

edit. Forgot to note it was a subscriber piece thanks MH, quoted the relevant portion above now.

Absolutely amazing that SS Orlando Arcia is the youngest player in the Florida State League despite missing a full year of development in 2012 (broken ankle).

You'll also see Rule 5 LHP Wei-Chung Wang and top prospect OF TyroneTaylor within the chart in for their respective leagues.

As JJ Cooper points out, Wang, despite having not pitched above the Gulf Coast League, is older than Bryce Harper and Marlins righthander Jose Fernandez.

Final: Huntsville 5, @Jacksonville 3

Stars Earn First Win of Season

Jacksonville, FL - The Huntsville Stars, the Double-A affiliate of the Milwaukee Brewers, broke a 3-3 tie in the ninth inning scoring two runs to beat the Jacksonville Suns, the Double-A affiliate of the Miami Marlins, 5-3 Friday night at Bragan Field. It was the Stars (1-1) first win of the season.

Greg Hopkins and Jason Rogers each produced RBI’s in the ninth and David Goforth pitched a 1-2-3 ninth notching his first save of the season.

Rogers gave the Stars a 1-0 lead on a solo home run to right field in the second. The Suns’ Ryan Fisher then tied the game with a solo home run of his own in the bottom of the second.

The Stars retook the lead in the fourth when Nick Ramirez produced one of his three hits. He singled home Rogers to give Huntsville a 2-1 lead. Suns’second baseman Danny Black tied the game in the fourth on a sacrifice fly.

In the sixth inning, Kentrail Davis reached on a fielding error by shortstop Austin Nola which allowed Ramirez to score and give the Stars a 3-2 lead. In the bottom of the eighth though with two outs, Brady Shoemaker homered to center off Stars reliever Casey Medlen tying it up at 3-3.

The Stars bounced right back to give them their fourth lead of the game when Hopkins reached on a fielders choice scoring Shawn Zarraga. Zarraga started the rally by singling. Rogers followed with an RBI double providing the Stars a key insurance run.

The Stars had fourteen hits. Ramirez and Rogers led the attack with three hits apiece. Davis and D’Vontrey Richardson also had a multiple hit game.

The Stars and Suns will play game three of their series Saturday night. RHP Taylor Jungmann (0-0,0.00) will start for the Stars. RHP Anjel Sanchez (0-0, 0-0) will go to the mound for the Stars. The game can be heard starting at 5:50 PM with Steve Jarnicki on 92.9 FM and 1450 AM WTKI and online at http://www.wtkiradio.com.

Huntsville Box Score

Congrats on the first win, again listened to Steve for the vast majority of this one, but definitely while multi-tasking, so didn't take specific notes.

Most of RHP Drew Gagnon's 16 starts in Huntsville last year weren't exactly pretty, so his five-inning line (3 H, 2 R, 1 HR, 2 BB, 3 K) was a nice kickoff to 2014. LHP Brent Leach is 31 and last saw big league action in 2009, but along with 29-year-old Nashville LHP Brad Mills, they are the only southpaw relievers at AA / AAA. David Goforth doesn't have the build (5'10", 205) nor the strikeout pedigree (95 in 126 pro innings) of a typical closer, but the Brewers would love to see a Brandon Kintzler-like trajectory from him.

Nice hit parade here (3 - Nick Ramirez, Jason Rogers, 2 - D'Vontrey Richardson, Kentrail Davis), with Rogers pushing an opposite field jack, oh, and two doubles for good measure. Yeah, eight total bases works most nights.

Love that D'Vontrey's middle name is D'Wayne, by the way.

25-year-old Shawn Zarraga is in his 7th season with the Crew (his walk year). His second year with the Stars after three in Brevard, would be nice if health and opportunity met this year, but Zarraga (pinch-hit single here) doesn't seem to be in the everyday lineup plans, at least to begin 2014.

First AA hit for Greg Hopkins, Mitch Haniger (now 0-for-7 thus far) will get his Saturday.

Sounds Start Strong With 4-2 Win

Gomez Goes Deep in Triple-A Debut; Velez 2-For-3 with Two Runs

Nashville Sounds

(MIKE STRASINGER)

PAPILLION, Neb. - The Nashville Sounds secured a season-opening win Friday night at Werner Park, highlighted by a three-run home run from shortstop Hector Gomez, to defeat the Omaha Storm Chasers by a score of 4-2.

Gomez entered the game as the only Sounds player without Triple-A experience, but did not waste any time to contribute: adding to the Sounds 1-0 lead in the fourth inning with a deep drive over the left-field wall to claim Nashville's first home run of the season. The shot scored Caleb Gindl, who singled with two outs, and Eugenio Velez to give Nashville the 4-0 advantage.

The Sounds first run came in the third inning when Velez, 2-for-3, moved around the bases on Omaha pitcher Chris Dwyer's miscues. Velez singled to reach base, moved to third on Dwyer's pickoff error, and scored on a wild pitch.

Right-handed pitcher Johnny Hellweg (1-0) led the Sounds defensively, turning in 5 1/3 innings of work from the hill to pick up the win. The reigning Pacific Coast League Pitcher of the Year allowed two earned runs on six hits in the contest, fanned four Chasers and walked two.

Reliever Donovan Hand entered in the sixth for Hellweg with one out and Omaha's Jimmy Paredes on third. Hand induced his first batter, Brian Fletcher, into a grounder that third baseman Irving Falu fielded and threw to catcher Robinzon Diaz to eliminate the scoring threat.

Hand completed the sixth and remained in the game for a scoreless seventh inning to finish with two strikeouts and one hit over 1 2/3 innings pitched. Michael Blazek made his Sounds debut in the home half of the eighth inning and limited Omaha to just one hit before closer Rob Wooten worked a 1-2-3 ninth inning to notch the save.

On top of the solid pitching, the Sounds defense turned three double-plays in the game.

Dwyer (0-1) was charged with the loss after allowing Nashville four runs on four hits, two walks, one error, and a pair of wild pitches.

The Sounds had the bases loaded with one out in the third inning, but the Storm Chasers kept Nashville to one run in the frame as Diaz grounded into a 5-2-3 double-play.

Velez's single in the third extends his Sounds hit streak to 23 games, which began last season on August 12, and his on-base streak to 37 games. He finished the night with two of the team's six hits.

The Sounds play games two and three of the series as part of a doubleheader beginning at 2:05 p.m. Throwing for the Sounds will be Brewers top prospect RHP Jimmy Nelson opposite Omaha's RHP Aaron Brooks, while lefty Brad Mills gets the nod for Nashville in the nightcap against LHP John Lamb. Both games will be seven-inning contests and will be broadcast on 102.5-FM The GAME.

Nashville Box Score

Not much noteworthy on the prospect front, the trio of relievers I talked about when rosters were announced pitched well, but that was to be expected. All told Donovan Hand, Michael Blazek, and Rob Wooten combined for 3.2 IP, 0R, 2H, 1BB, and 4SO. Johnny Hellweg's final line is about what we'd expect 5.1 IP, 6H, 2R, 2ER, 2BB, 4SO, and 1HBP while throwing 48 of 82 pitches (58.54%) for strikes. He posted his usual 7-0 GO-FO as well for those of you whom care about such things.

Nashville Recap

The team did a nice job picking up Hellweg in the 6th.

Omaha Bottom of the 6th

  • Christian Colon hit by pitch.
With Johnny Giavotella batting, throwing error by Johnny Hellweg on the pickoff attempt, Christian Colon to 2nd.
With Johnny Giavotella batting, Christian Colon steals (1) 3rd base.
Johnny Giavotella grounds out, third baseman Irving Falu to first baseman Hunter Morris. Christian Colon scores.
Jimmy Paredes triples (1) on a fly ball to right fielder Caleb Gindl.
Pitching Change: Donovan Hand replaces Johnny Hellweg.
Brian Fletcher reaches on a fielder's choice out, third baseman Irving Falu to catcher Robinzon Diaz. Jimmy Paredes out at home.
With Matt Fields batting, Brian Fletcher caught stealing 2nd base, catcher Robinzon Diaz to second baseman Elian Herrera.

Final: Brevard County 4, Daytona 3 (10 innings)

Cooper's big hit propels Brevard to tenth inning win

By Justin Rocke / Brevard County Manatees04/05/2014 12:37 AM ET

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - Despite blowing an early three run lead, the Brevard County Manatees battled to a 4-3, ten inning victory over the Daytona Cubs in their first road game of the 2014 season Radiology Associates Field at Jackie Robinson Ballpark.

After striking out in his first four at-bats, Manatees first baseman Garrett Cooper came through with the go-ahead RBI single to center to put Brevard County (2-0 overall, 2-0 first half) up for good in the top half of the tenth inning.

The Manatees struck early picking up a 1-0 lead three pitches into the game. Center fielder Tyrone Taylor led off the game with an infield single to short and was quickly driven home. Second baseman Orlando Arcia ripped the first pitch he saw from Cubs starter Jose Rosario down the left field line for an RBI double.

After back-to-back walks to catcher Cameron Garfield and left fielder Victor Roache, with one out shortstop Yadiel Rivera hit a sacrifice fly to left to stretch Brevard County's lead to two.

The Manatees' offense stayed hot by tacking on another run in the top half of the second inning.

Third baseman Brandon Macias got the rally going by smacking a one-out double over the head of Daytona center fielder Albert Almora. Arcia picked up his second RBI of the night by lacing a triple down the right field line to score Macias and give Brevard County a 3-0 advantage.

After retiring the first six batters of the game, Daytona (0-2, 0-2) finally got to Manatees starter Damien Magnifico in the bottom of the third.

Designated hitter Bijan Rademacher doubled to deep center to lead off the inning and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by shortstop Marco Hernandez. Right fielder Pin-Chieh Chen then pushed across the Cubs first run of the season by driving in Rademacher with a line drive double to right to cut the lead to 3-1.

After back-to-back scoreless innings in the fourth and fifth, Daytona rallied again in the sixth.

After a lead-off walk to second baseman Gioskar Amaya and a single by Chen, center fielder Albert Almora hit a hard grounder to second that Arcia couldn't handle. The error brought home the Cubs second run and cut the lead to one.

Magnifico proceeded to walk the next batter and after first baseman Dan Vogelbach popped out to the catcher, left fielder Rock Shoulders scored Chen from third by grounding into a fielder's choice to second.

The hard throwing right hander's night ended there. Despite the no-decision, Magnifico had arguably his best start with the Manatees, allowing just three hits and one earned run over 5.2 innings.

Manager Joe Ayrault brought in right-hander Jacob Barnes to end the threat, but it was Garfield who quelled the rally.

After a first pitch strike, the California native made a snap throw over to first to pick off Shoulders and end the inning.

After Cooper's go-ahead base hit, Ayrault went to reliever Tanner Poppe. The right-hander closed the door on the Cubs by getting top prospect Almora to groundout with the tying and go-ahead runs on base.

The Manatees will host the Cubs again on Saturday night as they play the third game of this four-game opening series. Brevard County will turn to left-hander Jed Bradley against Daytona's right-hander Tayler Scott. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 PM (5:35 Central) at Space Coast Stadium in Viera.

Brevard County Box Score

Garrett Cooper’s clutch base hit in the tenth came after he had struck out in each of his four previous plate appearances. Orlando Arcia went 2-for-5 on the night with a double and a triple and two RBI. His error sounded more like bad luck based on the radio call. They said it took a bad hop off the dirt. Interesting that he was at second base again tonight. Yadiel Rivera and Brandon Macias each doubled for the Manatees, while Cooper, Tyrone Taylor, Michael Reed and Cameron Garfield each added one hit. Victor Roache walked three times and struck out twice in five plate appearances. Reed stole a pair of bases including a big steal of second in the tenth inning to set the game winning run. Garfield did a great job of cutting down the Daytona running game, catching Rock Shoulders too far off first base and then gunning down Bijan Rademacher in the tenth inning as he was trying to steal second and get in to scoring position.

Damien Magnifico pitched pretty well, giving up just one earned run over 5.2 innings. He allowed just three hits and kept the ball on the ground, inducing 14 ground ball outs. He did strike out just one, but as Manatees play-by-play man Dave Walkovic noted, Magnifico was sitting between 94-96 even in to the sixth inning. Jacob Barnes was fantastic in his 2.1 innings of work, allowing just one hit. Michael Strong worked a clean ninth to earn the win, and Tanner Poppe picked up the save. Poppe allowed three hits in his one inning of action, but was helped out big time by Garfield throwing out Rademacher.

Daytona Cubs fall 4-3 in 10 to Brevard County in home opener

By Sean Kernan, Daytona News-Journal

DAYTONA BEACH -- On a picture-perfect night before more than 5,000 fans at their home opener, the Daytona Cubs came up a run short in a 4-3, 10-inning loss to Brevard County.

It was the second straight night the Cubs lost to their Florida State League rival by one run.

The Cubs managed just seven hits, three by Pin-Chieh Chen and two by Bijan Rademacher, in the loss before a sellout crowd of 5,092 on Friday night at Radiology Associates Field at Jackie Robinson Ballpark.

“Their pitching has been good two nights in a row, but at the same time we put ourselves in position to score some runs,” Cubs manager Dave Keller said. “When we've needed some people to have good at-bats and a good approach, they haven't done it.”

The Manatees (2-0) scored their game-winning run on an RBI single by Garrett Cooper, who had struck out four times before delivering in his fifth at-bat.

“I never had four strikeouts before, not in high school or my whole college career, but that's baseball, and I was just hoping for another chance to get a big hit,” Cooper said.

It was the first FSL game for the Cubs at the Jack since the addition of an entry gate, concourse, covered picnic area, restrooms and concessions, concluding a $1.3 million project. The game was a sellout before the Cubs came to bat in the first inning.

“We had to turn people away,” said Daytona Cubs franchise owner Andy Rayburn. “There's well over 5,000 actual (attendance). The fans keep on coming out, and the improvements for the fans paid off. There were no complaints, and everybody was happy, but nobody was happier to see this than me.”

Brevard County jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first as Daytona starting pitcher Jose Rosario allowed two hits and two walks to the first four batters he faced.

Rosario gave up three runs on five hits, three of them for extra bases, in just three innings.

The Cubs, coming off a 1-0 loss to the Manatees in the season opener on Thursday night in Viera, struggled for hits against Brevard County starter Damien Magnifico. The right-hander boasts the best fastball in the Milwaukee Brewers' farm system, according to Baseball America, and he was between 94 and 97 mph in the sixth inning.

But the Cubs got their first run of the season in the third inning. Rademacher belted a leadoff double to center and Chen pulled a two-out double down the right-field line.

Daytona tied the game at 3 with two runs against Magnifico, who was the victim of a costly error by second baseman Orlando Arcia that allowed a run to score. Chen was the only Cub to get a hit in that rally, which included two walks and a fielder's choice by Rock Shoulders.

The Cubs had two runners on base when Manatees catcher Cameron Garfield picked off Shoulders at first base to end the sixth.
