Minor League Transactions -- 2014 Regular Season

Via the Manatees --

IF Garrett Cooper has been placed on the disabled list, retroactive to May 22nd.

RHP Mark Williams has been transferred from Wisconsin to Brevard County.

***

.620 OPS in his 102 High-A AB's for Cooper, it's been a tough go of things.

Williams was very successful in 13 2013 relief appearances with Brevard, which prompted a mid-year bump to Huntsville last year. He is working his way back from a major ACL injury.

Some Irving Falu tidbits -- Welcome to Miller Park today!

Falu has one minor league option left - he was optioned in 2012 and 2013 by Kansas City.

He "cried like a baby" upon his first big league callup in 2012

Big league OPS of .793 (95 plate appearances)

Teammate of Martin Maldonado on Puerto Rico winter league and World Baseball Classic squads

Tripled in first big league at-bat

Switch-hitter (now two on the roster -- Elian Herrera)

Via Jeff Hem, Voice of the Sounds -- Falu hit safely in 25 of last 28g (.327). Played 12g at 2B, 17 at 3B, 14 at SS.

He and his agent were watching Jeff Bianchi box scores very carefully these past few weeks (OK, well, his agent probably was...)

Via @BrewersPD:

LHP Jed Bradley is promoted to Huntsville after 46 games (all starts) with Brevard. Long road, but congrats!

Soon-to-be 22-year-old LHP Clint Terry (18th round, Lee University), who posted video-game type numbers in Maryvale last summer, gets to jump Helena and has been promoted to Wisconsin.

Also --

RHP's Tyler Spurlin and Zach Quintana, and C/1B Paul Eshleman all off the DL with Wisconsin. Lance Roenicke to the DL, 1B David Denson transferred to AZL Brewers

Not sure why Denson would not be placed on the Timber Rattlers DL (hamate bone fracture in wrist, out 5-6 weeks), but this accomplishes the same thing -- frees up a Wisconsin roster spot, and Denson will assuredly be making rehab at-bat's in Maryvale during their summer season in July.

Jed Bradley debut with Huntsville Stars in holding pattern

by Mark McCarter, Huntsville Times

Jed Bradley's Huntsville Stars debut will be delayed indefinitely.

The former Huntsville High pitcher was penciled in as the starter in Friday's game against the Tennessee Smokies. However, Bradley has been placed on the temporarily inactive list and pitcher Eric Marzec has been reassigned to Huntsville from the Class AAA Nashville Sounds.

Bradley, 5-2 in 10 starts at Brevard County, fell victim to a flu epidemic that raged through the Manatees' clubhouse and it was deemed in his best interest to let him fully recover and not accelerate the process. His return is still to be determined.

Bradley will become only the second Huntsville-born player to play for the Stars, joining Hunter Morris (2011-12), the former Grissom High star, with that distinction. Considering the Grissom-Huntsville rivalry, there is some bit of symmetry to all that.

RHP Greg Holle has been placed on the disabled list, retroactive to 5/27.

RHP Scott Lieser has been transferred from Arizona to Brevard County.

RHP Jose De La Torre has activated from the disabled list at Nashville and been transferred to Brevard County.

***

No word yet on the nature or severity of Holle's injury.

The undrafted 24-year-old Lieser and his magnificent leg kick jumps all the way from Maryvale to Brevard - he posted solid numbers in 11 relief appearances last summer (as he should have as a 23-year-old). Nice opportunity for him here.

De La Torre, dropped from the 40-man roster this spring, injured his shoulder in a baseline collision just two batters into his 2014 Nashville regular season. He begins his road back in the Brevard sunshine.

Starting Huntsville RHP Jacob Barnes has pitched as many as six innings (last start 5/24), so not sure why he exited after three scoreless here, but Barnes did ground out to end the 3rd.

We'll learn more soon, but Barnes lands on Huntsville's disabled list today.

LHP Jed Bradley comes off the Temporary Inactive List. If indeed the "list" was used for illness reasons, and not something like bereavement, that's the first time I can remember such a maneuver.

If Bradley slots into Barnes' rotation spot, he'll make his Stars debut on Tuesday at Jackson (TN) - Mariners.

Mehring also said during tonight's broadcast that Bradley was still suffering the ill effects of that flu bug which went around the BC clubhouse last week.

The Brewers signed a former Rockies farmhand, catcher Franmy Pena, and assigned him to the DSL Brewers squad. Pena turns 22 next week.

Pena, a Dominican native and a switch-hitter, spent his age 18 and 19 seasons in the DSL, and after four games in the 2012 DSL, was promoted to Grand Junction of the Pioneer League (struggled in 45 plate appearances).

Pena was released by Colorado in spring training 2013 and did not play last season.

Pena has seen time in corner spots, particularly very early in his career, but is listed as a catcher by the Crew.

and Pena did net a baseball card:

I don't recall Juan Ortiz or Yunior Santana being mentioned as those coming stateside from the DSL, but neither appears on the DSL roster either. Any news on either of those guys?

Always amazes me that folks pick up on items like this, makes me feel better about being so specific on even the seemingly most minor of moves.

About an hour before you posted that, I moved the two outfielders, along with IF Daniel Leonardo, to the Maryvale portion of our Player Index, after noticing the same.

You are correct that the players were not listed as those who were in Maryvale this spring and would begin the 2014 season stateside. They are listed on neither roster right now, yet none show in released status (a release for any of the three would be surprising).

So they will most likely be listed on the Maryvale roster by MiLB.com once the Maryvale season begins, if not sooner in the coming days.

Keep on keeping me on my toes!

This was posted back on March 14th --

In earlier posts (including this one, please review) we had mentioned the previously announced eight Brewers signings from last summer's international signing period, several of which could be considered fairly high profile.

The Brewers have announced four additional signings within their DSL roster page:

Juan Diaz (09/24/1992), 21 years old), a 6'0", 185 lb. RHP from the Dominican Republic

Carlos Luna (09/25/1996, 17 years old), a 6'1", 175 lb. RHP out of Panama

Ken Paredes (01/11/1997, 17 years old), a 6'3", 185 lb. RHP from the Dominican Republic

Dilson Fernandez (05/09/1994, 19 years old, 20 in May), a 5'11", 185 lb. catcher from the Dominican Republic

So for now, the final tally for Dominican Summer League rookies to debut in 2014 will be four RHP's, two catchers, four infielders, and two outfielders.

Earlier this spring, each player had been added to the online MiLB.com DSL roster page.

All are there now except for Ken Paredes.

We'll drop a note to Brewers Player Development, it's possible the Paredes signing had to be voided, we'll see...

As one might have surmised, it's a "tight hamstring" for Barnes (via Steve Jarnicki's notes from Huntsville).

The Brewers have confirmed for us the following --

The offseason signing of Ken Paredes (01/11/1997, 17 years old), a 6'3", 185 lb. RHP from the Dominican Republic, was voided by MLB (failed investigation, no further details, i.e name/age, etc.).

Also, the Brewers have signed former Marlins farmhand RHP Junior Rincon, a 22-year-old Dominican native. Rincon (career stats) debuted in the Dominican Summer League in 2011, missed all of 2012 with an injury (we're working on determining the nature), and then split time stateside in the Gulf Coast Florida Rookie and New York-Penn Leagues in 2013 before his release by Miami this past January. Rincon is in Maryvale now and barring a late-spring release, will make his Brewer debut with Maryvale or Helena.

OF Jose Sermo has been placed on the disabled list.

OF Michael Reed has been activated from the disabled list. Reed will be active for Brevard County's game tonight in Port Charlotte against the Charlotte Stone Crabs.

***

Unlikely that Sermo is hurt (likely a taxi squad thing), but we can never quite say that for certain.

Great to have Reed's .291/.470/.427 line back in action.

Major league followers know that Elian Herrera has been optioned to Nashville, with Aramis Ramirez' return to the big league club. The Sounds will need to make a corresponding move when he arrives and is formally activated.

***

From the Manatees:

RHP Jose De La Torre transferred from Brevard County to Huntsville.

INF Garrett Cooper activated from the disabled list.

Huntsville will need to make a move to free up a spot, that likely won't happen until after today's matinee game.

Reliever RHP Arcenio Leon bumped up to Nashville.

The 27-year-old Leon is in his in 10th pro season. Prior to this promotion, he had only appeared at AAA once before, for one game in 2011, in the Astros' system. He has spent time on the 40-man rosters of both the Houston and Milwaukee organizations, and has one option remaining should he earn his way back on at some point.

Minor league veteran Johnnie Lowe has been placed on the Nashville DL to get the roster down to 25.

Also, infielder Hainley Statia has been swapped down to Huntsville from the Sounds.

Looks like the Stars need to make a move to create room for Statia.

The Timber Rattlers will need to make another move upon Cooper's arrival, it appears.

,631 OPS disappointing for Cooper in his Brevard stint.
