Minor League Transactions -- 2014 Regular Season

Brewer Fanatic Staff

The nine-year run of Brock Kjeldgaard (career stats) in the Brewers organization has come to an end, as he was activated from Huntsville's DL on Saturday and subsequently released.

While we don't know this to be the case, it wouldn't be a surprise if Kjeldgaard asked for his release to take his power toolset on the open market, as his playing time was very limited in his 2014 role.

A member of the Brewers' 40-man roster for most of the 2012 season (outrighted July 30th), this article from last February was the most recent feature story on the long-time farmhand.

Good luck to Brock in the future.

Kjeldgaard signed quickly with the Lancaster (PA) Barnstormers of the independent Atlantic League (same team that RHP Cody Scarpetta now toils for).

(Thanks to the Voice of the Stars, Steve Jarnicki, for the heads-up...)

Disabled list swap at Nashville for weak performing catchers -- this via the Sounds' media notes.

DIAZ ACTIVATED, MAY PLACED ON D.L.: The Nashville catching corps had a couple of roster moves today as Robinzon Diaz was activated from the disabled list after missing nine games. Lucas May took his spot on the Sounds’ D.L.

Nashville RHP Alfredo Figaro to the DL (no word on the reason, but as a 40-man roster member, we'll ask Tom H. to inquire).

RHP Eric Marzec gets a chance at AAA once again after a super-brief stay earlier, up from Huntsville.

As noted in Monday's Link Report, it's a hamstring strain for Figaro.

RHP Zach Quintana placed on the Wisconsin DL retroactive to May 16

RHP Andy Moye reinstated from the Huntsville DL and transferred to Wisconsin

Moye has been out since April 7th with a hamstring injury. At age 26, this Timber Rattlers placement is a first stop back for the 4th year pro.

No word on Quintana's formal injurys status.

In-between games of Tuesday's Wisconsin doubleheader, 1B David Denson was activated from the DL after a nine-day absence.

C/1B Paul Eshleman returns to the DL in what is almost assuredly a taxi squad-type stint.

Just announced by @BrewersPD:

"Tanner Poppe has been transferred to Huntsville; Kevin Shackelford has been transferred to Brevard County. Andy Moye transferred to H'ville.

It's been quite the ascent for RHP Tanner Poppe, who turns 24 in July. Nice scouting, Brewers, as Poppe, who skipped Wisconsin this spring, was plucked in the 31st round of last June's draft. The 6'6" Poppe is doing exactly what players drafted at an advanced age need to do, kudos to him.

Hopefully 40-man roster RHP Kevin Shackelford can find a quick fix back down at Brevard.

You'd think RHP Andy Moye will take back his Huntsville rotation spot, with Jacob Barnes returning to a swingman role. Moye takes the 25th roster spot that was open when RHP Eric Marzec was called up to Nashville earlier this week.

The Brewers also announced the release of RHP Leonard Lorenzo. Lorenzo is just the latest of a long line of Dominican Summer League prospects who are brought stateside, show a bit of potential in Maryvale/Helena/Wisconsin, and then are let go prior to reaching High-A.

The only player signed and developed by the Brewers out of the Dominican Republic or Venezuela, position or pitcher, currently at AAA, AA, or High-A, is Brevard County middle infielder Orlando Arcia. That is totally unacceptable.

At Wisconsin now via the Dominican complex are IF Francisco Castillo, OF Jose Pena, and RHP Victor Diaz.

Mass, there may be a reason to disagree with that. It typically takes at least 4 years for an international signee to reach high-A, likely 5 years plus to reach AA-AAA. Going back that far, the bonus rules for international players were not in place, so in essence it was an open auction for talented players. Is it because teams with more resources (Yankees were/are notorious for making up for losing draft picks by overpaying for international players) overpaid for the talented players, leaving the Brewers with not much talent to choose from?

Yes, the Brewers should have taken at least half of what they spent on Suppan and Hammonds and invested that in international or draft-eligible scouting and talent, but that's water under the bridge. In 2008, when the Brewers would have had to sign those international players to be in the upper levels of the organization, the Brewers were prepping for their first playoff run in 27 years so they were investing in a young, talented ML team instead of trying to win auctions for unproven prospects against the Yankees, Red Sox, Dodgers, etc. The biggest mistake any under-resourced business can make is to try to compete on every level; the fact is that the Brewers have fewer resources than many teams, so they need to choose carefully which sources of talent (major league, draft-eligible, Latin America/Caribbean, Central America, South America, Far East, minor league free agents/trades) to invest in. They can't, and I'll argue shouldn't, compete in every one.

Not saying for sure that is the reason, but it may be. Now that the international rules are in place (except for Cuba and the Far East) it's more of a fair fight and we should expect more from international signees.

LouisEly, interesting observations about the international players.

I would say the problem goes beyond scouting and signing.

The skill level of the "prospects" that reach Helena is far below that of even the average Pioneer League player.

These players may have a "tool" but are far over matched in the rest of the game and are quickly left behind.

I really question the training and coaching they are receiving, almost all of these young men have come up thru Arizona and their respective countries academies. They need to be better prepared and skilled in basic fundamentals. And someone in the front office needs to be more realistic about the skills these players have.

But, maybe that is the way of the international program - sign a bunch of players for cheap, throw them into the fire and hope somebody makes it. Seems to me a waste of money and is a lousy way to treat these kids.

Michael Reed placed on DL, retro to 5/20. Jose Sermo activated from DL.

Any word on why Reed was put on the DL? Just curious.

Actually, than answers why Chris McFarland (ankle) landed on the DL, don't believe we have definitive word on Brevard's Michael Reed, although I'll have to re-listen to recent Manatee audio, thought for sure I heard something there.

I was at the TRats game when McFarland was hurt. He was is a straight backpedal and he and Arcia were both calling for it, last second Arcia dove out of the way but clipped Chris, who flipped over the back of him. At first I thought it was a head injury, looked like he whipped into the ground pretty good, but obviously he was rolled up. He stayed down for about 90 seconds but walked off on his own power, albeit with a noticeable limp.
