Minor League Transactions -- 2014 Regular Season

Mass Haas
And we had no one from the Timber Rattlers to come up? WOW, I just don't get it...please someone explain this one to me...Must be a maxed out innings thing or a friend of a friend looking for a one month job.

We're only talking 2-3 weeks left in the season, and the Timber Rattlers are fighting for their own playoff spot. I doubt anyone in Appleton sees this as a slight. Every organization needs to think outside the box once in a while, and while this is way outside the box, I think it's fun and interesting. Enjoy it for what it's worth. Taylor Williams got his call up, Anthony Banda was traded - heck, if anything, the more fringe players in the system should be thankful the Brewers hardly ever dip their toes in the independent league waters anymore.

We already used our one outside the box thinking for the year when we picked up Wang...Bring someone up from the Arizona League to get some innings since there is only 2 or 3 weeks left...On a lighter note...I'm available to throw a few innings at any level.

to take the spot of RHP Damien Magnifico, who heads to the disabled list with an undisclosed (as of now) injury.

Via Tom Haudricourt--

For those wondering about Brewers pitching prospect Damien Magnifico at Brevard, it was decided he had pitched enough this year.

Via Adam McCalvy --

The Brewers placed Kyle Heckathorn on the disabled list at Nashville and Damien Magnifico on the disabled list at advanced Class A Advanced Brevard County while both players deal with fatigue. Heckathorn could pitch again but the Brewers have decided to call it a season for Magnifico, 23, who had a 3.74 ERA in a career-high 120 1/3 innings.

"We don't want to push him over the edge," Ash said.

Another pitching prospect, right-hander Tyler Cravy, probably needs a "couple more weeks" of rehab for a serious left oblique injury, Ash said. That means Cravy, 25, probably won't pitch again this season. He is 8-1 with a 1.76 ERA in 15 games, 13 starts for the Stars and Sounds this season.

From Dustin in Helena --

RHP Brandon Moore was promoted this morning to the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers of the Midwest League. Moore won Pioneer League Pitcher of the Week honors in the last week of July continuing his solid play in the second half of the season. He is the only Helena Brewer this year to pick up a weekly League award.

No official word at this moment on if there will be a call up from the AZL to replace him.

Nashville Media Notes --

BUCKNER ADDED; HECKATHORN TO D.L.: Right-handed pitcher Billy Buckner (career stats) was signed by the Brewers today as a minor league free agent and was added to the Sounds roster. Buckner carried a 4-5 record with a 5.80 ERA in 15 appearances (14 starts) for El Paso this season and made his Padres’ debut and only start on May 24, where he took the loss after allowing three runs in 5.2 innings. The Sounds will be the 11-year-pro’s 6th PCL club (he also played for OMA in 2007, TUC in 2008, REN in 2009-10, CSP in 2011, and ELP in 2014). He fills the spot left by reliever Kyle Heckathorn, who was placed on the disabled list (retro to August 13) yesterday.

20-year-old Dominican native and corner infielder Sthervin Matos gets bumped again, this time taking his .859 Pioneer League OPS from Helena to Wisconsin (hopefully the flight arrangements went more smoothly than last time).

23-year-old 2014 5th rounder Dustin DeMuth makes the round trip back to Helena after struggling to a .593 OPS in 83 Wisconsin at-bats.

That's an extremely interesting promotion, I was looking forward to watching Matos in 2015. BTW, MiLB.com's new stat pages are just fantastic. I'm really curious to see Matos' defense at 3B, I'd like some context on his relatively high E totals. I don't mind Brennan playing both 3B and 1B as he progresses up the chain, I think that increases his versatility for a bench role which is his most likely outcome given his hit tool.

I really like Taylor Brennan but it would nice to have a 3B prospect with the potential to hit for AVE and some power.

You have Brennan and Denson who should be playing every day. I don't really see the need for a 3rd guy. Neda has been playing some first base and Coulter doing much of the DH work. There really aren't enough at bats. That's why I thought DeMuth should have been held back at Helena in the first place. He was struggling for regular at bats and Matos will get the same treatment. Yeah, DeMuth was overmatching the Pioneer league but if there isn't space there isn't space.

I think what this shows more than anything is that the brewers don't see Brennan having an MLB future... I know that's a jump, but why else, especially this late, start pushing guys to see if you have a 3B to move along with coulter, McFarland, Denson, Garcia exc. if you thought Brennan would be that guy, the brewers famously try to get their future MLBers playing together early so they can move them together. Just something to think about.

Matos would repeat A ball anyway, I still hope Coulter is the 3B to move with the WI group.

I would be all for that!! Based on his scouting report out of high school I don't think he would be relegated to 1B. He apparently has the athleticism and make up to play all four of the corners. I don't mind him not sticking behind the dish, but it leaves the system pretty barren at the position if he moves out.

My wife pointed out something about Demuth. Highly advanced metrics here, so I hope I don't lose you. "He looks nervous." I blew it off, but after wtaching him play a few games, I hate to admit I saw what she was talking about. He just didn't look confident at all. Not just at the plate, but between innings...just the way he carried himself.

I don't know what to make of that, other than an observation. Some guys do have a hard time adjusting to a new clubhouse that late in the year, maybe he'll be better off starting fresh in Appleton next year.

Via the Stars:

1B Hunter Morris was transferred from Double-A Huntsville to Triple-A Nashville. In seven games with the Stars, Morris batted .269 with zero homeruns and 2 RBI in 7 games. Morris had the walk-off RBI single in the 8th giving the Stars a 2-1 win on Tuesday. Morris hit safely in three straight games to finish his time with the Stars going 6-12 with 2 RBI. C/INF Joey Paciorek has been reinstated from the temporary inactive list.

Conveniently, the Sounds' final two series are against Ameican League teams (designated hitter), which will allow Morris and Matt Clark to co-exist.
