Newcomb finally had a bad game and gave up 4 earned runs, ending his scoreless streak. Nick Burdi was lighting up the radar gun, my goodness

College Draft Prospects Stat Roundup: Week 8

BA started doing these draft focus articles, kind of like a poor man's version of what PG has been doing for years. Good information regardless

Game Report: Ryder Ryan

HUNTERSVILLE, N.C.—Although Ryder Ryan was a two-way player on the summer showcase circuit, he has displayed significantly improved velocity early this spring, touching the mid-90s and generating buzz in the top three to four rounds. After impressing in a start on April 14 in front of more than 40 evaluators, Ryan’s stuff was similar to what it was on the showcase circuit in his April 22 outing, this time with no scouts in attendance.

This is the more in depth companion piece to the earlier article and is subscriber content. Very insightful if you have a BA subscription.

I don't like this at all for him as a pitcher, NC is another program who's not afraid to run up incredibly high pitch counts on their starting pitchers. However the draft is deep in pitching and if he performs he could get a much bigger payday down the road, but he might also be pushing back his first big MLB contract. Nola... yuck. I just don't see the upside in Finnegan, Fedde, or Nola that others do. To me they are all more higher floor players than they are high ceiling.

Interesting simply for the fact that it's the first mock that takes into account Hoffman's injury. They have him going at #11 to Toronto.

Luis Ortiz falls all the way to #30. Has anyone figured out what's happening with the guy?

Subscriber content. Cooper focuses on the downside of specialization, which is somewhat validating for anyone involved in HS sports fighting the specialization trend, it's not just a baseball thing.

2014 Draft Preview: Young Pitchers Bring Heat, But At What Cost?

May 12, 2014 by J.J. Cooper

Now many of the elite high school pitchers have focused solely on baseball for years. They often bounce around the country playing against top-level competition throughout the summer. They are involved in throwing programs, strength and flexibility programs designed specifically for pitchers and often have instruction from specialized pitching coaches from an early age.

As a result, pitchers are bigger, stronger and more advanced when they graduate high school. They are more advanced pitchers, though in many cases they have also lost some of the athleticism that pitchers of past eras developed when they were playing multiple sports.

“The training is as good as it’s ever been,” said Cubs pitching coordinator Derek Johnson, who previously coached and recruited at Vanderbilt. “Science is strong as far as getting guys to throw harder and faster, but at the same time, we are doing it with very young people who haven’t fully matured.

“You didn’t see the type of (body) frames back then you see now. It’s a lot more specialized. In some cases I see that as a bad thing (because) they are specializing so early. They have baseball muscles, but any movement out of a baseball movement, they’ve never accounted for.”
