2014 Bullpen arms (next step for DM)

I copied and pasted from mlb trade rumors the remaining free agent relief pitchers to hope to add to the conversation. If this is a no-no, please let me know.

With Marmol signing, I really hope K-Rod is brought back one more time. I'm not really enamored with this list, but then again, it's close to spring training and not much is typically available this time of the year.

Closers

Andrew Bailey (30)

Rafael Betancourt (39)

Kevin Gregg (36)

Joel Hanrahan (32)

Ryan Madson (33)

Right-Handed Relievers

Hector Ambriz (30)

Luis Ayala (36)

Mitchell Boggs (30)

Octavio Dotel (40)

Frank Francisco (34)

Brandon Lyon (34)

Cristhian Martinez (32)

Zach Miner (32)

Brett Myers (33)

Pat Neshek (33)

Francisco Rodriguez (32)

Josh Roenicke (31)

Left-Handed Relievers

Mike Gonzalez (36)

Oliver Perez (32)

Seems fine... I added a link to MLBTR just in case :)

Other than K-Rod, I would take a flier on Bailey or Hanrahan. That is about the extent of my list from what I see here.

The Mariners signed Francisco Rodney to a 2/$14MM (up to $15MM w/incentives) deal -- for comparison, the base AAV for Garza's deal is $12.5MM. So if the M's are lucky, they're going to pay $14-15MM for 130 innings. It seems like, for a small-market team like the Brewers, having homegrown bullpen talent is a way to save a LOT of money.

Jack Z is spendin' money like a man who knows he's on the hot seat. And wow, fun fact -- Rodney's ERA+ for 2012 (0.60 ERA) was 641. No, that's not a typo.

And STL signed Madison-born Pat Neshek to a MiLB deal. Seems like he would've been worth a shout from the Brewers.

If this team can keep Wang on as a Lefty along with Smith, could that make Gorzo tradebait? If I'm the GM, I'm strongly considering finding any takers interested in Gorzo. Especially if you can pair him with either Weeks or Juan Fran.

Do we know enough about Wang to be relying on him for an entire season though? I know that we have to use a spot on the 25 man for him if we want to keep him, but to trade one of the guys we may need to rely on seems a bit hasty to me. Just my opinion.

My thought with Gorzo kinda lies in 1. he's a lefty something teams are typically vying for and 2. he can spot start for teams. Injury bugs like Atlanta's could make that ability of Gorzo's valuable to a team. And 3. Just add Zach Duke who would only be a RP

The team I'm thinking of in this is Philly. And the player that could be excellent to acquire in this trade would be Darin Ruf. Maybe toss Juan Fran their way as a backup 1b/3b.(assuming they wouldn't want Reynolds)

Ruf has some power as well as decent BB rate. Not to mention a combo 1b/OF ability. Just a thought.

Yeah, I think if Duke can stay reasonably effective he basically can take Gorzelanny's role no problem. So I wouldn't really have an issue getting rid of Gorzelanny.

I wouldn't be up in arms or anything, but I'd much rather have Gorzelanny than Duke. We'd have to get a pretty nice complimentary piece this year in return.

Duke doesn't get nearly as many K's, Gorz has been much more reliable. In terms of WAR, I'm sure the difference would be negligible, but I like Gorzelanny quite a bit more than Duke.

Even vs lefties Duke isn't that good. Lefties OPS vs him over his career is about .750 and was about the same last year.

Gorzelanny has a .655 career OPS vs lefties, and last year it was .600.

In the k-rod signs for 3.5 million thread:

Considering what Neshek got from St. Louis, it does seem like an overpay. Still overall the bullpen in general is pretty economical. I really don't see them adding anyone else.

I don't see them adding a LOOGY. Duke was brought in to be insurance if Gorzelanny isn't ready to start the year. Gonzalez was a bad sign last year, so I hope they don't add someone just to add someone.

I think with the possibility now of using Thornburg in the pen, they have enough candidates.

Bump ... Good call TLB and JB ... Neshek was one of the best signings this past off season
