Cue the same people saying Braun should be banned from the game talking about how Pineda is such a gritty player just trying to get the 'W' for his team.

(And of course, doctoring the ball actually has a clear impact on the game, unlike PEDs. [sarcasm]Eagerly awaiting Pineda's 50-game suspension.[/sarcasm])

What was amazing was how utterly blatant it was, the Red Sox bench was just standing at the edge of the dugout in disbelief.

It was certainly blatant, especially coming off a start where everyone knew he had Pine Tar on his hand. Still, I was a little surprised the Red Sox actually complained about it considering the Red Sox pitchers received some accusations of doctoring the ball last year, and this is Jon Lester during last year's World Series.

Also, here is a good BP podcast with Dirk Hayhurst from earlier this week about pitchers doctoring the baseball. Hayhurst is the one who called out Clay Buchholz last year for doctoring the baseball with a substance on his forearm last year.

And here is Hayhurst's Major League Pitcher's Guide to Doctoring a Baseball as mentioned in the above podcast.

Not just “at Night” anymore.

I think most people are just calling Pineda an idiot.

I think that was pretty well acknowledged as the reason the Red Sox didn't say anything about the hand incident. They had to say something last night, and Farrell basically acknowledged they had to do it only because of how blatant it was.

What a surprise. Grand Inquisitor Buster Olney has a piece basically glorifying the use of pine tar and saying the rules need to be changed. The levels of hypocrisy are incredible.

Pine tar and PEDs are not the same thing. Pine tar actually has a dramatic effect on the game and gives the user a proven advantage, unlike PEDs.

Playing the devil's advocate Re: cheating. I understand there can be different levels of infractions/penelties (ie regular vs technical fouls in basketball or 5 to spot of ball foul for football) but if student A gets caught cheating by taking the time to make an elaborate cheat sheet and student B gets caught cheating by randomly looking and copying his neighbor's test, would they not receive the same penalty?

Most articles I have seen are "Well everyone is doing it Pineda was just to obvious about it" and are more or less letting him off the hook as a moron. Pine Tar and PED's are obviously not the same thing but they are both ways of cheating

Well apparently the unwritten rule in baseball is that using pine tar is OK as long as you are discreet about it but since Pineda was so blatant about it it rose the hackles of the keepers of the code.

How brutal is it to be a Diamondbacks fan so far this season? They're 8-22. They're about league average on runs scored, but runs allowed, nobody is even close. Only 3 teams have allowed more than 130 runs to this point: Diamondbacks 175, White Sox 145, Astros 135.

These numbers are slightly skewed because they've played at least 2 more games than everyone else, but they're still averaging 5.83 runs allowed per game. The White Sox are at 5.18 and Astros 5.0.
