Random MLB News & Discussion 2014

Thought I would start a 2014 Random MLB News & Discussion thread:

http://espn.go.com/boston/mlb/story/_/id/10345565/boston-red-sox-ceo-larry-lucchino-says-new-york-yankees-big-bucks-signings-help-rekindle-rivalry

Is anyone else put off by the Red Sox constant hand-wringing and whining over the Yankees and their spending? Don't the Red Sox do the same on some level? I have honestly gotten to dislike the Red Sox more than the Yankees because of this issue precisely.

It doesn't bother me one bit. The Yankees spend because they haven't been able to develop players for years. The Red Sox have been pretty good at developing their own players and then spending when they have holes to fix. They also know when to cut and move on like they did with the Crawford/Gonzalez/Beckett/etc. deal. The Yankees just spend and spend and don't know how to do anything else. A lot of the times it's successful and sometimes they have a team like they did last year.

Jeff Bianchi, even with his 2013 slash of .237/.272/.292, was still a 0.8 WAR player according to Fangraphs, and a 1.1 WAR player according to Baseball Reference. Baseball Reference had his D alone as 2.0 WAR. Interesting.

I like Bianchi. I know he hasn't hit well, but if he looks like a solid backup infielder. His glove has been pretty good (as WAR attests to), and if he can improve - even a little bit - he's a nice asset.

Former NBA All-Star Tracy MacGrady is attempting a pro baseball career as a pitcher.

http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2014/02/former-nba-star-mcgrady-eyeing-baseball-career.html

Seven-time NBA All-Star Tracy McGrady is aiming to pitch in professional baseball, FOX 26 reports. Still a relatively young 34, McGrady has been training with Diamondbacks pro scout Scipio Spinks and will look to catch on with the independent league Sugar Land Skeeters for the 2014 season.

Spinks says McGrady is currently throwing in the 85-86 MPH range, disputing earlier reports that the former NBA scoring champion had surpassed 90 MPH. However, he adds that McGrady's slider, which took him "five minutes" to learn, is a "true slider" with "good break on it." McGrady can also command the baseball to both sides of the plate with ease, he comments, and may reach the 90s with practice. "If the season starts tomorrow Tracy McGrady will be able to pitch on that Skeeters team," Spinks says. McGrady is training at Constellation Field, the Skeeters' home park.

Roger Clemens has also given instruction to McGrady, the Houston Chronicle's Jose de Jesus Ortiz reports. Clemens, currently a special assistant with the Astros, says McGrady "[isn't] there yet" and needs the opportunity to throw to live hitters.

I'm guessing many others saw this already, but Derek Jeter announced today that he'll retire after this season. What a career.

I was kinda hoping after his monster season two years ago that he might stick around, have a Molitor like finish to his career, maybe play until he was 43 or so and end up with 4,000 hits.

Not that 3500 or wherever he'll finish is anything to sneeze at.

I know people don't believe in "clutch," and I don't REALLY myself when it comes down to it, but Jeter was without a doubt a winner, and one of the all time great faces of a franchise. I even liked the guy and I, like most, hate the Yankees.

Ditto. I hate the Yankees, but I can't really say the same about Derek Jeter. He seemed like he was always happy and enjoying just playing baseball, despite being in the biggest market in the world and being paid huge sums of money (I guess that could make anyone happy...but it doesn't).

First ballot Hall of Famer, and deservedly so.

Some players seem to rise to the occasion at big moments while other wilt to the pressure. Jeter has always seemed to be a player that was a "hit it to me" type player. He always wanted to be in the action and seemed to excel in it.

Do you work for ESPN?

Derek Jeter is the most overrated player in the history of sports. There is going to be a lot of talk this summer about if he is the best shortstop of all time, which is rediculous. People will say either he's the 2nd best SS of all-time behind Honus Wagner, or use this type of arguement to say that his winning ability should put him #1. The thing I hate most about him is that he displaced the only player in history who is worthy to challenge Wagner for the top SS spot. The fact that ARod didnt have a full career as a SS, or at least until his mid 30s, is a crime against baseball history.

The only thing I like about Jeter is that he had the marbles to pick #2, even Mickey Mantle didnt want to be #6 and follow Babe, Lou and Joe D. He is the last single digit Yankee (they retired Billy's Martin's 1 so I assume they will do the same with Torre's 6).

Jeter's one of the best players of our generation. You don't get 3,000 hits by accident.

I think most people now realize that he was a below-average defender. But I'm a sucker for the jump throw and the flip play and "the dive". He was lucky to play for the Yankees, but he made the most of it.

Jeter's career slash line: 312/381/446. Postseason slash line:308/374/465. If every player had a season's worth of AB's in post season they too would most likely hit around their career average. He's a HOF'er who deserved MVP for his great season in 1999. I never liked him much, mostly because he was a Yankee, but he had a great career and represented his team and the sport in commendable fashion.

I once heard an interview with Orlando Cabrera where he hinted all those Jeter dives and jump-throw-and-flip plays were because the guy never bothered to position himself for the batter and the pitch. He stands in the same position every play, so plays that look routine by most ss who are paying attention to the game, take on a fantastic appearance by the bored on defense Yankee ss.

Some disappointing news, Japhet Amador will not be reporting to Astros camp. He will stay in Mexico to tend to family matters. I was really looking forward to seeing this guy play against major leaguers. I was even going to create an "Amador Watch" thread to track him through spring training.

For those who don't know him Amador is a 6'4", 300+ lb first basemen who played in Mexico until the Astros signed him towards the end of last season.
