Random thoughts that are pointless and too dumb to say anywhere else thread: 2014

JimH5
I heard a story on NPR today that a Law Enforcement Officer pulled over a school bus to hand his son his school lunch because he forgot it. The bus driver complained and the officer got fired. The host of the show was saying it was a nice gesture. I work with Officers and told one the story, who said matter-of-factly "Well yeah, of course he got fired."

I didn't realize you and the SO both worked in libraries. Go figure...learn something new every day.

Yup. We met in library school, which is as dorky as it sounds. :)

This is amazing!

I had no idea there was such thing as library school...

I'm baffled that people will bash Wal-Mart for undercutting mom and pop stores, and for it's predatory practices in general.....while they buy things from Amazon.com whose CEO has openly stated his intention to sell everything to everyone, without profit being a consideration.

There are certainly other reasons people hate Walmart, but what I think is funny is that the people that complain about Walmart putting the mom and pops out of business would never pay the prices that mom and pops charge anyway. There was a time when I wanted to be an altruistic consumer and tried to buy things from local stores until I realized how much money I could save by going elsewhere. And especially now with internet retailers, small local stores don't stand a chance.

I do believe in trying to shop at local places if there is service added to what they are selling. That can be worth a lot in my book! Especially when it comes to stuff I know nothing about. Where I used to live, there was a local hardware store that I would always try to go to. The type of place people went and hung out at. Their dogs would greet you at the door and the employees would help you with any project you might have. That's the type of place I would be loyal to. But just to go to a place because it's local, and you have to pay more, doesn't make sense. I do feel bad for the good places that have a hard time keeping up. One place I do my best to support is local restaurants. I'd rather pay a little more for quality food and service than save a few bucks for garbage. This however is harder in Suburbia!

My wife and I own a mom and pops place. Ironically Sams club is one of our customers. They actually have a policy to use local businesses. As RobDeer 45 noted many compensate for not being able to sell things as cheap by providing better service and experience. That is well worth it for some things, not so much others. I would never buy a major appliance at a box store for example. The service you get from the local guys are worth the extra money. TV's, on the other hand, are so disposable these days the extra service isn't worth it. I like going to restaurants that are locally owned. Also think mechanics and dentists are good places to go small and local.

The fun thing about mom and pops places is they seem to grow organically. My wife bought some balloons, a helium tank, a gorilla suit and a phone listing and started out of her dorm room in college. I joined later when I went to college and never left. The guy next to us started his grocery store because he couldn't find Korean food when he first came here. So he went to Chicago once a week and sold what he got to friends. It just sort of grew from there. Ditto for the hmong family down the street. Very few quit their job and start up a place. Which is ironic since the stereotypical dream is to get enough money to quit the rat race and start one up. They start up when they have nothing lose. That is not usually the case when you hit middle age and have a family and mortgage pay for or a lifestyle you wish to maintain. It's probably also why immigrants do so at so much higher a rate.

Sorry for being long winded. It's kind of an interest of mine for obvious reasons.

There needs to be a King Thames version of the bible.

My wife and I just went through the process of buying a couple major appliances. We went to Home Depot, Sears, and a local place. The local place had the same price as Home Depot (which was the lowest), but they threw in a few extras that Home Depot didn't...plus, we get our appliances a week earlier and we get their service should anything go wrong. We looked at a lot of other appliances while we were there and will most definitely go back next time we need to buy a big ticket item.

I would assume that "library school" is simply a colloquial way refer to the minor, major, master's, or doctorate in library science that would be obtainable at a college or university.

That’s the only thing Chicago’s good for: to tell people where Wisconsin is.

Rimshot for you, Baldkin. ;)

Most professional library jobs require a master's degree from an accredited program. "Library school" is a relatively old-school term, but people outside the profession can identify it readily, so that's what I go with personally. Some programs still use "library science" and I think that's goofy.

The official name of the department in which I earned my master's is the School of Library and Information Studies. Some universities are going with I-School, which to me sounds a little too much like something that will lead to cease-and-desist communication from Apple some day.

I can't speak for the kids nowadays, but UW-Madison's SLIS in the late 80s and early 90s was not at all devoid of the kind of parties many of us associate with college age people.

Remember: the Brewers never panic like you do.

Well done. And passed the test the first time you took it too. Impressive! Because, you know, I've heard some people have to take it twice.

I had to take it twice. I was told I didn't look at an uncontrolled intersection because I didn't violently turn my head from side to side, which was an automatic failure.

I didn't make that mistake twice.

I had to take it 3 times. First time I got an automatic DQ for pulling out in front of someone. Second time the lady had me so stressed out and uncomfortable that I made too many mistakes. The 3rd time I had a really nice guy who made the road test easy. Some of the DMV workers are just so unfriendly it can really intimidate a teenage driver into screwing up.
