What's bugging you? (2014)

Invader3K

I lost my weight with P90x and stuck with it because I can do it at home and around my schedule which can fluctuate daily based on work. I like the fact I'm not tied to into a rigid routine doing my workouts at a set time each day. That being said I definitely understand how that routine can work for people and I do have friends that swear by Crossfit, it's just not my thing, the only strict routine I've adopted is an eating schedule.

The Crossfit workouts are extremely challenging and there is a profound sense of satisfaction and accomplishment that comes from their completion, personally I'd rather read that someone completed a Crossfit workout than went out for pizza on a status update, but to each his own.

As for the injury issue, Crossfit isn't designed to be safe, it's based on plyometrics and olympic lifts, it's athletic training on a scaled down version to what we'd do with HS, College, and Professional athletes. Yes it's high impact, yes it's not for everyone, yes form is critical with olympic lifts or you can get hurt, but I think that anything which gives people a sense of accomplishment, hope, and better self image is good thing. Personally I've found that there's something therapeutic and cleansing that comes with working out, it rights my ship. I would guess from my personal experience and the friends who've tried to push me into Crossfit that the profound sense of accomplishment is what they find so exciting and want to share.

I completely understand if people can find that elsewhere in their lives but I just know what is working for me and the people around me.

TheCrew07 - No doubt! I think it's great for people. Like I said, if it makes them feel good, then I'm all for it. There just seems like there is a lot of justification for shirtless selfies that goes along with it, which normally is pegged as douchey. That's what I find funny.

That's my big problem with it. From what I've read and heard second hand, there's often not a lot of form instruction or correction at some of the Crossfit "boxes". People get "thrown into the fire" whether they're ready or not. Something can be challenging or even grueling, but still be safe.

That said, I'd rather see someone pushing themselves at Crossfit than peddling on a bike for 25 minutes at a leisurely pace while reading a magazine and thinking that's a real workout (assuming that's not all they can physically do).

I applied to a new teaching job in the town I live in. I fit the description perfectly...I taught the subjects they needed, teach in a diverse school, advise the club the teacher leaving advises.... Didn't get a call for an interview. My resume is awesome. How did I not get an interview?

They probably already knew the person they wanted to hire and the whole "interview" process was simply a formality they had to go through and they didn't want to waste your time.

Yeah, that seems to happen quite a bit. My wife went through similar experiences when she was still in education.

This is exactly what I have been thinking, but it's still mind boggling all at the same time. It sort of screwed with my psyche...it made me think that I wasn't good enough to be considered for the position. Oh well...life goes on.

Did they hire within the district? They have to post the job publically, but they do not have to give interviews to outsiders when they know they are going to hire a current teacher already on staff...

My son wanted a Gennett t-shirt and my wife purchased one from the Brewer team store at Miller park when she was there for a work function in May for a day game. However it wasn't a "Gennett" shirt it was a "Scooter" shirt. My son appreciated his mom's gesture, but was a bit dissapointed and I don't really blame him. He wanted a shirt that showed "Gennett" on the back..like his game Jersey shows. I wouldn't want a "Scooter" t-shirt either. So, I went to exchange the shirt yesterday for a "Gennett" shirt. I was told they don't sell "Gennett" shirts only "Scooter" shirts. When I mentioned that I thought that was odd since that is not what is on the back of his Jersey, they looked at me like I was crazy.

I bought my fiancee a Gennett t-shirt for Christmas online from the MLB store. You can get them there. Your situation is the opposite of mine though. I think she only likes Scooter because she likes saying his name. When we were in Nashville we went to a Sounds game and she got excited because one of the players was named Scooter. So she was, of course, very excited when he got called up. I was debating whether to get a shirt that said Scooter of Gennett on the back. I wasn't sure if she was even going to know who "Gennett" was. Well she did and loved it.

I think finding a workout and sticking to it is very admirable and I don't mind when people post results. But with Crossfitters there's a whole 'nother dimension. it's like they're trying to recruit people into their cult, er, workout.

Conversely, as mentioned above, the people that constantly post negative stuff about the workouts are equally as annoying. It's not the workouts that bug me it's the constant selling. Kinda reminds me of when my brother wanted me to switch long distance service.

Stupid things that slow traffic down...

-People "campaigning" on an overpass. Why does this cause people to slow down? Will never understand it.

- The signs that tell you your speed. People, you have one of these in your car, it's called a speedometer. Are you worried that there is a cop crouched down behind the sign that's going to run after your car? Do you really not know how fast you are going?

..and my newest one..

- water dripping from an overpass. Zoo interchange construction has an overpass that is dripping water. This, for some reason, brings east bound traffic on I94 to a halt in the morning. As soon as you get by the dripping water, traffic is moving again.

I didn't list accident on the other side of the free way because that's too obvious.

it bugs me when your interviewer starts out the interview by saying "Did you see the job at X that was posted today? You know, we had 250+ applicants, so you should feel proud you made it this far. And if not this one, you'll definitely find a position eventually." yeah, I really think I landed this job! cripes, i felt like a child being consoled by two adults and we hand't even started yet. i'm brand new to the system, but i'm also not exactly 18. although good side is this was my first interview in the State system (which they actually asked me. ugh) and every interview for every job runs exactly the same way. i thought i handled it really well and i don't think i'd change any answer i gave (which is of course rare in an interview), so i think it's more a matter of being on a good number of interviews. and, you know, landing one where they don't clearly have someone already chosen.

a few days ago i asked to sit down with the boss to run down what the interview process was like, and I found out in the interview that he basically gave me half the answers. one situation that I was surprised by was they set out three items in front of me and basically said "OK, pick one thing and tell us everything you know about it." One was a kind of squirrel I'd never seen before, one was artifacts of some sort, and one was fortunately a copperhead snake which I happen to know a lot about.

  • 2 weeks later...

Tonight's Channel 58 news displayed a map that placed Rochester, Minnesota in Iowa, just west of Dubuque. That reminds me of a Microsoft presentation a couple of years ago where they used a map that put Denver in the middle of Wyoming.

It also bugs me that "Dubuque" isn't in Firefox's spell checker.

That’s the only thing Chicago’s good for: to tell people where Wisconsin is.

The constant World Cup references on Google's homepage bugs me. I know I am predisposed to not like soccer, but you do not have to ram it down everyone's throat on a daily basis. I get it's seen as hip and the world's game, but stop. The tournament is weeks long and it is getting old.

Agreed. I can't wait for the US to be eliminated so people and the media can stop pretending to actually care about soccer.

Oh, I get it and I'm a complete curmudgeon. I hate the NFL period. Baseball is number one for me, college football is probably two and the NFL ranks something far, far distant.

I'm not a big soccer fan, but honestly, all the anti-soccer backlash is starting to come off as a bit nonsensical and self-serving. "I'm so sick of everyone talking about the most popular sport in the world! Look how cool I am, I don't even like soccer! It's so boring, what are those millions of people so excited about?" Not ripping on anyone here, but there's been a lot of that in the media and on Twitter lately and it's a bit tiresome and over the top. It's middle of summer, so it's not like there aren't other sports to watch if you don't like the World Cup.

Quoted for truth!

When my son was deep into club soccer, I was into the world cup, thought it was great and very exciting! Now that my son is no longer involved in soccer, I just haven't had the interest level, but for one summer, 2010 I believe, it was AWESOME!

I don't dislike soccer, in fact, it's a great sport, but since I didn't grow up playing, and the connection I had to the game through my son is gone, I can live without it. I have tuned in to random games here and there though...

I work overseas a lot and have been in other parts of the world during the World Cup. It is something that garners passion and I get that and it's cool. It is not my cup of tea though. My point originally was that Google advertises it every single day and it bugs me. I also did not see them doing that for the World Series fwiw.

Maybe Google believes there's enough intersection between their (global) users and the World Cup's audience to warrant the high profile coverage.

I can't even pretend to be a casual soccer fan myself. I'm not a hater, but I am by no means an enthusiast. All games have been shown at UW-Madison's Memorial Union, where we usually have lunch, so it's been on in our background as we eat.

What I do like about the World Cup (and I realize I'm off topic now since it doesn't really bug me) is seeing the rest of the world get so excited over something instead of just Americans. Every game that's been on at the Union during our lunches has a crowd, regardless of participating teams; and with UW having a decent sized contingent of international students, there seems to always be someone watching from a participating country, no matter what the country. UW-Madison has at least one student from every World Cup nation this year except Ivory Coast. (Link)

Can somebody please explain to me what the appeal is of the "fireworks" that just explode loudly in the air and make no visual spectacle at all? All they do is set off car alarms. Why does someone 4 blocks south of me get off on launching those things all night long?

I get that there are dozens of people within a mile or two of me launching off fireworks, but where are the police? Are fireworks now legal in Chicago?
