What's bugging you? (2014)

I'm working part-time at a college for a few weeks. On my fourth day there I find a piece of paper sticking under my windshield wiper. It's a warning notice from campus police because I "pulled through the parking spot." Does anyone know why they would forbid such a thing? It's a big, open air parking lot and the spaces all line up, they are not staggered. I can understand if it was small lot or a parking garage, but it's not. They have their parking rules on the back of the warning and pulling through was not mentioned. It looked like a good number of the cars around me had notices on them too (none of them pulled through), seems more like someone just felt like writing a lot of warnings.

I'm a little confused by what you mean by "pulled through". Do you mean that the front of your car was facing outward from the parking spot. If that's the case, how do they know that you didn't back in? Is the rule against the way your car is facing or the way you drove your car into the spot?

Edit: I'm guessing their issue is the direction the car is facing. The only two reasons I can come up with this rule is because A) While it's the law to have two plates on your car (one in back and one in front), some people only have one plate on their car and in most of these cases, the plate is on the back and B) It's easier to identify the make/model of a car from behind (because generally that is where the car companies place that information). These two items would be important if they ever had to report an issue with one of the cars parked in the lot.

If by chance their issue is with the actual act of "pulling through", the only thing I can think of is that it's a little dangerous because you may not notice someone that is trying to pull in forward from the other side.

In any case, the school should have a parking regulation webpage on their site that you might want to check out. And they probably don't need a reason to make the rule or enforce it.

At my daughter's college they prohibit pulling through or backing in but there the permit is affixed to the back driver's side window.

Learning how to drive, and had to finally deal with parallel parking. Read tons of guides on it and for some reason I was expecting to be a pro at it my first time. Couldn't be more wrong. Most of my attempts resulted in me being too far from the curb because I didn't get close enough to the car next me because I have awful awareness of the dimensions of the car, even after 12-14 hours of driving. I was able to do it flawlessly a few times but even then there was no car behind me, so it wasn't normal parallel parking. I typically enjoy driving but that was just stressful.

I think most new drivers struggle with this. I wouldn't worry about it. I'll never understand why they put any weight on this part of the driving test...especially in WI. I'm not sure where you live or what your parking situation is, but most people do not have to do a whole lot of parallel parking in Milwaukee or in WI in general. Even if you do, it's not something that is really that dangerous if you don't know how to do it....and if for some reason it is something that you end up having to do a lot, you will eventually become a pro at it. It's not some that any driver should be expected to be perfect at before they even have their license.

I can't remember the last time I paralleled parked.

I remember when I took my driving test, I did manage to pull off the parallel parking part of the test fine, even though I definitely wasn't great at it. Afterwards, the guy administering the test said, "You did OK, but you came close to hitting the car in front of you, and it was my car."

I remember thinking, "Wow, you're an idiot if you're having a 16 your old without a license try to parallel park behind your own car." Oh well, I still passed.

I have awful awareness of the dimensions of the car

Back in the olden days, drivers could actually see the trunk of the car. That made parallel parking a ton easier, even when considering the fact that vehicles were generally a lot larger than they are today.

I think I've parallel parked more this year than in the past ten years combined. You can still manage to find a lot of areas around Milwaukee that don't have much in the way of off-street parking. KK Avenue is an example.

That’s the only thing Chicago’s good for: to tell people where Wisconsin is.

When I got my new car, I took some cones out to an empty parking lot and practiced on my own, just to get an awareness of how far I could see (for both bumpers) and what size space I could fit into. It takes practice, like any other skill.

Actually, it's a skill you are born with. It's all geometry and angles. Just ask George Costanza:

If it makes you feel better, the policy years ago was to only parallel park when the "front" car was present. I think they probably learned the hard way about having test takers try and park in the way parallel would actually be used. I do it fairly often, but am still fairly uncomfortable doing it after 20 years of driving.

I have a plumber at my house. I was in the middle of asking questions when he made a phone call (vs. receiving one). He's been on the phone for over 10 minutes, and he's not talking about anything related to plumbing.

When these people come over, I like to ask my questions, then get out of the way and let them do their jobs. Now I don't remember what my questions were.

The increasing trend of news stories and social media posts devoted to parents demonstrating basic common sense parenting skills. I just saw one applauding a dad who publicly admonished his 10 year old for dressing like she was much older and lying about her age. Why does that have to be a news story?

It's news because he posted it on the internet. And I wouldn't say he admonished, he more or less humiliated her on social media.

Leaving for Vegas on Thursday. My wife and I have really been looking forward to this. Now...she's coming down with a cold, and my wife tends to get really bad colds that completely knock her on her butt for 7-10 days. If anyone has any uncommon advice (other than the usual fluids, rest, etc) that they can share, I think she's willing to give anything a try at this point.

Have her start taking Zicam right away. I know that helps me get over colds a lot quicker.

I've also been using a NeilMed sinus rinse every day for about the past month, and I find that it helps a lot with clearing up my sinuses. If she is all stuffed up, something like that can help. It's the thing where you mix a saline packet with water inside a bottle and then squirt it up your nose. Yeah, not the most pleasant thing, but I find it helps a lot. They're available at most pharmacies.

I used to use mine almost every night until that guy died from getting an infection from his. Haven't use it since.
