What's bugging you? (2014)

Invader3K
Monday is "Wear a Blue Shirt to signify that you're anti-bullying" day.

Aren't we being bullied into wearing a blue shirt? What if I don't want to wear a blue shirt? Can't I wear whatever I want and still be anti-bullying?

To those who came up with this idea, and especially those who are forcing it upon school kids, you can eat it.

If you design banner ads for the Internet, and build in a video clip that auto-plays - with sound - you deserve to have gruesome bodily harm inflicted upon your person.

(Especially when the ad finally loads up in a browser tab other than the one I'm actually looking at when the sound kicks in.)

I'm so burned out on hearing about "raising awareness" and various causes. I can't pretend to care anymore.

Then you have to click through every tab to find the right one. It's even worse when the ad is part way down the side of the page.

The inability for people (in my experience, women) to interact with another human being for more than 5 minutes without checking their cel phones.

I'm 35, and I'm single, and this is one of my biggest pet peeves about other humans. If I sat there on a first date and watched the Brewers game, well, that wouldn't go over well.... but somehow it's becoming socially acceptable for people to interact with their phones instead of the people around them.

Try having a teenage son or daughter sometime (especially one involved in a relationship). Five minutes would be an eternity for my son not to check his cell phone. This is probably the biggest ongoing battle in our house.

The inability for people to enter their vehicles without being hooked up to their phones in some way, either talking on the phone while driving, or texting while driving... They don't seem to care that they are a complete and total hazard on the roadway, they just don't care and it makes me extremely angry that I have to avoid them almost daily... When are people going to get a clue how bad this is for everyone around them.

Maybe killing someone because they were on their phone will wake them up, but even that I don't think will make a difference with people who can't stay off their phones for more than a couple minutes at a time.

It makes no sense, and it is quite sad that our society has accepted this behavior for so long... What is it going to take? Seriously, what?

People suck!

Amen turborickey. This topic has come up before and I have said this before, but I'll say it again. I live in Waukesha and work in Milwaukee. Many times I feel like I'm the only one on the road to and from work (mostly from work) that is not texting. Yes, the indicators are similar to drunk driving...usually they do not maintain a constant speed, drift in and out of their lane, and they leave way too much space between them and the car in front of them (until of course traffic comes to a stop and they notice at the last second and slam on their brakes). I have yet to come up with a good way to vent my frustration toward a driver in front of me (or in back of me) when I can see their face in the sideview or rearview mirror (theirs or mine) and their eyes are going up and down.

My hope is that it becomes as shameful as drunk driving. I believe MADD really helped curb drunk driving and the general public attitude towards drinking and driving. There needs to be some organized movement like that again, this time directed at texting and driving. I know efforts have been made, but I don't feel that they have been overly effective.

You're certainly not talking about Wisconsin are you, where DUI's are seen as a right of passage. And that bugs me.

I'm talking about now vs. the 70's or 80's - regardless of the state.

I wasn't born yet, so I don't know what it was like then, but that must have been horrible. It seems like people don't think of a DUI as a big thing in Wisconsin.

I don't think that is true, there is a stigma attached to drunk driving these days... It's a big thing all right, but it doesn't stop a LOT of people from doing it anyway.

I think in about the last 10 or 15 years, drunk driving has become much more stigmatized here in Wisconsin. I do remember the days when people would think nothing of getting behind the wheel after downing a six pack of beer or whatever, and I'm only 34 years old.

Texting and driving is a big problem. My wife and I seem to talk about it every time we are in the car. Everyone does it. When my wife and I first started dating (before people were really aware of the texting/driving issue) she told me she does not want me texting while driving. I kind of blew it off and then she told me that this was not just a request. She was very passionate about it. So I stopped and I'm glad I did. I'm at the point where I think I will start laying on the horn for 30 seconds until the person looks up and then give them a look. Hoping they will get it. Hopefully I don't get road raged off the road by the wrong person!

With drunk driving there is the stigma, but in my experience people's biggest concern with drunk driving is still getting caught. When in reality, if you do drive drunk then getting caught might be the single best outcome.

Regardless of the differences in penalties for getting caught driving drunk vs. getting caught texting and driving (difference is more significant in most states, but not necessarily in WI), people are more likely to want to try to keep the drunk driving violation a secret. You might say to someone at work, "Yeah, I got stopped last night for texting and driving", but you are probably not going to be as candid with others about a DUI situation (especially at work). This is what I mean about the differences in "stigma" or "shame" between the two acts. One act seems to speak more about your character as a person than the other, even though both acts are signs of negligent behavior.

One of my biggest pet peeves as well. What makes it even worse is most people don't excuse themselves from the conversation before they turn to their phone. You're jsut talking and all of a sudden notice they're not even paying attention to you anymore. So rude. The few times I check my phone while having a conversation, I say "I'm sorry, I just got a text I'm expecting from my son letting me know he's home." (As an example.)

I've come full circle on this. I used to find it necessary to constantly check for texts, emails, etc. I have learned not to let my phone dictate how I spend my time. All we can hope for is this will eventually come full circle, but I think it will take a while.

Wish I could say it's just a teen thing (I have one) but I swear adults are just as bad. And it's not just women either, it seems to be everyone. Quick story. Last weekend our family got together for dinner and my sister was constantly texting. My dad turned to her and said "Is our company not as interesting as your phone?" Zing!

I use chrome and theres a little sound icon on the tab which has sound coming from it. Makes it easy to see which is the problem tab.

Even better, they have the bookmarks bar at the top.

  • 2 weeks later...
I'm working part-time at a college for a few weeks. On my fourth day there I find a piece of paper sticking under my windshield wiper. It's a warning notice from campus police because I "pulled through the parking spot." Does anyone know why they would forbid such a thing? It's a big, open air parking lot and the spaces all line up, they are not staggered. I can understand if it was small lot or a parking garage, but it's not. They have their parking rules on the back of the warning and pulling through was not mentioned. It looked like a good number of the cars around me had notices on them too (none of them pulled through), seems more like someone just felt like writing a lot of warnings.
