TV treasures who are still with us (and some now sadly saying goodbye since this thread began)

RIP Mrs. Kotter...

That cast has suffered several losses, and none of them were that old...

One of my favorite shows of all time, now available on a boxed set dvd! You can only by season one separately, which is a bummer.

My favorite part of Welcome Back Kotter was during the short segments, either leading in to the show or at the end, when Gabe was telling a story/joke to Mrs. K. It was just the two of them in the apartment together. Obviously it was written and rehearsed and they were actors, but when Kaplan delivered the punchline, and she would laugh, it seemed very sweet and charming. As a teenager, that's how I imagined a great marriage would be.

Don Harron died today at age 90.

If his name isn't familiar, he was on Hee Haw as the KORN news reader, and basically rode that character, Charlie Farquharson, for his whole life. Not unlike the guy who played Foster Brooks or the guy who played Charlie Weaver.

I won't pretend that Hee Haw was great art, but it did deliver some country music greats...Hank Snow, Roy Acuff, Faron Young, Johnny Cash, Tennessee Ernie Ford, Stringbean, George Jones, Tammy Wynette, June Carter, Grandpa Jones, Buck Owens, Merle Haggard, Merle Travis, Chet Atkins, etc.

And if you catch it some nights on RFD TV, you might find episodes with Johnny Bench, Dizzy Dean or Mickey Mantle..

RIP, Don. You delivered pure, rural Canadian schtick.

Foster Brooks wasn't a character, that was his name. His shtick was portraying a drunk. Cliff Arquette portrayed Charlie Weaver.

I wonder if Hee Haw was inspired by Laugh In. The hillbilly couple with the woman with the blacked out tooth, Roni Stoneman, makes me laugh. Sometimes I'll have it on while I surf the net. When I use the jokes on the little woman she just shakes her head.

Eight Is Enough's Dick Van Patten, gone at 86.

One of the better comb-overs, even back in the day.

Eight Is Enough was right in our families' TV wheelhouse, Elizabeth was one of my several teenage TV crushes, but that's not the point, here.

The other "Dick Van", Van Dyke, still hanging in there at 89, although the trusted periodicals in my grocery store line indicate he may not be doing so well, understandably at that age. (Van Dyke did just guest-star on a recent episode of "The Middle", with 83-year-old brother Jerry.)

Getting back to people who are living, Norman Lloyd, 100, appears in this year's film, [cite]Trainwreck[/cite]. His film and television career goes back to 1939. Notable parts include several episodes of [cite]Alfred Hitchcock Presents[/cite], the role of Headmaster Nolan in [cite]Dead Poets Society[/cite], and the role of Dr. Daniel Auschlander for six years on the series [cite]St. Elsewhere[/cite].

That’s the only thing Chicago’s good for: to tell people where Wisconsin is.

Jack Larson, playwright and the actor who played Jimmy Olson on [cite]The Adventures of Superman[/cite], passed away at age 87 on September 20.

Still with us are Phyllis Coates (88) and Noel Neill (94), the two actors who played Lois Lane in the series.
