Eric Chavez?

Ok, he's 36, but he would seem to be a nice fit and he seems to have a little life left. A left handed bat that can play 3B spelling Ramirez and has also played a few games at 1B, and logically should be able to handle either position better than Francisco.

Besides, he's put up .800+ OPS the last couple years albeit in part time role. When he's not playing he's that veteran lefty bat off the bench that Melvin loves.

Really!

My guess is he signs for more than 3 million this year.

Here is the latest, no mention of the Brewers being in the hunt:

MLB.com's Jesse Sanchez says re-signing Eric Chavez has "become a priority" for the Diamondbacks.

But the veteran infielder is also drawing interest from several other clubs -- including the Rangers, Yankees, Marlins and Rays -- so it might take more than Arizona is willing to give. Chavez hit .281/.332/.478 with nine home runs and 44 RBI in 80 games this past season for the Diamondbacks. He turned 36 years old on December 7.

If this team was looking for bench depth because they hoped to contend for the playoffs I would say sure. But since there are not he would have no purpose on this team other than keeping young guys from seeing the field.

They hope to contend for the playoffs. Where have you seen anything from them to the contrary? Ramirez is good for 125 starts at 3B tops. Who would you rather have taking the other 35-40? Francisco who is terrible defensively wherever you put him and isn't the hitter Chavez is, or Taylor Green who hasn't played in over a year and at 27 is a stretch to be still called a "young guy"? Then there is this opening at 1B. True Chavez' experience there is limited, but this team tried numerous guys there last year who hadn't ever played there and who offensively weren't the hitter Chavez is. Chavez isn't long term but he could fill a platoon spot temporarily and buy a little time for Morris or even Rogers at AAA.

If they don't contend, Chavez will make a nice piece for a team that does. Same as Jim Edmonds did several years ago. Ultimately, Edmonds brought them Chris Dickerson, who in turn brought them Sergio Mitre, who in turn was sold for cash to Yankees.

Maybe I should have used the word "expect". Yes, I'm sure Doug and Mark "hope" to content but if either of them "expect" to contend they are delusional.

Yeah, assuming he's healthy I'd rather see Taylor Green get one last shot with some playing time in order to see if he can perform at the Major League level. I don't want Francisco anywhere near 3B other than in an emergency, and really don't want him manning 1B. I'd rather see Green as 1B/2B/3B. In the likely event Francisco is still a Brewer, I'd hope it was as the primary LH bat off the bench.

Green is not the prospect he once was, but he is just entering his "prime" years, so there is some hope that he could show something and be an acceptable MLB corner IF for the Brewers for a few seasons. With Chavez, you have a good idea of what you're getting, and as jericholicninja said, if we were expecting to be a playoff team, it may make sense to sign Chavez for several million for a season. However, in the current state of the Brewers, I would rather see how Green does in the role, because if he does well, we may be able to trade Ramirez at the deadline and have an inexpensive, home-grown 3B for a few years until a better option surfaces.

How many prognosticators pegged the Pirates and Indians for winning 90 plus games before last season started, winning 20 more games than the Giants and Phillies? How many pegged Baltimore and Oakland winning 93/94 games the year prior?

No question the odds are against the Brewers being a very serious contender for the playoffs next season, but like in most sports, unpredictable things happen every year whether it's multiple teams ending up being better than expected and/or multiple teams being worse than expected. That's a big reason for the appeal of sports to many fans, the volatility from year to year which is caused by a myriad of factors like health, players performing better than expected, or worse than expected. Thankfully, that's how sports are instead of a computer being able to just crunch a bunch of numbers and spit out who wins and loses, and that decides it.

Those are all younger teams with upside. We are an aging team. The Pirates played over their head, no doubt but they didn't exactly come out of nowhere.

Fan is short for fanatic.

I blame Wang.
