Marmol

TURBO

Please Doug, NOOOOOO!

Gordon Wittenmyer of the Chicago Sun-Times reports that the Brewers and Red Sox are among the teams interested in free agent reliever Carlos Marmol.

Marmol posted a 2.53 ERA over 21 appearances after joining the Dodgers around mid-season this year and struck out 27 batters over 21 1/3 innings. That's not say that he's fixed, as his control was just as bad as ever, but it's no surprise that teams still see some upside here.

I would sign Marmol if he was cheap. His horribleness last year looks almost entirely due to a inexplicable spike in HR/9 over the first half of the season with the Cubs. His velocity is not down at all. Might be a good buy-low.

No. Where's he stand right now? 7-9BB/per 9? In Homerun friendly Miller? Walk,Walk, 3run HR loss.

While Marmol may have 46 scoreless innings. There will be 12innings he appears where he gives up 30runs+ essentially losing every one of those games unless it was out of hand in the first place.

I'd pass simply on the basis of what he puts people through every time he's out there. Sure sometimes he'll come through the the big strikeout but who needs that drama? There's other guys out there with closing experience who are available that are a bit more efficient.

I would rather have bad Eric Gagne, bad Danny Kolb, and bad Derrick Turnbow than Marmol. I think he is finished. If we thought Axford and Krod gave us heartburn; Marmol would give everyone heart attacks

I'm with you up to the point you mentioned Turnbow. His last Brewer outing (ironically at Wrigley less than 24 hours before Gallardo tore his ACL) was the ugliest outing I think I've ever seen in 55 years of being a baseball fan. Yost had to remove him with one out to go to save him further embarrassment in a game they were already down 19-7. What a memory!

He had a 2.53 ERA and 11.4 K/9 after moving to the Dodgers last season... Is this just because people hate him as a former Cub?

Obviously he shouldn't be the closer, and obviously they shouldn't give him much $, but he could help the bullpen.

He also had 8 bb/9.

Yes, which is why he's not an elite pitcher but merely a useful RP. If he had a normal BB/9 he would be one of the best pitchers in baseball.

He has had a high BB/9 his entire career, that's just part of his skillset. Doesn't mean he can't be effective.

His whip is atrocious since he was good. That 7-8BB/9 just isn't going to get it done at MP. Just because he can be unhittable doesn't mean a team can't score 2runs off of him with 0 hits. It'll be Walk, Wild Pitch moves to 2b. Walk. Sac runners on 2nd/3rd. Wild Pitch run scored, K, Wild Pitch run scored. I mean he is worse than Hellweg on the mound last season in wildness.

5 or his 52 appearances went for 3Runs given up or more. 2 more at 2runs. 7/52 appearances were multiple runs outings. 5 more he gave up a run. so he's giving up runs 1/4 of his appearances.

LA also used him in very low pressure situations. Up 4runs or behind 2+runs.

Marmol's appearances for LA:

Down 3, Down 2, ahead 4, Down 4, ahead 9, Down 5, ahead 6, Down 2, Down 4, Down 4, Down 5, Down 1(1out AP), Ahead 3(1out AP), down 2, Ahead 7, down 3, down 2, ahead 7, down 3, down 2, down 3, down 2, down 2, ahead 11.

How many really honest good abs do you think the batters he was facing were giving when they are ahead by 4runs or more or behind by 4runs or more? 10/21 of those appearances.

Just for Lucroy's and Maldonado's sake, save those knees on all those wild pitches they will be chasing!

WHEW!!!!! Better them than us...

Enrique Rojas of ESPN Deportes reports that the Marlins and reliever Carlos Marmol have agreed to a one-year, $1.25 million contract, pending a physical.

Marmol, 31, is coming off a 4.41 ERA and 59/40 K/BB ratio over 49 innings last season between the Cubs and Dodgers. He's a decent enough gamble at this price, but his control remains a major issue.
