What About signing Garza?

Honestly, this is the DM secret move that I have been anticipating for this offseason. I could see him offering Garza a 5 year $75 million deal and slotting him in at #3 in the rotation behind Gallardo and Lohse.

Can we afford a deal like that? I was thinking like 4 for 48?

Garza turned down his QO, which is in the $14M/yr range. He likely won't accept *only* $12M/yr unless he's still unemployed 3/4 of the way through ST like Lohse was. I'd guess that's the only way he'll ever sniff the home clubhouse at Miller Park, too.

But I'd also guess Melvin would be extremely hesitant to give up their #1 pick 2 years in a row.

On top of that, while he may be one of the best SP's on the FA market, I just don't think Garza's a good enough pitcher for Milwaukee to justify that organizational cost.

He didn't because he wasn't offered one because he couldn't be offered one because he was traded mid-season.

Even if he had been offered the Brewers #1 pick is protected is it not?

The Brewers first-round pick is not protected. The top ten picks are protected from compensation and the eleventh is protected to the Blue Jays as it's already supplemental to them for not signing their 2013 first-round pick (Phil Bickford).

With the maximum posting fee of $20 Million now established for Japanese players would the Brewers A. pay that posting fee and B. have any realistic shot of signing Tanaka? With probably numerous teams offering the full $20 Million I can't imagine it would hurt to at least try. Tanaka would get to pick from the teams that posted the $20 Million fee.

most every team will likely offer the $20 million fee. it will all come down to the contract he's offered. I'm betting upwards of $100-120 million for six years. Someone will pay that looking for the next Darvish. But it won't be the Brewers - and even if it was - there are a bunch of other places that he'd pick over Milwaukee.
