Winter Weather Thread: 2013-2014

hawing

So the latest "coldest winters" graphic on the NWS site for Milwaukee (Dec 1 - Feb 22) has this winter currently as the 12th coldest recorded winter since 1870.

The scary part to me is this:

1916-1917-14th coldest - 17.8 avg temp

1917-1918-5th coldest - 15.5

1919-1920-15th coldest - 17.9

1976-1977 3rd coldest - 14.7

1978-1979 8th coldest - 16.2

1981-1982 10th coldest -17.1

I sure hope this doesn't mean that this is the start of a trend for the next 5-10 years as was the case during these two time periods (1916-1920 and 1976-1982).

Based on the forecast for the next few days, it looks like we have a chance to sneak into the Top 10.

If an El Nino develops as expected later this year, that would increase the odds of a warmer winter in 2014-15. It would also be good for the drought problems in the Southwest. Nobody really knows if this winter was a one-time thing or if there will be more in the upcoming years.

Meanwhile, it looks kind of chilly in the next week but it actually could be worse. The coldest air never really gets a good push to the south and ends up staying near the Canadian border.

Also, there is a good chance of a major snowstorm in the Midwest in the March 2-4 range. It's hard to say where the biggest impact will be at this point so stay tuned.

I heard on the news that the Farmer's Almanac pretty much nailed this winter including correctly predicting the weeks there would be major snow storms. On the other hand, the braniac, big-whig, climate science-y folks predicted a mild and much warmer than normal winter.

I just hope that if there is a snowstorm that it holds off until the 2nd....leaving for FL on the 1st..can't wait to escape this weather for a while!

I always get so impatient this time of year expecting the weather to improve so much when the calendar flips over to March. This year is especially bad because I have a feeling I will still be waiting for even decent weather come April 1st.

My two little girls are so ancy to get outside to the park and play; it is driving the whole family crazy being stuck inside.
