Casey McGehee back as a Brewer in 2014?

I am not on board with bringing back guys who couldn't hack it the first time through. It seems we are always linked to guys we cut or traded. If not by the media then by the fans.

I guess if the question were phrased "If you had to choose between McGehee and Betancourt, who would you choose?" I may put my vote in for McGehee, but I'd rather check the "none of the above" box.

His numbers in Japan were very good. That's not always the case with guys who go over there. I like him more than Juan Fransisco. If they could get him on a minor league deal with an out clause I'd be fine with it. Bianchi is a nice utility player, but he doesn't hit with enough power to replace Ramirez over any extended period.

I don't know Monty, I think I'd rather have Yuni than McGehee if only because he can play 4 positions terribly with deplorable hitting as opposed to Casey who can only play 2 positions terribly with deplorable hitting.

We could put McGehee at 3B, Yuni at SS, Weeks at 2B and Francisco at 1B to see if we could have the worst ranging, worst hitting infield ever assembled.

At least the bring back Russell Branyan talk has stopped.

How does his .306 ave and .922 ops stats in Japan correlate towards MLB stats? Is it a bunch of short fences with little pitching competition or the opposite or somewhere in between? Similar to the PCL?

He is definitely making much more in Japan than I would put in an incentives based NRI.

Japan is usually a step above AAA. However, Japan juiced the balls last season so trying to project is difficult.

Wladimir Balentin hit 60 home runs and slugged .779 but that was 19 more HR than the 2nd place guy, and 28 more than the third. McGehee did compare favorably with Andruw Jones who hit .244/.393/.456. McGehee was 15th in the Pacific League in BA.

Wonder if Balentin finds his way back to MLB off of that year?

I just don't understand the venom toward this guy. He dropped in out of nowhere, put up two outstanding seasons, but struggled in 2011 yet the team still won 96 games so as with Yuni, no harm done. He was first class all the way, involved in the community, and gave it his all but couldn't shake a slump that ended up lasting 2 years.

He went to Japan, seemingly found his stroke and is now back playing regularly and is off to a good start in a few games. Good for him!

If the Brewers are in contention and are looking for a bat and to shore up 1B, I'd be all for bringing him back if not later this year, then for 2015.

I don't really care about the off field stuff. As for his actual performance, what he did outside of his 2 good years is probably a better indication of how good he actually is. It lines up better with his MiLB stats and practically everything else he has ever done.

Fan is short for fanatic.

I blame Wang.

Since his two good years account for half his career plate appearances, you can't completely discount them nor can you conclude he won't ever return to that form at age 31. You also can't disregard his production in the Japanese league either.

The Japanese league is like AAA, hooray for being productive there? You seem to be drawn to players of limited talent (relative to their peers, not you or I) who overachieve, not just on the big league level, but in the minors as well.

While Melvin is fond of continually recycling the same players, and I would guess that a big part of that is he becomes too attached to his players, I'm certainly not going to be excited about the same names coming back around just because a player was once productive and is a good guy. At least all of the TX guys were "new" to us, but unless McGehee is a serious upgrade over what we have at 1B, what's the point?

It's no different than the K-Rod claim people like to make that he's "single handedly restocking the farm system" when he's not and in fact the player he was traded for isn't even playing baseball right now. Like many things discussed on this site people will favor the devil they know rather than the one they don't know and I don't think Melvin is any different.

The bottom line here should be if a player's production will be *that* much better than the guys he's replacing to justify his cost? I firmly believe that for many of these issues being discussed the perceived marginal upgrades aren't worth the cost. I use the word "perceived" because in many cases I think the root issue is what I discussed in the paragraph above and the production may in fact be a wash if both players were given an equal opportunity.
