while yesterday's game may give you pause to question this thread, the brewers remain second in the league with fewest walks issued [218] and second best in the league with 2.93 walks issued per 9 innings.

san diego, by far, remains the best at fewest passes granted.

How unusual was it that Brewers starter Ben Sheets walked two Houston hitters in the first inning Monday night? Entering the game, Sheets was averaging 1.9 walks per nine innings. A look at the top five control pitchers in the NL, through Sunday:

Pitcher, team BB/9 IP

Greg Maddux, San Diego Padres 1.5

Dave Bush, Milwaukee 1.8

Ted Lilly, Chicago 1.8

Ben Sheets, Milwaukee 1.9

John Smoltz, Atlanta 1.9

as the season wears on, the brewers are surrendering a few more walks, but they're still second best in the league behind the padres.

269 walks issued (second only to the pads) and 2.99 walks issued per nine innings (tied with the rockies and second to the aforementioned pads).
