Milwaukee Bucks Thread 2009–2010 (part 2)

I like Babbit, and to a lesser extent Singler. I would be thrilled if either is there when we use Philly's Second Round pick. The 15th pick is kind of a dead zone in the Draft. Past the blue chips, not quite to the flyers. It's where the Haislip's of the world end up. Athletes with low basketball IQ, guys who Bilas describes as "long". I don't like to draft on pure potential, and I just wish I saw a little more of Orton this year.

Singler is going back to school, rwa12. I would have liked him as a second round pick as well.

Some blue chip prospect is bound to drop to that 7 to 10 range. If it's Greg Monroe from Gtown, or especially Wes Johnson from Syracuse, I'm trying really hard to trade up. Take back a bad contract by sending out Gadz or Redd if need be. If we have to throw in a lottery protected first next year too, that's fine. I really want Johnson on this team.

never too early for draft predictions (wants)

15 Larry Sanders PF VCU

37 Stanley Robinson SF UCONN

47 Sherron Collins PG KANSAS

Sanders might be raw offensively but is a ready defensively. has only played organized basketball for 4 years so he is very raw. Really like Robinson's game in watching UCONN. sort of reminds me of Mba a Moute. Collins might not be a good defensive and is a little short for PG and definitely too short for the sg, but was a great scorer at Kansas. If he shows the ability to be a better point and play some defense he will be a good nba point guard.

I feel much, much better about UW's recruiting class now. We can't expect too much from two freshmen guards as the primary backups, but in case of injury they are in a much better place now. UW already has a verbal from a PG in IL for 2011.

Same w/Marquette. Don't know how much the big man will be able to contribute this year, but hopefully by the end of the season he can give them quality minutes and a rebounding presence. Interesting situation there now... I was upset when they signed Newbill because they needed a big man, thought they should have held on to it. Maybe they know someone is leaving and/or won't make grades this semester. Maybe one of the freshmen can get financial aid or an academic scholarship for a year and not need an athletic scholarship. You never know, someone may get stupid and try stealing X-Boxes out of dorm rooms too.

That is against NCAA rules. You cannot give academic scholarships to athletes.

You cannot give academic scholarships to athletes.

Not even if they earn it?

From everything I have read they cannot. Now that could be wrong but I have heard it from a lot of different people. Think of the way that teams like Kentucky would exploit that rule.

My very quick, skimming, interpretation of the NCAA rules on that is that they can take academic scholarships, but they still count against the # of scholarships (total amount of money) available to that sport. So the 12 (I believe) in basketball or the 85 in football. You also cannot give someone a track scholarship (or any sport I believe) and then have them play football in hopes that it wouldn't count against the football scholarships. Not sure how it works with someone who would want to play football and basketball.

In the end this should probably be in the NCAA basketball thread, but I'm just throwing it out there because of the last few posts.

(I'm not a lawyer by any means and I didn't have time to fully read and analyze everything, so I could be wrong...)

I think you can receive one, if you qualify for one, after 2-3 years into school. I have heard of several senior to be players going onto academic scholarships in order to allow the team to bring in another player. In football, if you start school as a walk on, you are unable to receive an athletic scholarship until you have completed 2 years of eligibility.

My buddy, who was the #3 quarterback recruit in the nation in 1991, got a half-academic, half-athletic scholarship to Arizona State.

They get 13 schollies for D1 buckets, by the way.

It used to be 15, but the NCAA stepped in and did away with that, as they are all about the student-athlete.

They're all about Title IX. And thanks to the reduction in D1 scholarships, guys that would have ridden the pine at UNC or Duke are now starring for teams like Butler and Gonzaga.

I should have rephrased this. They can get an academic scholarship but they still count as a scholarship athlete for that sport. It does not free up a scholarship spot for teams.

Just a comment on the Boston V Cleveland game. I don't think any of the Bucks fans are stunned that Mo Williams can't defend and is forcing a lot of shots.

If LBJ is leaving Cleveland, he could help us out and go west.

I could see him going to the Clippers. That would be quite the storyline, Kobe vs. Lebron in LA.

The more I think about it, the more sense it makes. Think about it, a lineup of Baron Davis, Eric Gordon, Lebron James, Blake Griffin and Chris Kaman. I think they only have one more player under contract, Deandre Jordan, and then they could let Lebron pick the new coach and who he wants on his bench.

Mark it down, its going to happen.

I don't see the big difference if Lebron goes to the Bulls. They're both in our division, so they basically become the Cavs (maybe a bit better). We still have to go thru him anyways.

Hopefully we can get in on the Cavs fire sale if Lebron leaves. I wouldn't mind Delonte or AV on our team.

What is the max amount of money and years he can get from another team? Just curious.

I believe it's 6 years, $125 million. Something like that.

The Cavs can give 6 years like 125 million and another team can give 5 years 101 million or something like that. The Cavs can give one more year and about 1 million more a year is what I heard on ESPN this morning so my numbers are probably off, but that is what they said.
