Random thoughts that are pointless and too dumb to say anywhere else thread: 2009 (May – Dec.)

Patrick, yes! I wonder this all the time! Yet I've gotten into a Scottish band recently, and his accent is clear as day. It boggles my mind.

Glasvegas, I'm guessing? Do you have any problems with the accent, because it's very thick?

Anyways, my random thought is this. What happened to butterflies? When I was growing up every garden had them - now it's like seeing a unicorn in my yard!

I used to play chess in when I was bored in study hall in high school, it was a way for me to remain competitive even though I was in class (the teacher of this particular study hall was actually the adviser of the chess club). Now I find myself playing chess quite often in my free time to keep my mind sharp. It's weird how things in my life keeping coming back around.

I have always been confused about birds migrating. Around this time of year, we start seeing Canadian Geese flying in formation and what I have heard all my life is that they are flying south for the Winter. However, I still see geese around in the Winter. Are the geese we see in the Winter from farther north or have they just decided to tough it out?

Also, why does everyone always notice the first robin they see in Spring, but never seem to notice their disappearance around this time of year. All of sudden, they are just gone.

You've been put on notice America, foreign cooks have one-upped you on fried chicken. We have nothing left to cling to when asserting our superiority, other than Weird Al and Joey Chestnut.

Just remember the number one fast food chain in China is KFC.

Powdered gatorade stains the skin worse than any substance known to man.

Its one of the disturbing trends at ultimate tournaments I used to play in. Instead of someone getting dumped with gatorade, they get dumped with orange powder... and are orange for a week.

Is it me, or has "summer food" stayed around a bit longer this year? By summer food, I mean sweet corn, watermelon, honeydew, etc... Normally, I start buying sweet corn at the end of July, and by the end of August, it's gone. But some of the best corn I've had all year I bought in September. The stuff I bought at the beginning of August wasn't nearly mature enough, and wasn't nearly as flavorful. It just seems that everything this growing season has been later.

Dry year. Stuff is probably a little behind in growth. Missed the asparagus completely this year.

As far is the corn, the heat effects it's maturity much more than the dry. Corn hybrid varieties are sorted by, among other things, relative maturity. Relative maturity is based on growing degree days, or how many heat units it takes to get it ripe. It being dry would effect pollination(how well the ear is covered by kernals) and overall size of the ear. Each depending on when it was dry. Ear size is determined relatively early in the year, and pollination is late after the tassel, which contains the pollen, emerges. Corn is a self pollenator so it needs moisture to develop lots of pollen on a healthy tassel.

Now for random

I witnessed a WILD car accident today going north on 41 thru oshkosh. A car somehow was crossing the median right towards me and as it crossed its wheels caught the sod and that caused the car to flip several times in the air. The flipping kept it from hitting me or going into northbound traffic so that is good I guess. I hope the people in the car are ok. Lots of people going South were stopped so I motored on as I was hauling a load of cattle and wanted them off the trailer. I drove race car for 8 years and this was race track style flipping.

So I get home and figure I've got the big story. Nope. While working outside today my dad was stung by multiple wasps and became incoherent and had to be rushed to the hospital. What a day.

FS Wisconsin showed for the umpteenth time the Brewers Classic game from 2007 where the Brewers pounded Sharpie and the D-backs, yet Jeff Cirillo had the last laugh by pitching a clean 9th inning and striking out Craig Counsell in the process. Watching this time, though, I finally saw the part where pitchleague and hammytime get camera time.
Remember: the Brewers never panic like you do.

hooray us!

Supposedly, we were on several times during the real broadcast but were only shown on that classic version during the Cirillo inning. BOOOO goes out to the editors.
