Random thoughts that are pointless and too dumb to say anywhere else thread: 2009 (May – Dec.)

PeaveyFury
I didn't tell her that when my friend's dad checked out of an outdoor Menards lumber yard, he showed the security guy his yellow slip instead of the pink one and had a gun pulled on him.
They give guns to those guys!?

On a similar note a friend and I were hauling a load of landscape timbers out from the west side Madison store a few years ago and the guard got downright nasty because the guy at the counter inside gave us the wrong slip and we just handed it to the guard not even really noticing it was the wrong one. The guy ordered us out of the truck and wanted to search the vechicle and threatened to call the police. We may have had all of $40 worth of materials in the back of the truck and this guy was acting like it was Ft. Knox heist instead of just calling inside to the service counter for the correct slip.

If they're so head-over-heels into loss prevention, maybe they should train their check-out people to properly scan items.

I got 5 cases of vinyl flooring tile for the price of 5 individual tiles this summer when they improperly keyed in the item(a 95% discount... my boy was distracting me and I didn't realize their mistake until I was at home) and a few days ago they failed to scan my 70 ct. bag of washers along with the screws I bought (saved about $2 there). These incidences both occurred at the Northridge Menard's (in NW Milwaukee).

There is an article in today's local paper about the proposed expansion of the state's largest dairy operations (Currently 7,000 cows). They are getting the necessary approvals to increase the herd to 13,000 cows and in doing so, the farm would produce more waste than all but two Wisconsin cities (Milwaukee and Madison).

It is amazing that a 13,000 cow dairy just outside of Rosendale ( A town of about 1,100) can produce that much poop.

It looks like it's on the fast track to approval, but I am not excited about this. CAFOs (Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations) produce nasty waste that gets into the water supply, and sometimes into the meat. When I started researching this, I found out there are almost 200 CAFOs in Wisconsin. ick.

I wonder if these CAFOs are what we saw a few years ago while motorcycling across the Southwest. There would be these huge corrals/pens, with what looked like thousands of cows packed into them; I mean packed in so tightly they could hardly move. They also appeared to be nearly knee deep in mud and/or their own waste. Nothing at all like our local dairy farms. They made me sad.

the wife and I are heading to Vegas for the Trans-Siberian Orchestra concert. Pretty dang excited and expected to be awe-struck about this time tomorrow night.

However, it appears that it could be just their new rock opera "Night Castle" and not their Christmas material. We'll be bummed if it's not Christmas but still, it's TSO so it'll be good.

This doesn't have much to do with the check-out people, but Menards has teams that go store to store and they try to steal stuff. Essentially what happens is the store managers know they are coming, and the security people try to get as much stuff out of the store as possible. Anything they take goes to the next store, and is taken off the culprit's inventory. I have heard stories of bathroom sinks and display Christmas trees getting out of stores without being caught.

huh? Menard's does recon against itself? They steal from other "branches" to see if they can get away with it? Is Michael Scott running this company?

Please explain this. I don't understand the logic behind it.

Seriously.

Yup, that's a CAFO. And it's definitely poop. One of the many reasons we try not to eat meat from CAFOs anymore, and choose to support our local small farms that raise grass-fed beef.

This needs to be explained? If they hire people who work for the company to steal, they can find out who is allowing these things to happen and fix them/get rid of the problem.

Menards has a loss-prevention team at their corporate headquarters. One of the jobs of this team (they are employed by Menards) is to fly to different areas and go to the stores to test how effective the stores are with loss-prevention. Do they have tight security? Can people just walk out with anything they want without ever being questioned? I'm sure Menards isn't the only company that has teams that test their stores' security.

Knew someone in college who did that pretend stealing thing for Menard's. Said he got away with it about 75% of the time, often times taking stuff from both the store and the outside warehouse. Often times, the outside guy just waved him through, or only pretended to compare the receipt with what was in his car.

He said they often would "test" him as well...let him take 2-3 bookcases instead of one, and then see if he turned them in at the next store. Often, guys would just say the store did fine and then return them for credit.

When I was at TRU, an LP guy was caught in a theft thing as well...supposedly, they thought he took $200K+ in video game systems before they caught him, all from the DC.

Nah, what makes you say that? Every TSO show should be standard -- a narrated (and perhaps slightly abridged) retelling of the Christmas Eve & Other Stories concept album, an intermission, a second set consisting of songs from their other albums (both christmas and non-chistrmas), a teasing intermission, and an encore where they play a few more tracks (often repeating songs they've already played, like the popular "Sarajevo 12/24"). With lots of lights, lasers, fire, wonderful melodies, outstanding vocals, inspiring lyrics/stories, and frenetic, expert musicianship. Have fun! http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif

Last week was my 31st b-day. Some friends and I went to the Central Coast in Fort for diner, then on to In Good Spirits to see the David Marshall Band. This evening out inspired me to go out like 8 nights in a row, mostly to my local, beloved, Captain Missy's. It is there where my new sig was explained to me. Also 8 nights in a row was 6 too many.

  • 2 weeks later...

This year I'm scheduled for my first total "Christmas vacation" (no work days from Christmas Eve until after New Year's) for the first time since 1991. 1991.

However, I'm still due to work through the 23rd and I appear to be out of ambition today.

Remember: the Brewers never panic like you do.

Me too. The 24th and 31st are holidays at my work, so I just needed to take 3 days off to make it an 11-day vacation. First time I've had a X-mas vacation since college, but the lack of work then was unpaid. I've been lacking ambition for the better part of a week now. Next week should be brutal.

Is it weird that I kind of like Wyoming's football jerseys?
Absolutely not! What could be better than brown, gold, and white?? http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif

I dig Wyoming's gold pants and the extra swooshes of alternating color down the sides. Maybe that's the key to not being ranked dead last in NCAA DI....
