I read this off a football injury list a few minutes ago. Kind of cracked me up:

"New Orleans TE Darnell Dinkins was out yet against with a fractured left football. No word on his return date."

I'm not sure that I understand the opposition to cell phone use in planes. I guess I can understand if you are trying to read and the person next to you is on his or her cell phone for the entire flight. However, using that logic, shouldn't they ban all conversation on flights? Why is a cell phone conversation more irritating than a face to face conversation? Is it because people tend to talk louder on cell phone or perhaps the fact that you can only hear one side of the conversation?

What I really don't understand is people who are annoyed by people using a cell phone in an elevator. How long is that average elevator ride? 30 seconds..at most? You can't handle someone talking on their cell phone for that short period of time?

the bluetooth users are the ones that bug me. they start talking (in an elevator or wherever) and I think they're talking to me. Then they turn their head and I see the dongle on their head.

The theory is that the electrical signals of a cell phone will interfere with the electrical signals needed in the cockpit. People fear that cell phones that are powered on in a plane will cause it to crash.

On a similar note, I always thought he phrase "play action" was kind of an odd one.

I find a lot of the terms in football odd and confusing especially since I never played organized football. "Play action" is a good example. Some others:

Crack back block

Flanker

nickle (back, coverage, defense)

dime - this one is really confusing because it really has nothing to do with the number 10 (does it?)

tackle (as a noun, not a verb - how can someone on offense be a tackle?)

Quarterback, Halfback, Fullback - not so much the names, but where they line up. In the normal eye formation - Shouldn't the guy behind the quarterback be the halfback and then the guy behind him be the fullback (logically).

Draw play

Flat

Post Pattern

Bubble screen

Tailback - why does there need to be 3 different terms for the same position? (half back, running back)

Trap block

Off Tackle

I'm always amazed when I'm watching a game with someone who is more knowledgeable about football that I am (does not take much), and they know right away if there are not enough or too many men on the field (how?) or they say something like "Wow did you see that Block?!"..uhh no..I was watching the guy with the ball.

A trap block is when an offensive lineman "pulls" (from his set position) down the line and hits a defensive lineman who was at first unblocked.

I think this theory has pretty much been disproved. From what I understand, most European flights allow cell phone usage and the main hangup in the US is the annoyance that it might cause for some of the passengers.

I'm basically opposed to cell phones overall. Whenever I see someone wandering about in a store gabbing on their phone, I just want to grab the phone and smash it. Yeah, I know, I should get over it.

These darn people and their conversations, having a good time! ARGHH
I'm sure they are having a good old time yukking it up, but they are usually oblivious to their surroundings, especially when driving, and usually quite loud out in public.

It's annoying, but I need to get over it.

That reminds me of a few months back when the wife and I were in a mall somewhere (I think one of the ones in Milwaukee, though I really don't remember). This girl, who couldn't possibly have been older than 16 or so, was walking by, jawing on her cell phone, loudly talking about her birth control choice with whoever was on the other end. I'm sure her parents were proud.

Meant to post this a few months ago, but a Time Warner commercial this morning reminded me.

I think the Brewers need to change their give away or Time Warner needs to up the stakes for the winner of the "Crazy Hat Shuffle". One month of free Time Warner internet? For one, I'm guessing that if you are already a customer, you can't use it. If you can, many people have bundled services with discounted rates, so what is the value? If you don't already have TWC for your interenet provider, who is going to change providers for 1 month? I realize that this is TWC's plan, to get you hooked on their service so that you don't want to change back, but I'm guessing many people just turn down the give a way anyways.

I've wondered about this too. Though I think the Time Warner sponsored contest is the Triple Play Trivia - the one that enrages me so when people miss what to me is a simple guess. TWC doesn't even serve Dane County, so if they picked me, what would I do with the prize? (besides apparently transfer it to brucrustu, who earlier this year assured me he was ready to help me out in just such a case; but if I have to sign for it, isn't it still my taxable income?)

I would be a bad Triple Play Trivia contestant, because I usually have figured out the answer after the first clue and would be trying to talk over Robb Edwards by saying, "Trevor Hoffman. It's HOFFMAN! I don't need any more clues!"

I think I'm content with self-righteously knowing the answers and delivering a merciless "sieve" chant to contestants who guess wrong.

Hawing, I have assured you if I ever win something from Charter it's all yours'. Seeing as I have TW in a bundle, and my girlfriend won this prize earlier in the year I should get on redeeming it and report back.

Now all we need is for Charter to become a Brewers sponsor. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif But thanks in advance.

Moving on to another random thought...the gingko trees across the street from us dropped a bunch of their leaves overnight, presumably because of the freeze. It's normal for these trees to drop a lot of leaves abruptly, and kind of neat to watch. It's weird to see a couple of inches of green leaves in the street, though.

My theory is that cell phones interfere with peoples' need to use the $10/minute phones on the plane.

It seemed like there were an awful lot of kids (like K-12 school-aged) at Woodman's West in Madison today, with parent/guardian types.

Why wouldn't they be in school? Is this par for Woodman's, burniebrewer? (Not to put you on the spot, but you're there more often than I am.)

Half-day today for Madison schools.
