I'm waiting for Ned to simply say "(Bleep) happens" and walk away from a press conference when something bad happens.

This would definitely be an improvement on what he's been saying, or isn't saying, lately.

Seriously -- why on earth do you send Villy out to mop up in an 11-1 game?

Bill Hall should have totally pitched. In all seriousness I also don't understand why Villy was in there today, should have just thrown Mota out there to see what would happen, if a couple runners get on then go to someone like Villy. I also don't think it was necessary to have Bush throw 124 pitches today but since it worked out I am not going to crucify Ned just yet. I would guess if Bush didn't have a full week off coming up he wouldnt have thrown Bush in the 8th

Who are they going to use as a long relief guy tomorrow if Parra gets knocked out early? They might as well have thrown Mota out there again to see what happens, isn't he the odd man out anyway when Suppan returns?

Ummm...no. The problem is when he gets lit up again and it turns into an 11-7 game, you'd have to bring in Villanueva or someone else today anyway...so now you have two guys unavailable for tomorrow. Of course that would give people something else to criticize Yost about, so its all good.

The starting pitchers have been taking a toll on the bullpen the past week or so, and someone has to get the outs. Weren't a whol lot of other options.

I'm not saying let him throw the whole inning no matter what, but why not give him a few base runners and take him out if he gives up 3 runs or so. I would've rather seen Riske or Gagne because they'd likely only pitch one inning tomorrow if they get in but nothing more. If Villanueva would get in tomorrow it could be 2-3 innings. It's probably not that big of a deal but I didn't want to see Villanueva in a game when we're up 10 and we play the next day.

Villy is the "long man". I used to think that meant he would pitch in situations where the starter leaves early-ish, or the pen is tired, and you need a couple of innings, but it turns out what that actually means is "pitches exclusively in blowouts".

What a useful, constructive way to use a roster spot! And what a good spot for one of your better young pitchers!

"We were going to really mix and match from the seventh inning on because we had the pitching do it," Yost said. "I thought Gagné's stuff was really, really good. He just made some mistakes out over the plate. He was commanding it down. He wasn't all over the place. He just got some balls over the middle and they hit him, but I was encouraged a little bit with his stuff."

Seriously, I think the guys could set Ned's house on fire and he would still defend them.

Stop treating the "kids" like kindergartners.

I could say "Turnbow threw really well today, he just happened to miss the strike zone with his pitches by about 3 feet.

As a rule, I like a manager to defend his players in public, and to not throw them under the bus. If you're going to criticize, save it for the clubhouse. But it is just hilarious to associate the word "encouraged" with that particular pitching performance.

Why do some continue to get so upset about the fact that he doesn't throw his guys under the bus to the press? He's not going to do it. Personally, I think it's nothing but a positive thing. (I assume) you don't have any idea what he says to them outside the press room. Since he rarely criticizes guys to the press, yet he has dealt with problems almost immediately following a "vote of confidence" in the past, you really have to take his sound bites with a grain of salt.

When he does actually throw a guy under the bus (that isn't simply a byproduct of defending another player), then you've got a story.

  • 2 weeks later...

In reference to Yost & tonight's game/outcomes -- To quote a famous baseball announcer's legendary call, "I don't believe what I just saw!"

The man found new ways to try & rip a hole in the space-time continuum tonight, and the Brewers were able to withstand it. Of course, this tells us that Ned has in fact created a hole in the fabric of the space-time continuum. Presumably to help Mota return home to Zirmucon VIII.

I can't even begin to put into words how awful Ned's strategy was tonight. I'm glad the Crew won, but I'm worried that Mota is now going to be used in high-leverage situations because, 'He's pitching good. He's been pitching good.' I'm worried about Gagne too, but to a lesser extent because, while Mota got quite lucky tonight (his command looked horrible), Gagne actually looked pretty darn good. I don't know what to make of all of this, but I'm sure it's probably A-Rod's fault somehow.

Like was pointed out last night, Gagne threw only 11 pitches, and 10 were strikes. If he continues to pitch like that for the remainder of the season, and hopefully into the post-season, his contract is well worth the price tag.

As for Yost, his moves worked out, though I admit even I was perplexed by him batting Torres. Also, I wish he had made some defensive replacements late in the game. Putting Counsell in for Weeks might have saved me years on my life yesterday.

I usually don't listen to Milwaukee radio, but this morning on the way to work, I was listening to 620 (my XM radio is not working for some reason....grrrr). Apparently they have Yost on every Tuesday morning and Gene Mueller interviews him. I'm guessing that Gene does not look forward to Tuesday mornings. Man, Yost is surly. It was like Mueller couldn't ask Ned a question without getting a flat denial. Ned's attitude was like "what a stupid question, I'm a ML manager and your a hack DJ, what right do you have to ask me questions?, is this obligation that I agreed to almost over?"

Mueller: "Is there a sense of a veteren presense on the bench adding a guy like Durham to the team to go along with guys like Cameron and Counsel?"
Yost: "No, there is no different feeling on the team........................"
Mueller: "You've been a manager for several years now with the Brewers. Is it refreshing to finally be buyers instead of sellers and have guys like Sabathia and Durham to work with down the stretch?"
Yost: "I wouldn't say it's refreshing..........."
Mueller: "Did you have to talk with Weeks about the addition of Durham and what it means to him?"
Yost: "I didn't have to say much to him. He's a smart guy........"

I'm paraphrasing, but all of Yost's replies had an impatient tone to them. I realize that after so many interviews it gets tiresome answering the same questions over and over, but instead of answering "I wouldn't say it's refreshing", can't you just humor the guy and answer "Yeah, it's exciting to be in this situation......."

I can't even begin to put into words how awful Ned's strategy was tonight.

I was not a fan of throwing Mota in the 6th. And I was not a fan of pitching to Pujols in the 9th.

Other moves that might be deemed questionable were playing Bill Hall over Branyan, throwing Gagne in the 7th, not pinch hitting Branyan for Hall in the 10th, not bunting in the 8th after Hall singled, and letting Torres hit in the 10th. To be honest, I don't have much of a problem with any of those.

Patrick425,

With all due respect to Gene Mueller who's a nice enough fella, his questions are just cliches and out of date. "Buyers rather than sellers"? They haven't been sellers for 2 years and even that deal (Lee for Cordero), addressed a need at the time for a closer rather than a sale for prospects. What relevance does that question have now? Same with "Veteran presence"? On a team full of 30+ guys (Counsell, Kendall, Kapler, Cameron, Torres, Riske Gagne, Mota, Rivera)?

The timely and relevant questions that the audience would like to hear were: Has Bill Hall re-established himself as the everyday 3rd baseman? and What roster moves are you contemplating to make room for Suppan?
