This argument only works if you don't believe in the intangible aspect of sports called momentum, which obviously you don't. I have played organized sports, and tend to believe its very real. As will the majority of people you ask.
I believe it's real. Just not in baseball. Now football and basketball are a much different story.

---------------------------

the Rockies did not have momentum at the end of last year? of course it exists in baseball.

How are they different stories? Football is more similar to baseball than it is to basketball as far as the flow of the game.

Momentum is a mental state and anyone who has played sports knows it's 50% mental, if not more. When good things happen it starts to make people positive and then positive things are more likely to happen. So much is in your state of mind. It doesn't guarantee anything but it makes your state of mind more positive and your opponents more negative. Momentum is all about state of mind and this is so crucial in almost anything in life. As you build a head of steam of positive thinking you're more likely to knock down the barriers between you and your ideal.

Yost has managed as bad as he ever has the last 5 games. And not just because they lost all 5.

Leaving in starters too long, blowing thru your bullpen when the game is pretty much over, and bad lineups. I've defended him this year for the most part, but he's been horrible the last few days.

I was at work reading the post game comments today. I read one of Yost's saying we weren't scoring runs because we were facing two all-star pitchers.

Um Nedly, so the Cubs weren't facing all-star calibur pitchers? Give me a break

Know how much Ned Yost cares about making the correct moves to put his team in the best position to win? So much that he starts Craig _____ Counsell at 3B today over Russell Branyan.

Fire Yost now.

Maybe he needs to have the portrait with the life-like eyes of his dead race car driver friend, whom he told Rick Sutcliffe sometimes taunts him after Brewers losses, removed from his office? Or see a priest? (I apologize to anyone who did not see that bizarre aside on ESPN the other night, but it certainly left my jaw slack. Perhaps the lest said about it, the better.)

Of course the players deserve most of the blame for this series, but Yost set the tone in the final game of the Houston series when in a close game he left Suppan in at least 3 batters too long.

That game was a pretty big downer headed into such a big series.

Things like that go unnoticed but it made me feel very uneasy.

Of course there is no defense for Yost trotting Kendall out there day in and day out no matter how bad he is slumping.

One things for sure, Yost's fate for 2009 is squarely resting on him righting the ship and making the playoffs. Whether he can handle that pressure is another thing.

Sticking Weeks back in the leadoff spot.

Finally changing up the order, except Craig Counsell is starting at 3rd instead of Russell Branyan.

Playing Kendall today even though it was painfully obvious to everyone that he needed a day off after last night's game (and don't a bunch of catchers sit on day games after night games anyway?!).

Waiting until the 9th inning of the last game to throw at one of the Cubs hitters when they've been as comfortable as can be in the box for four games.

Bringing in your setup man in an 8-run ballgame just to throw at someone.

Leaving your LOOGY in to face five straight right-handed batters (after not bringing him in to face back-to-back lefties two nights before).

And calling a hit-and-run with your pitcher up and your aging catcher at first base, then using the heat as part of your explanation/excuse (and not by saying "The heat sapped my brain, I don't know what in the world I was thinking.")

The Cubs kicked our arses fair and square this series...I don't think you can fault Ned for the losses, the players were just downright abysmal. But even so, I don't think he acquitted himself very well this series.

Simply put, he's not a very good manager.

Could not agree more. The team lost their composure just like they did in the Cardinals series last year. When times get tough and they need some real leadership, like Ned has actually shown at times this year, he completely lets them down. I think I'm more disgusted with how they went out at the end versus losing the 4 games. Truly pathetic performance by players and manager alike.

Yeah, you don't have to tell me twice. I've been in the "Fire Yost" camp for a long time. I just didn't want it to sound like I was blaming Ned for the sweep.

Well for all of Ned Haters this series really was not his fault at all.

The cubs smacked around whoevre we put out there and our hitter missed everything @ the plate

and left a tribe on the bases.

Well yeah, thats what happens when you put in Brian Shouse against their best righties.

the brewers as a team was just horrible these 4 games .Thier discpline on the field and in the hitter box is horrible.

The brewers manager is horrible, and we have to see if this has the heart to come back and play playoff baseball.

I fear we are seeing the return of "Nervous Ned" from last year. They fight back, the pressure builds, and his team comes out tense for the gazillionth time. I don't know how anyone can watch their swings the past 4 days and say they were loose. Then, when he knows he's overmatched he sends someone out to throw at a guy. I had a similar feeling today, as I did last September in the beanball war game.

Don't jerk me around to finish a game or two out of the playoffs. Get hot and make him look like a genius or tank so he gets canned.

More fuel on the fire (ned Yost). We were 1-6 on the homestand-losing 5 in a row. These were divisional games.......

Yes these are proffesional athletes and coaches, but they must absolutely be feeling the pressure. Maybe some home cooking in Atlanta will make a difference, and clear up Ned's head. This is definately starting to feel like last year.

Marc Newfield--completely agree.
