Leuer returns to practice

By Patrick Herb on February 15, 2010 2:14 PM

Junior forward Jon Leuer has not appeared in a game or practiced since

injuring his wrist vs. Purdue on Jan. 9. Until now.

Leuer was cleared to return to practice Monday morning and joined his

teammates on the court during today's practice at the Kohl Center. Last

week, the Orono, Minn., native began shooting after practice, but he

has now been officially cleared to return to the court.

There is still no timetable set for his return to game action.

"I'll have to see him on the floor. It'll be tryouts again when he gets back

to practice," head coach Bo Ryan said of Leuer at his weekly press

conference Monday. "If he comes back to practice he's going to have to

try to get back into the lineup I would think."

Leuer underwent surgery without complication on Jan. 12 to repair a fractured

left wrist. He started the first 16 games of the season and was the Badgers'

second-leading scorer at the time of the injury, averaging 15.4 points

per game. He also led the team with 6.2 rebounds and 1.2 blocks per

game.

In his absence, the 14th-ranked Badgers (19-6, 9-4) have

boasted a 6-3 record. Wisconsin returns to the court Thursday at

Minnesota. Tip-off is set for 8 p.m. on ESPN.

That's awesome.

The comment from Ryan about Leuer having to compete is nice coach-speak, but in reality Leuer is going to need to see as much time as possible on the floor if he's going to return to form before the end of the regular season.

The usual occupant of that seat is Curt Mueller of Quench Gum fame, and it's not uncommon for his outfits to 'stand out.'
I worked for Curt one summer. That guy is something else.

One of the 'tame' stories I can tell about him is when I was walking in the Mueller parking lot and I saw a BMW flying straight at me at about 90 MPH (in a parking lot mind you) and right before he was about to hit me he peeled off and pulled back around and rolled down his window and started laughing hysterically before peeling off again.

I personally find him to be quite funny, others maybe not so much http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif

Syracuse lost at home to unranked Louisvile. Georgetown lost to lowly Rutgers.

Like I said, I guess the Big East is full of average teams.

And today, Nova lost to the 13th place UConn team at home. Such a terrible conference.

As I type Kansas is losing to A&M on the road, not a very good couple days for ranked teams.

Sorry A&M fans, I jinxed them.

In Lunardi's latest Bracketology, he has Michigan State a 2 seed and Wisconsin a 3. I really can't think of anything that would justify giving MSU a better seed than Wisconsin. Wisconsin has six wins against teams projected to be in the field. MSU has three. Michigan State has probably been the 4th best team in the Big Ten over the past month.

UW won't get a #3 seed either. Mich St always seems to get bumped up a seed, and UW gets bumped down a seed or two. I also wouldn't be surprised if NC and/or UCONN slip into the tourney.

A friend of mine pointed out this story in the Chicago Tribune talking about the improvements in future Badger Duje Dukan's game from last year to this year.

Despite a slender frame, he's particularly strong on the defensive glass despite and often leads the break off of a defensive rebound and creates easy baskets. Teams have taken to playing him as physically as the referees will allow — and then some — but he's remained remarkably poised.
Sounds like quite the fit for Bo's system, especially now that they've been more willing to push the ball on the break and look for easy shot opportunities.

I'm just afraid the committee will try to "help" Wisconsin again by placing them in Milwaukee but screwing them over on the seed. I'd rather have them be a #3 far away than a 5 or 6 in Milwaukee with an extremely tough second round opponent again.

UNC probably has to win at least 5 of their last 6 games to feel good. Considering they still play @ Georgia Tech, @ Wake, and @ Duke, they have no chance.

With apologies for my ignorance, how is Duje Dukan pronounced? I'm just curious (though I guess if he's headed to Madison I'd find out eventually).

The last thing I'd want to see is if the Badgers fall to a 5 and have to face a Uconn team in the first round. UConn is one of those teams that is very inconsistent, but can beat anyone on any given day.

I don't think UNC is going to make it though.

(pronounced DOO-yay, DOO-kahn)

Potrykus' J-S Online Blog

Thank you! Mike Mahnke (PA system voice of the Badgers) is going to love pronouncing that. As it stands now, when he introduces the Badgers' starting five before games, he stretches the BO syllable in Bohannon so long it's almost silly.

I enjoy listening to Mahnke. He brings the same enthusiasm to high school games ("versus the CRICKETS! Of Fall Creek!") that he does to RON DAYNE! or KEATON! NANNNNN-KIVIL! http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif

I will definitely be surprised if the Badgers get better than a 5 seed. They've only been higher than a 5 twice since 99. They are almost always under-seeded. Michigan St. will get a 3 at least.
Usually I would agree like getting screwed with a 6 and having to play Pitt in Milwaukee. This year seems different though. We have some huge wins (Purdue, OSU, MSU, and DUKE and even Maryland) The past teams almost never did much outside of the conference, but I think the Duke and Maryland wins will get past those bumps.

Purdue vs. Ohio St tonight. The few teams ahead of UW in the standings are going to start beating each other up, which will definately help the Badgers chances of moving up. Big game at Minnesota tomorrow.

Purdue and Michigan State still have to play each other too. That guarantees that only one team even has a shot to end the season with only 3 losses. Assuming Wisconsin can take care of business the rest of the way they'll get at worst share of second place or be co-conference champions if the winner of that game slips up.

Um... that 5 or 6 seed playing in Milwaukee is starting to sound pretty good for UW. And any seed is sounding pretty good for MU.

Couldn't hit shots, Leuer obviously isn't anywhere near 100% yet, and that lack of inside presence broken record for MU won't skip.

47-42, and UW missed, I believe, 5 wide open 3-pointers in one posession... then proceeded to not score for the next 5 minutes.

Ugh.

I didn't catch the Marquette game as closely, but it just looked like they weren't moving the ball like they normally do.

Ugh.

Yeah, even at that time in the game, I had the feeling that'd be the possession to look back on & point to. Ugh.

I have to vent here about my distaste for the swing offense. I think it becomes far too vanilla at time, & almost inherently relies upon good three-point shooting. Normally, that's fine, but without an actual post presence (NANKIVIL I CURSE YOU!), defenses don't have to respect anything inside. Without a post presense, Hughes & co. need to attack the rim more instead imo, but Ryan seems content to just continue on hoisting the treys. Argh!
