The CC Sabathia thread: Latest - CC a Brewer! (part 3)

Hey, everyone, I'm still finding the need to edit quotes that are nested or too long. If you haven't read them, once again, here are the quote guidelines. For future reference, they're on the top of most board pages. Note too, that not every problematic quote has necessarily been edited.

On the other hand, there are a couple of "fixed code" notations. Mods don't mind giving a helping hand with the post editor causes goofiness. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif

That’s the only thing Chicago’s good for: to tell people where Wisconsin is.

If we are trading a stud like LaPorta we should be getting a pitcher that we control for several seasons like Greinke, Cain, or Billingsley. If all these rumors are true the Brewers are the only team offering a big time stud like LaPorta.

What makes you think LaPorta could land those guys? None of those guys are available right now according to reports, so we would have to wait until after the season but that does not help us win this year. Now I am not a big fan of giving up LaPorta but if that what takes us over the top then do it. The Dodgers offer of LaRoche, Hu, Young and the other guy was better than what we would give up without LaPorta in my mind. LaRoche and Hu were both really good prospects at the beginning of the year, but have not produced well, yet at the major league level. That does not mean they wont succeed. There are plenty of guy who take a little while to adjust to the big leagues.

Ive seen Hu play several times this year and he has the offensive potential of Craig Counsell. Laroche may still turn out to be decent but he is not a grade A prospect by any stretch of the imagination. We can get this done without a LaPorta type prospect and if not so be it. There is a reason teams dont give up top prospects anymore especially for rentals. Young talent is worth its weight in gold and trading a guy like LaPOrta who has all star potential makes little sense to me unless we are getting pitching that will be here for several seasons.

Just so it doesn't seem like sour grapes afterward to Tribe fans, in case Salome gets dealt, I've never been very high on him anyways. Being 5'7" limits his power potential and I have to question a guy who can't draw walks with such a small strike zone. He might be able to hit 88 MPH cheese at his eyes in the minors, but not 95 MPH cheese in the minors.

I'm rooting for a Gamel + Salome for Chocolate Chunk type deal.

I agree with Bernman on Salome. I would actually rather deal him than Green and Cain. I think Lucroy is a better prospect because from what I gather he is a better defensive catcher and he can hit as well.

If Salome is really 5'7" I have a hard time enivisioning him as an everyday major league catcher. I would take LaPorta out and substitute Salome for him.

I'd think the Indians probably would have a hard time envisioning it as well, and that's probably why he's not the centerpiece of the deal.

Article from the Cleveland Plain Dealer

"If the Milwaukee Brewers sweeten the deal for C.C. Sabathia today or tomorrow, the reigning American League Cy Young winner should be making his next start for them on Tuesday.

The Brewers have already agreed to give up outfielder Matt LaPorta, who could be playing left field for the Indians by midseason next year. The Indians, however, want an upgrade from the two other prospects they've been offered for Sabathia.

It's not known who those two prospects are, but if the Indians can get either Class A third baseman Taylor Green or Class AA outfielder Michael Brantley, LaPorta's teammate at Class AA Huntsville, as the second player in the trade, it seems a deal could be struck.

The Indians would also get a third player.

Right now it's a four-team race for Sabathia with the Brewers leading the way followed by the Dodgers, Philadelphia and Tampa Bay.

If the Dodgers can improve on their center piece to the trade, they might land the 6-7 left-hander. Right now, the Indians like the second and third players the Dodgers have offered more than auxiliary pieces they've been offered from the Brewers.

The Phillies, who think Sabathia can pitch them deep into the postseason this year, are offering several prospects, but they're all in the lower minors. Among the players the Phillies are offering are second baseman Adrian Cardenas and left-hander Antonio Bastardo.

The Devil Rays have several prospects that interest the Indians, but they have not jumped into the bidding with gusto. They do have a scout watching the Indians play the Twins."

Also, a poster on the Brewers.com message board is reporting Shapiro has said "take it or leave it" to this deal which was just reported on Cleveland radio stations supposedly. Brantley certainly doesn't make me say no to the deal:

LaPorta

Green

Brantley

for CC

Edit: Removed link to Cleveland.com story a TooLiveBrew beat me.

So, the Plain Dealer makes it sound like the Brewers AREN't offering Green, otherwise the deal would be done?

And CBS confirms with Rosenthal that the Dodgers are out, but the Plain Dealer says the Tribe likes the Dodgers' 2nd/3rd prospects better than the Brewers- which is right? So much information out there that's opposite....

Also in that linked blog, it sounds like the Jays are offering A.J. Burnett for Esco or Hardy....interesting. If you really wanted to go for it, get CC, and Burnett to go with Bush, Sheets and Soup. Make Manny your long man, and that should put you into the postseason.

Doug needs to hold firm and not accept what Shapiro is trying to squeeze out of him. The deal we have offered is too much as it now stands and sweetening it makes it even worse in my opinion. All of this for two months of Sabathia.

All of this for two months of Sabathia.

I think it's unfair to sell it as two months. Almost three full months of regular season play and hopefully another couple weeks of post season.

LaPorta, Green, and Brantley for CC makes me say no!! The Brewers would be giving up way to much for a couple months. I think LaPorta and Green is too much. Especially if the Brewers don't think Gamel will make it at 3rd. Green is the next option at 3rd.

The only way I like this trade is if the Brewers are committed to signing CC and Sheets at the end of the season. Because if they are not the Brewers don't have starters and they don't have much to trade to get starters in the off season.

Just think if the Brewers are committed to signing CC and Sheets, they would have Sheets(RHP), CC(LHP), Gallardo(RHP), Parra(LHP), then Suppan,Busch,McClung to fight for 5th. Possibly moving Busch and McClung back to the pen. If they are thinking longterm along those lines then I am very excited about the future. If CC is a rental the Brewers go back to being below average after the season, would not be excited about that.
