The CC Sabathia thread: Latest - CC a Brewer! (part 3)

Rosenthal's latest has the Dodgers completely out of the chase for Sabathia, and speculates that the Brewers may be nearing a trade.

http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/story/8318218/Dodgers-out-of-mix-for-Sabathia,-Brewers-close?

The article indicates that the Rays are involved but aren't expected to match what the Brewers are offering? You would think the Rays may ante up.....

They certainly have the ability to do so, but reportedly they're more interested in grabbing a bat and would prefer to make a big offer for that. I think their interest in CC is just passive, but that's JMO.

I have to say Brewcrewin07, I pretty much feel the opposite of you. I was hoping Phillips' report was right, however unlikely that is, because I don't want to give up LaPorta for three months of C.C.

Stevo we seem to be the only ones who think we are getting hosed giving up LaPorta. I would only do this deal if we dont have to give up any elite prospects. I really hope we move on to plan B and not give up the future. We can make the playoffs without Sabathia and I have no idea why Doug seems so desperate when no other teams are offering anyone near the caliber of LaPorta.

I don't "want" to give up LaPorta, and I think the price being offered is too steep to pay, but on the other hand, you know what they say about striking when the iron's hot. This is as good a chance as they've had.

Getting Sabathia isn't just about getting a good starter for 15 starts in the regular season, it sets up the rotation for any possible playoff series as well.

I'll take Sheets/CC/Suppan over most any other top 3 out there right now. I don't want to just see these guys make the postseason, I want them to have a chance to win.

I do not think anyone wants to give up LaPorta. Also, I would like to know what you mean by "give up the future"? Are you trying to indicate that without LaPorta the Brewers future is shot? Right now we have Braun in left for another 8 years and Hart in right and hopefully we can lock him up in a long term deal. We also have Fielder at 1st and if he is traded we have Gamel who will probably have to move over to 1st. Our future is still bright with or without LaPorta. The positions he plays are filled with good young players. The thing that really hurts is once we get rid of him we no longer have a piece of his value to trade for another pitcher who would be here for awhile. Also, it is not just about making the playoffs. It is also about winning the world series.

Connecting the dots, I'm thinking maybe the Brewers deadline was midnight last night. At that point our offer decreased significantly and LaPorta was taken off the table. Cleveland simply wasn't ready to pull the trigger yesterday and that's how we got reports today that the deal would be done if LaPorta was available. Not that he ever wasn't, just that he wasn't available as of this morning. Now perhaps Cleveland is inching closer to accepting our original offer and looking for Doug to put it back out there.

When BA said there was "an announcement coming shortly over the PA" (I missed that he said it was about the ASG), I literally got goosebumps thinking it was about a trade for Sabathia. Guess I'm pretty anxious, huh?

If Melvin is holding up this deal because he wont include LaPorta, I'll be very disappointed. If indeed if was LaPorta, Green, and Cain, I'd do that in a heartbeat b/c LaPorta is the only one that can be considered as close to a sure thing as possible. Plus, theres nothing LaPorta can do, offensively or defensively, that Gamel cant do. LaPorta will be nothing more than an average outfielder, maybe above average as a firstbasemen. Gamel could be average at those two positions. Plus Gamel is lefthanded. Even though LaPorta is our top prospect, I think his loss wouldnt kill the longterm future of the system. Melvin has to do something to address his glut of outfielders, with Braun, Hart, LaPorta, Cain, Gwynn, probably Gamel, Brantly and Gillespie. And I prefer them not to do it by letting Hart walk away. He needs to be resigned.

Does anyone else find it odd that Brian Anderson mentioned something about "this could be a big day of news" for the Brewers. Right after Braun was announced as the All Star starter?? It's almost like he knows something is coming, but can't say anything yet.

They've also flashed a graphic of Sabathia on the screen, and discussed his stats on the season, etc. Obviously, nobody in Milwaukee is trying to keep a secret, regardless of whether CC actually lands here or not.

I don't think he tipped any cards there...it could indeed be a big day of news, we all know that.

That said, it will be interesting if the deal goes down how and when they'll announce it. Do they let Braun and Sheets have their post-game spotlights for their AS nods and announce it later tonight?

I agree. Plus, they are showing pictures and stats of CC and mentioning how great it would be to have him and Sheets in the same rotation. It just seems odd to see TV broadcast fueling the speculation.

I am with you.. when he said "it is official" I thought it was sabathia even though they had been talking about all-stars..

It sounds like we'll found out by the end of today whether or not Sabathia is coming here. Since Cleveland is in Minnesota, it wouldn't take long for Sabathia to get here. However, I'm sure the Brewers would like to have Sabathia on the club by tomorrow so they could have a press conference the day before he pitches.

As far as whether LaPorta is part of the deal or not. Most of the sources have mentioned LaPorta as the centerpiece of the deal, while Steve Phillips seems to be the only one at the moment stating otherwise. I tend to believe Haudricourt in this case as well due to the fact that he's about the only media member talking directly to Melvin. I guess it's possible that other team sources are the ones talking about what players are being offered.

It seems like usually the key players in a big trade are known and it's the other players that will differ than what is being reported.

For those of you who don't think CC is needed I present Exhibit 1: Suppan's start today..

Yeah, they kind of need to get CC, and then get a second starter, to replace whichever pitcher implodes next between Bush and McClung.

I know what you mean, and I'm not just trying to argue semantics, but all you need to do is make the playoffs and you have a chance to win the whole thing. Sheets-C.C. sure does stack up well in the playoffs, but I think the Brewers will make the playoffs with or without him. I'd rather not give up a huge piece when that's the case.

Hey, everyone, I'm still finding the need to edit quotes that are nested or too long. If you haven't read them, once again, here are the quote guidelines. For future reference, they're on the top of most board pages. Note too, that not every problematic quote has necessarily been edited.

On the other hand, there are a couple of "fixed code" notations. Mods don't mind giving a helping hand with the post editor causes goofiness. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif

That’s the only thing Chicago’s good for: to tell people where Wisconsin is.
