The CC Sabathia thread: Latest - CC a Brewer! (part 3)

I'm thinking the rejected report simply comes from the offer being made two days ago and still not accepted. I don't think its necessarily rejected, just the Indians stupidly trying to make it seem like it will take another piece, but could (and should) jump on it yet by the end of today.

DM went all in to get it done ASAP, Sharpiro. This offer isn't a point to start negotiating from.

I sure hope the report isn't true. After all the talk, all the rumors, to not get CC would be awfully frustrating and depressing.

One of the rules in investing or in this case trading for a player is you can not get emotionally attached. That leads you to give up more than it is worth. If they do not want to give up CC for what we offered (what it is worth to us), than move on. All this means is we still have the pieces to either keep or use in the future for a different player who will be around longer.

That's true- but that's what Melvin and co. should be following, not necessarily the fan base. Of course we're going to be disappointed at this point- a lot of people have been checking this thread and various sources around the web by the minute most of the weekend.

I agree Peavey, I am just saying that if it doesn't work out nobody should be upset at Melvin for not making it work (not saying anyone is or would). IMO right now Cleveland is looking for someone to overpay and IMO that is not worth it.

Well maybe Matt LaPorta isn't or wasn't offered anyways. A buddy just emailed me saying Steve Phillips on SportsCenter just kinda stated that Matt LaPorta not being offered is what is holding the deal up? What in the world is going on?

The world will continue to turn if Sabathia doesn't end up a Brewer. All that means is that there are more assets available to aquire longterm solutions over the winter. None of the others pitchers out there currently are as valuable as CC, though I'm not exactly excited by the names that are out there either. Maddux would be alright be he's inexpensive, but I don't really want the other guys including Bedard and Burnett.

I do think CC is the best available pitcher to help the Brewers win the WS, but I'm glad that Melvin is standing firm. If some other team now knows that LaPorta is available for the right package, and we get someone that will improve this year's rotation as well as being in the rotation next year, that would be good as well.

I heard what Phillips had to say as well and he made it seem like Cleveland was waiting for Laporta to be offered to accept. It also sounded like Phillips didn't really know what he was talking about and was just saying something just to say something.

The other trade proposal I read from Olney was CC for Laporta + Hardy, which doesn't make a whole lot of sense considering we're making a win-now move, but trading a guy who's en fuego at the plate. I wouldn't part with Escobar and Laporta. Escobar has more value to the Brewers than the Indians probably, because our biggest question might be up the middle. Soon it will be time to abandon all hope for Weeks and Escobar would be a candidate to make the conversion and replace him. The Brewers scout/develop better arguably than anyone in baseball. A top prospect in our system has more value than one on, say, the Cubs. Laporta and a mid-level guy should theoretically be enough for Chocolate Chunk. Laporta will make an impact for 7-8 years for the Indians, while we'll reap the benefits of CC for 1/2. I understand the market is driving up his price, but the second prospect/player in the deal should be one living solely off great potential at best, i.e.: Weeks, Rogers, etc.; or a mid-level guy like Gillespie.

Again, I didn't hear anything about the Sabathia deal on ESPN Radio's 'Sportscenter' 20/40 update- if they're getting the stuff about the offer from Steve Phillips, then I put less credibility on that report than the one supposedly from AM1100.

I am only speculating. You never know if Doug Melvin might want another minor leaguer to come our way (just to even out things more)

Who knows if there are more players involved in this deal.
