The Combined 'We're Trading Greinke' Thread (part 3)

I feel as though some on this board think Doug is a big dummy who has no idea what he is doing so they have braced themselves for a terrible trade.

It's not that we think Melvin doesn't know what he is doing, it's that we question why he is doing it. There are many different ways he can go here. He seems intent on trying to compete again 2013. I personally think he'd be better off shooting for 2014. Some of the moves you are going to make to try to compete in 2013 are different than moves you'd make to compete in 2014.

It has nothing to do with the fact that CC and Prince are so much better, it has to do with today's market and the demand for starting pitching. It's a pitchers league now a days. FA ace pitchers can and will rake it in. Zack will get overpaid due to the current market.

I agree I'm glad the Brewers won't be the team overpaying, but I also get why he will be overpaid.

If Dempster doesn't block the trade and he goes to ATL, the Cubs get Delgado. Now, there's a lot of different top 100 prospect lists, and most of them differ from each other, but Delgado is a top 50 prospect on every list, and a top 20 prospect on a lot of lists as well. That's a good deal for the Cubs.

The fish got Jacob Turner in return for Anibal Sanchez and Omar Infante. Turner, like Delgado, is a top 20 prospect in most lists, and at least a top 40 prospect in all of them.

I hope the Brewers get AT LEAST a top 40 prospect for Greinke, going off of what has gone down so far. Personally, I'd be all about throwing in a Maldanado or something similar with Greinke for a top 10 prospect like Profar, but that's probably wishful thinking/pipe dream.

Rendon is not even close to being major league ready. He's had all of 16 at bats this year. With his recent injury history I'd pass. Detwiler is in their rotation and has an ERA of 3.01. I doubt they'd give him up now. I'm not sure who I'd want from Washington.

if we some how got Rendon i'd be 11110% okay with Greinke leaving.

The Texas/Milwaukee connection for Greinke at this point makes way too much sense to not happen. Both sides have motive, both sides have what the other needs.

I completely agree. Lewis going down for the year seems like the confirmation this needs to happen. The best part of that is that the Angels see this too so maybe they are willing to overpay to help themselves and keep him from Texas.

I hope Doug does whatever it takes to get Profar.

If it takes more than Greinke, fine.

What else do they need? Their team is better at almost every position. We could give up a corner OF minor league prospect or maybe they would want Gomez as a defensive replacement and pinch runner

He's arguably the top prospect out there.

The Rangers keep saying they refuse to deal him because of that, but we shall see.

Either way, it's going to take more than a 2 month rental to get him.

I'm thinking Greinke, Maldanado, and a minor leaguer or two.

Agreed. Especially now with Lewis going down. As others have stated, I think it will only take a few innings from Greinke tonight to solidify in other GM's minds that he's not injured. It wouldn't surprise me to see him pulled early and traded tonight somewhere.

I was actually just going to ask about the possibility that Greinke only throws 3 or 4 innings tonight. If he is sharp early on I agree that he could have a short-lived outing. It will be fun to follow everything tonight

I'd want Rendon and Alex Meyer for Greinke from the Nats. I would use our competitive balance pick if necessary to push the deal through.

I've seen the list before. Important to keep in mind FA isn't the only way to add a SP. They can swing a trade in the off-season, and have plenty of chips to play if they find the right trading partner. ARam, Hart, and Weeks just to name a few.

We have Gallardo and Fiers penciled in. Even Estrada really, would have no problem with him in the rotation at this point. Then you can sign a Marcum (or equivalent) or trade for a SP. Either way, that leaves one or two posts for Thornburg, Peralta, Burgos, Rogers, etc. I imagine once Greinke gets traded, they can take a longer look at one of these guys. Come September, you can shut down Wolf and get a few starts from another one of these guys. That should help get a feel for who can be added to the rotation or not.

Honestly, even if Greinke was signed this team's future success is tied to how many of their pitching prospects can be solid members of the rotation and bullpen. And one step further, they need a couple of them to be studs.
