The Combined 'We're Trading Greinke' Thread (part 3)

I have been waiting for the Dodgers to emerge as a real contender for Greinke. I would imagine they would be interested in Greinke and Aramis as a combo but I am not sure they have the system to pull that off. I would be willing to do a Grienke & Aramis for Zach Lee, Dee Gordon & Allen Webster.

If the buying team wants him to start Sunday than the trade probably needs to be done on Friday I would guess. I am putting my money on tomorrow.

The rumor mill seems to be really hot this year with a lot of deals getting done; I don't think DM will wait around if he gets a deal he likes

B2k1121 - there are plenty of national reporters (Buster Olney, John Heyman, Ken Rosenthal) talking about it. Not just some blogger. I posted the blogger cause he summed it up best.

I'm not sure any of those reporters have even suggested that the two teams have talked, much less that a deal is basically done. Though if it's true that Texas would offer Olt, Miami will probably be very interested.

I hope Melvin waits this out, the deadline is still a week away yet. No need to rush into a deal today. I wouldn't let Greinke pitch again for the Brewers, but I'd make sure I field all possible offers and the longer we hold out, the better the chance someone gives up more for him. IMO.

I see it differently. Hang onto him and the demand is reduced as the main suitors for SP sign others.

Wait until the deadline and Melvin has almost no leverage. Every GM in baseball knows that he has no incentive to hang onto Greinke, as we're not a playoff team and Greinke hasn't accepted our offers to re-sign.

You don't need to take the first offer that comes your way, but I wouldn't pass up a really good one. Teams have other options than Greinke right now.

For the Rangers, it's gotta be Olt and an arm.
will never happen.

The Rangers didn't want to give up Olt for Greinke, and are only giving up Olt for Johnson because they can control Johnson in 2013.

Have the Rangers specifically said they wouldn't give up Olt for Greinke? I don't remember ever seeing anything that said they wouldn't. I wouldn't be surprised if they won't, but that could change in an instant based on circumstances -- Johnson gets traded to the Dodgers, etc.

No, it's not.

It's been reported, and it fits both teams needs.

You still haven't said where you saw this "reported."

I did, USA Today, Nightengale did, but only as far as saying that Marlins have put Johnson out, and now that Hamels is locked up, Rangers made it known they'd be willing to part with Olt.

"The Cubs now plan to keep Dempster and make him a qualifying offer after the season, ESPN.com's Buster Olney tweets. Doing so would allow the Cubs to collect a compensatory draft pick in 2013."

Fine by me. The less pitchers on the market, the better, and this will definitely increase the Dodger's interest in Greinke.

I dont get the Josh Johnson trade for Texas. He actually hasnt been that great this year, he is an injury risk, and Olt is a top end prospect. I know Johnson is controlled for next year but he has only had 3 seasons of over 150 innings. His durability is a huge question mark

Johnson is a Ranger.

There's a big difference on something being reported as possibility, and something being a done deal.

Dempster "was a Brave" yesterday, but now he's not (I would know, I made the mistake of starting that thread). That was a lot closer to happening than "Johnson is a Ranger" right now.

He was one of the best pitchers in baseball prior to last year.

Durability is a question mark, but ability certainly isn't. I think the big X-factor for the Rangers would be having him next year as well. The Ranger's clearly prefer to do something with more than 2012 in mind, and I can't blame them. I hate rentals for the Brewers, personally.

I am not denying Johnson was great those two years but there are serious question marks going forward including injury and is his stuff what it was pre-injury

And I do understand the value of the extra year. So I see why they would look into but they were willing to trade for Hamels according to pretty much everyone and he was a rental

I see your point, but remember the pressure will be on contenders at the deadline to do something. So while they may know Melvin "has to" trade Greinke, they have pressure to add a stud to their rotation. With Hamels and Dempster off the screen, Greinke is the clear and obvious choice for teams looking for a starter- and there's more than one. We haven't even heard about teams like the Orioles, Nats, etc. who may be under the radar.

With all that, yea you still have to pull the trigger at some point if you get a deal you really love. Then go to the other teams and let them know you're pulling the trigger in the next hour unless they sweeten the pot.

It's impossible for you to know if those things are true or not unless the Rangers flat out say it. Most of what you read from writers are guesses, what they think fits, and second hand rumors. The majority of trades occur with 0 rumors surrounding them. We didn't hear days worth of the Dodgers and Marlins discussing the value of Hanley Ramirez through the media.

With all the Olt stuff that has been flying around I want to bring up a player (or two)I really like from the Red Sox as a possible return. Jackie Bradley Jr., a cf that played for 2 NCAA titles in a row for South Carolina is currently in AA after starting in A ball this year and is hitting .341 combined at the 2 levels while hitting 36 doubles, 6 homers and swiping 22 bases in 367 at bats while playing a premium position. If we could swing him and Jacob Barnes in a Greinke deal I would be extremely happy. Barnes is in Hi-A but has destroyed both levels so far.
