The Combined 'We're Trading Greinke' Thread (part 4)

Well it would all depend on who else is going to TEX. A reliever who cares they all suck; it just depends on who the position player would be. TEX doesn't have a whole lot of needs there

Exactly. Who would we give them? Hart is one of the few guys with a lot of value but where does he fit in Texas?

OK, so the Rangers are hesitant to part with Olt, but they are in for moving their All-Star shortstop down the stretch of a pennant race. I'm not buying what that blog is selling.

They may feel Profar is ready and just call him up. If they made the deal, they probably feel what they are getting will help them a lot and is worth any drop-off from Andrus to Profar. It's been rumored for awhile that they would look to deal Andrus once Profar was ready. They really want a World Series title this year before Hamilton hits free agency.

In thinking about Andrus' only having two years left, we should also consider that he's a guy we could realistically hope to resign. He isn't Prince Fielder or Zack Greinke. He could turn into Jose Reyes, I suppose, but even then we'd have some chance.

I have no idea how much stock to put in this, but I agree with TLB that the blog post seems very prudent and cautious. It's a fun possibility to think about, anyway, and it would make some sense for both teams. We probably should have thought of it earlier!

If we get Andrus and a quality SP prospect like possibly Grimm, I would be ecstatic. Not gonna get my hopes up though.

Everyone here needs to repeat the bolded part as mantra for the next few days -- at least, I know I will. There will probably be at least a couple more OMGOMGOMG type rumors before ZG is actually moved. Curse you, internets!

Just wanted to add that, if this is actually the deal that winds up happening... that would be some pair of cojones on Jon Daniels. There really isn't much to dislike or not envy about that Rangers organization right now. Bold.

Andrus has rebuffed Texas' attempts to sign him. He has Scott Boras. If they trade for Andrus, they'll be shopping him a year or two from now anyway.

Andrus is great, but they should be going for longer-term solutions.

If the Andrus rumor turns out to be bogus, I apologize now for stirring up the board. Having taken a moment to think about it, I find it hard to believe Texas would gamble on Prufar seamlessly stepping in and providing above-average ss production in the middle of a playoff run.

Yeah, someone on Twitter pointed out that Andrus may be destined to be Derek Jeter's successor. We've seen how well trying to re-sign Boras clients works out in Milwaukee.

I am guessing TEX has only tried to resign him half heartedly. I mean when you have someone like Profar right behind Andrus I wouldn't be in a hurry to offer big money to Andrus. That being said he would demand a huge raise if he were to sign an extension.

He's pretty credible, BUT I believe he only has like one source who works internally with the Brewers, and who knows how privy that guy really is. I don't think he has as many tentacles in the organization as an established beat guy would, but he has one or two that he gets info from. I have to believe Texas really wants Greinke though, and that's prompting Melvin to do whatever possible to get a SS from them. Grimm has been heavily scouted by the Crew-- as indicated by multiple other sources including the Prince of Darkness himself (who rarely posts 'rumor mill' type things), and I wouldn't be surprised if he was expendable to the Rangers.

However if the Brewers include Hart (to play 1B) they NEED to get Andrus, and Perez. Hart is far too valuable for Grimm and a RP.

Talent-wise, obviously I'd love Andrus. But what scares me is that he'd be exactly the type of player I'd expect Melvin to want, and it fits with his patching from year-to-year m.o.

Also, I think the over/under on this thread should be set at 100 pages.

DM says on the record that Greinke WILL be traded before the deadline:

It isn't like we didn't know this, but when has DM ever said anything this blunt in the press? Usually he'll deny a trade until right before the ink dries. It makes me think a deal is all but done.

Also -- "He's been like a son to me." That is an interesting interview.

I didn't think there was a lick of this being true till I read the following...

If Oldcity is right, then it makes plenty of sense for the Rangers to do this.

The last sentence is the key part to me -- if you're Elvis Andrus, and will be coming off your age-25 season as a FA SS, and Cole Hamels just got north of $140M, how excited to sign a team-friendly contract would you be?

DM says on the record that Greinke WILL be traded before the deadline:

He'll be gone by Saturday is my guess. That one extra start (iirc Sunday is his next turn in the rotation) will be huge to whichever team buys him, and I'm betting the Brewers don't want to take one more chance -- however small -- at risking an injury to ZG.

That's still two years away though. I don't think Melvin is necessarily worried about that much. Maybe one of the Brewers own farmhands will be ready by 2015 if Andrus was unwilling to sign. Maybe he'd become a stud in the NL Central hitter friendly parks and the Crew would trade him for more again? Plus, if they get let's say Perez for including Hart in the deal, is that not worth it? 4+ years of Perez and 2+ years of Andrus for a rental and a year+ of Hart.

I initially glossed over your post after the link, but you make a great point on Melvin. And I agree that it's an interesting read. Pretty candid stuff from DM.

It is certainly in Doug Melvin's and Mark A's M.O. to try to make sure the Brewers are a contender in 2013, no matter how legit that might seem, that is how they've gone about things year in and year out.

Mark A has gotta be freaking out a little about being sellers this year and is probably pressuring Doug to make sure and get players for 2013.

I have seen zero evidence that the Brewers organization has a long-term plan that would include building up a roster of top prospects. So, in that sense, the Elvis Andrus rumor has some credibility to it. Same with the Ervin Santana talk (if Santana was added to Segura).... I don't like it but it will actually shock me a little if we DO get a top prospect that we can control for 6 years

C'mon, Doug, surprise me, I double dog dare ya

Exactly. This fits Melvin's "don't rebuild, reload" approach to player acquisition. Which is hard for a small market team to pull off, and probably impossible long-term, but it sure keeps things exciting. If this happened there'd be a new 2-year window to compete. Hopefully some of our young arms will contribute within that window but I'd still expect Melvin to attempt to shore up the rotation in FA this off-season. I even wouldn't put it past him to deal prospects again to fill holes.
