The Combined 'We're Trading Greinke' Thread (part 4)

I have a bad feeling if we trade with the Angels, Ervin Santana will be one of the pieces involved.

He's only under contract through next year, at a cost of $13M. There is zero chance he's part of a deal, or at the very least he would be one of multiple pieces (and not nearly the feature one).

I think people here greatly undervalue Zack by thinking we have to do 3 players just for Profar. He hasnt proven a thing. The world is littered with AAAA players. Guys who dominate AAA but cant cut it in majors

That's dismissive of Profar to the point of it being a fault.

The world isn't "littered" with 19 year olds who are able to do what he's done at AA, and find me a single scouting report on him that doesn't gush about him. You know who was 19 once & awesome at baseball? Every great player who's ever played.

I understand it's easier to just dismiss "prospects", but the reality is that they're all just baseball players. And Profar is a damn good one.

Great post. You put the point very, very well.

All this talk about "prospects" and whether they "pan out" presumes that those terms have concrete meanings, and they don't. Prospect lists are just attempts to predict which players will likely succeed in MLB. Some players on those lists fail, some end up as role-players, some as regulars, and some as stars. Why should that surprise us? Look at the number of MLB veterans, at different age levels, who break out, or drop off, or get hurt. Baseball performance is just volatile.

If you look at what a player does in minor league baseball, measured by stats and scouting reports, and you make appropriate adjustments for level of competition and developmental patterns evident from past players, you can get about as good a sense of how a player will perform going forward as you can get from the same information at the MLB level.

Let's sober up and assume Profar is off the table, as the Brewers would have to throw in a lot more for him. Who is the next best option?

Teheren?

Of players I could feasibly see coming back for just Greinke....Teheran is the best pitching prospect and olt the best hitting prospect.

I could see Melvin liking Ervin Santana, because of his bizarre enthusiasm for slightly above average "proven" MLB pitchers, but Santana wouldn't be a main piece of the trade, since he's only under contract through 2013

Depending on what lists you look at (admittedly, there's hundreds of different prospect lists), Segura and Perez aren't even top 50 prospects, so I'd assume those guys would be part of a package. Delgado as well.

Bob Nightengale @BNightengale

The #Angels were rebuffed by the #Rays in their pursuit of James Shields, offering speedy OF Peter Bourjos, but the Rays want more in return

The Angels offere... what? I'm starting to believe that Bob Nightengale doesn't know what he's talking about, because that offer is just... wow. Bad.

Well it sure sounds like it would be a rather big deal. Getting Elvis Andrus would be pretty exciting. I would withold judgment until we know what the other pieces are. If we are giving up a reliever and a good position player I hope we might be getting a little more than Andrus; but who knows.

EDIT: Didn't notice that the Crew would also get a significant SP prospect; that probably means a significant position player is also heading there. I don't know what TEX would need at the MLB level for position players though? Outfield?

I'd take a guy like Santana back if they needed us to offset Zach's salary, but not as a key part of a deal. He's been miserable this year, but he's a year removed from some great numbers and could be useful in 2013 if we wanted.

Why would anyone who's watched him play want Peter Bourjos? He's a poor man's Carlos Gomez (fast, good glove but can't hit), though I guarantee if given a year of full time play, he could lead the league in 1-3 grounders. Not sure how he has much value, though it's obvious why the Angels keep dangling him in deals.

No idea about the accuracy of his sources, but this could be big:

I quoted your post, as opposed to Invader's, because I wanted to address the 'accuracy' angle. All I wanted to say on that is how much I appreciated the author going out of his way to hammer home the message that this is not anything certain. I actually chuckled when I saw he maxed out, basically, what he could do to text with the words "rumored" and "implied". Nice to see a high level of caution & care from this guy, obviously just some schmo living in his parents' basement, like all Bloggers™.

If this proves true -- IF -- I torn about the idea of getting two seasons of Andrus. On the one hand, nice -- two years of Andrus for a couple months of Greinke. On the other hand, that's a classic Melvin-the-patcher type of move, and I'd rather see a headline player that is a longer-term solution. However, I'm also not totally sold on Jean Segura (LAA), and it seems obvious that both Profar & Machado (BAL) aren't available for Greinke. So I might prefer Olt then over Andrus, but this is certainly exciting. Once I got over the bummer that was Greinke not re-signing with the Brewers, I've been waiting for this process. I'm excited about the Brewers again!

If that becomes legit (big if), Andrus would be a big, big get for the Brewers. I don't think any of us care what reliever is included, and I'm assuming the bat would be someone we've already talked about trading here....
