The Combined 'We're Trading Greinke' Thread (part 4)

Hellweg - Typically, a pitcher moves from the rotation to the bullpen and takes off. For Hellweg, it was just the opposite. The tall, lanky right-hander had put up good strikeout rates as a reliever, but had really struggled throwing strikes consistently. When he was really scuffling in 2011 out of the bullpen, he moved into a starting role and posted a 2.12 ERA in 14 starts. He still got more than enough swings and misses with his plus fastball and good breaking stuff. If the changeup improves along with his command, he has the makings of a frontline starter.

Segura?? The #78 prospect?? Doug got bent over in this one. You have one of the top 10 Pitchers in all of baseball, and you can't get minimum of a top #50 prospect?? probably more realistically a top #25 prospect?? Terrible deal. None of these guys help the Brewers win games NEXT year.

1) Segura was on the BA midseason top 50, so he is a top 50 prospect.

2) They're getting Greinke for like 10 starts...

So?? You have an asset...isn't it your responsibility to get maximum value for that asset?? Otherwise why give up the asset?? You never know what could happen.

Sickels has him at #78 in his most recent update. Was #66.

And who says Zach won't sign an extension with Anaheim??

I would have asked for Trout or told them to get bent. I will take the one pick at the end of the year. Why settle for anything less then what you REALLY should get??

cool story. enjoy your draft pick.

The Brewer Nation ‏@BrewerNation

Multiple people beginning to confirm the @Ken_Rosenthal & @jonmorosi report. @Sullivan_Ranger said the #Brewers asked for Olt, Texas balked.

Well, then I guess Texas didn't want Greinke as bad as I thought... Bet it really frosts them that the Angels are getting him, they will now probably offer the fricking moon for Johnson or Dempster just to keep up to the Angels new aquisition.

BA Preseason Top 10 for Angels

#2 Jean Segura (behind Trout)

#4 Johnny Hellweg

#9 Ariel Pena

In terms of tools, Johnny Hellweg was given Best Fastball and Best Curveball in the system, Ariel Pena was given Best Slider

Jeff Passan summed it up well in a tweet:

Brewers traded Escobar, Odorizzi, Cain & Jeffress for 1 1/2 years of Greinke, Segura, Hellweg & Pena.

We'll see.

I'm pretty content with that, given last year's results.

Mike Olts are easy to buy...

Ummmmm, well, ok, forget it...

Corner IF/OF with power? Not saying Mike Olt couldn't turn into a superstar, but in general his skillset is easier to buy through free agency.

Assuming you have the inclination to be buyers, or have the money to spend on a slugger like that. We couldn't keep Prince...

Thinking Olt will turn into Prince is extremely optimistic though. More realistic ceiling is somebody like... A-Ram.

I'm just saying that slugger talent isn't as easy to find, or buy as you say...

Way easier than starting-caliber SS. Check free agency any given year, lots of above-average 1B/3B/LF/RF.

Wow, really?? I don't think the Angels would give us Trout for Braun.

How do any of these guys help the Brewers win games NEXT year?? or even two years from now?? I do NOT want to lose for two years.

Segura will likely be our starting SS next year, and he will be better than Izturis/Ransom. And cheaper than a guy like Alex Gonzalez. Hellweg and Pena will both likely get invited to spring training, and could be a midseason callup. Both should be on the team in 2014. Zack Greinke is not going to be on the Brewers in 2013 or 2014 unless he is signed in the offseason....so even if it's just Segura next year, the Brewers are better in 2013 than they would have been an hour ago. Not to mention that ideally Segura will be helping the team win games at a very difficult position to fill for the next 5-6 years (and cheaply too).

keep demanding mike trout though.

I do mean to offend when I say this, but who really cares?

The issue here is about getting better value than a comp pick, that's it, and preferably acquiring the best talent available. Segura isn't going to be a defensive wizard but I'll curious to see what he does both with the bat and at the plate, both AA pitchers have upside I'd put them on the same level as Peralta from a prospect perspective.

If true this is like only 3rd trade Melvin has ever made that I actually like.

Segura will be better than Ransom or Izturis and cheaper than trying to sign a FA SS. So he will help.

The two young arms give us a lot of talent in AA and AAA or in the majors next year. Next year we will have Nelson, Jungmann, Peralta Rogers, Thornburg, Burgos and Fiers and now the two arms from the Angels. That is a lot of young talent and we have guys like Bucci and Scarpetta coming off injuries

I am not arguing that finding a SS is harder than finding a slugger. Whatever, I'm done with this. We just got a SS, and I like it!

If the Brewers can't sign Greinke, they are now in better position to trade for another established starter. They've added depth to the upper level starting pitching, and a lot of teams covet those guys.

I'm not overly excited about Segura. He should be okay.

Every single one of them unproven, and could be total busts.
