The Combined 'We're Trading Greinke' Thread (part 4)

Nightengale reporting Rangers "still heavily involved" in Johnson talks.

I thought he was a done deal to the Rangers yesterday Someone is going to end up with Johnson and someone will end up with Greinke. If Johnson goes to the Rangers the Angels will almost be forced to get Greinke

But I'm also reading that Texas wants an outfielder AND if they trade for Greinke they want another piece that's at least signed past this year to even it out. That was on MLBtraderumors via a Texas beat writer. That coincides with the most recent report from Brewer Nation which is the package he heard was Greinke and Hart for Andrus and Perez. I'd prefer Profar and Grimm in that scenario but the former isn't bad either.

If Texas wants another player that they can hold onto past this season, why not include Corey Hart? Hart and Greinke carry easily the highest trade value and would bring back the most. Even if this still doesn't net Profar, how about Greinke, Hart, and a lower level prospect like Max Walla or Nick Ramirez. In return we get Olt, Perez, Leonys Martin and either Grimm or Buckel?

This allows us to move both Gomez and Morgan in the offseason. Schafer, Martin, and Aoki can hold down the RF and CF spots. Olt can stay at third in Nashville next year then move to first if Gamel struggles. Perez and Grimm immediately compete for rotation spots with Fiers, Rogers, Peralta, Thornburg Estrada and maybe Narveson. This would also free up a ton of money (having lost the contracts of Greinke, Wolf, Marcum, Morgan, Hart, Gomez, and KRod) to rebuild the bullpen.

It might take a year for all the young guys to get some experience but it would be a heck of a start in rebuilding this franchise would it not?

Greinke is an Angel is what I'm hearing. I imagine it will be announced shortly. No idea on the return...

Not seeing this anywhere. [sarcasm]Sounds like another done deal.[/sarcasm]

I didn't see this before but if Melvin makes this trade he should be fired. Trade your two best pieces for an expensive shortstop who is only under control for 2 more years and one prospect? This has always been my biggest fear of Melvin trading Greinke: Acquiring players to patch together another .500ish team in 2013.

You should see it shortly. My source is pretty reliable. Not trying to create a frenzy. Just passing on what I heard from someone that would know.

Yeah it probably is....

Doesn't really matter what any of us think he is worth....we will find out soon....Melvin will take the best offer.

A friend asked me: Segura/Richards for Zack or Olt/Sardinas/Grimm for Zack/Hart

Olt/Sardinas/Grimm for Greinke alone isn't unrealistic.

I better not have to return this Brewers' Andrus jersey!

Not just “at Night” anymore.

Ok, becoming more interesting!

Hopefully Segura is included (and Bourjos not) if true.

Im probably one of the few here that does trust DM still in this situation. Too bad Marcum injury and Krod, Loe, Parra et al... all blew up. Imagine what could have been done in trades or standings.

Interesting tidbits from MLB trade rumors:

If the Rangers do acquire Greinke from the Brewers, MLB.com's T.R. Sullivan speculates that Texas would want a second player back in the deal, "to at least have something to show for it beyond 2012" if Greinke leaves via free agency. Such a second player could be a prospect or bench depth, Sullivan guesses.

The Rangers are mainly focused on Zack Greinke and James Shields, but the odds of a trade involving Shields are diminishing because Evan Longoria is on his way back to the Rays’ lineup. [per Jayson Stark on ESPN]

*************************

Hamels, Cliff Lee, and Garza already off the market, Dempster has destroyed the Cubs' leverage, and Stark thinks (FWIW) that Shields is staying put. This seems like the best possible scenario for us. You want there to be somebody else available, so that multiple teams build up hope for improving their rotations. Unless the Rangers and Angels form a cartel to drive down the total price for Greinke and Johnson, we should do well.

As for the extra player to Texas thing, which is hardly surprising, I can't help thinking that the last time we did a deadline deal with them, the extra player was Nelson Cruz. In retrospect, I think that trade was DM's worst moment. Hardy for Gomez was bad and perfectly mistimed, but at least Hardy had to be traded again before he regained his All-Star form, and Gomez was a useful player in our run last year. But in the other deal, Cordero was a 1.5 year rental we didn't need, Nix is Carlos Gomez and didn't even get there 'til we dumped him, and Mench was a waste of oxygen. To get those guys for our prize trade chip, we threw in the best player in the trade, the best by far if you factor in salary. Horrible. If we send them Hart, at least we know his value (whether or not DM gets value for him).
