The Combined 'We're Trading Greinke' Thread (part 4)

I will confess that a small part of me wants to see what would happen on the forum if the trade deadline comes and goes and Greinke is still a Brewer.

A very small part of me.

I am going to start another thread suggesting Doug Melvin needs to be fired.

Jon Morosi @jonmorosi

#Angels remain very much involved in Zack Greinke talks at this hour, sources say.

Good. I realize a lot of this "Team X is in/out" stuff is spin, but I like this particular spin and am choosing to believe it portends great things.

The White Sox earlier this year became the first team to use eight rookie pitchers in one game, and collectively, they've had enough success to form a decent package. The best of the rookie pitchers may be Addison Reed, Jose Quintana, Hector Santiago and Nate Jones.

I hate you Jon Heyman.

Love how Haudricourt tries to speculate that the market may be dwindling for Zack, if anything it's heating up!!!!

TH really can be impressively bad when it comes to trade rumors

Which do you prefer...

Segura Richards Cowart from LA or Olt Grimm Odor from Texas

I realize we may have to sweeten the pot a bit for either package

I agree that both packages are overly optimistic, but I'll play anyway. I vote Angels. I think Grimm/Richards is close to a wash. Segura is much closer to the majors than Odor, but Odor might have more upside. Neither is a lock to stay at SS. From what I've read, Cowart is having a breakout season. Olt is closer to the bigs, but both look like studs. I guess Segura's proximity to the majors is what swayed me, but it is close.

I was thinking about mystery teams as well... with Longoria coming back, Tampa might think they're not out of the race. Greinke would be a huge upgrade over Alex Cobb. Don't know how the money would work, though.

Oakland is close to the playoff race as well, but have a solid rotation and again, may not have the payroll.

Detroit's starting pitching has been iffy. They came out of nowhere to sign Fielder... why not come out of nowhere to trade for Greinke?

The Reds... not the Reds. But they've only used five starters all year. Wonder if they can make it through the whole year.

Atleast Fiers has shown consistently good K/9 numbers throughout his MILB and MLB career. In terms of prospects; Fiers probably would have rated much higher than Quintana coming into this year.

And you are right; Melvin would be crazy to accept somebody at best the equivalent of Fiers as the centerpiece for Grienke

Except Quintana is considerably younger and left handed. Seriously though, he's walked 14 guys in 76 innings. If he'd been in the NL, he'd likely have 6-8 more K's too. Besides if strikeouts were a great measure of pitcher effectiveness, the Brewers would be contending as the are leading the league in K's. Pittsburgh meanwhile is 14th in K's and 5th in ERA. I agree he's more of a mid rotation type but those are pretty good numbers and in the AL to boot and no matter how small, he does have a major league record, and that is in his favor. I know the game he pitched against the Brewers he got some great defense to keep the Brewers off the board on some balls that were hit very well. That being said, he's pitched very well at home in a notorious pitchers park. I think the Sox could add a couple other "not quite" A prospects like a Carlos Sanchez, and maybe a major league reliever like a Nate Jones, and that's not a bad package.

Makes so much sense, it's terrifying. Melvin seems hell-bent on getting "MLB ready pitching" in return. For the life of me, I don't know why he would rather have another mediocre pitcher instead of a true top prospect at any position.

The dumb thing (if true about Melvin wanting "MLB ready pitching") is we actually have that on hand now between Thornburg, Peralta, Rogers (maybe), possibly Burgos, etc. The team can probably fill out the rotation next season with pitchers we already actually have, especially if Marcum can be brought back on a one year deal (which was hinted at by Haudricourt I think recently).

I really hope that DM doesn't settle for just 'a nice package'. Just because you get a lot of stuff doesn't mean that's a good thing - it's still just .. stuff.

I think those were my exact words last time I went to the Old Country Buffet.

Hey...we may be on to something. If Melvin does a deal like that, he will forever be called Doug "Golden Corral" Melvin.

I will be shocked if DM takes a package from CWS consisting off a bunch of those rookie pitchers if he really has a good prospect available to him from another club. And if the market for Grienke is crappy enough that no team will part with an actual good prospect; then just keep him and collect the comp pick.
