The Combined 'We're Trading Greinke' Thread (part 4)

You guys are nuts if you think Greinke will resign with the Brewers.

Just like a lot of you thought we were still in the race for the division a month ago.

Not a great way to introduce and endear yourself to other posters and the staff here.

Also, a quick refresher is apparently needed on fact vs opinion on the board:

A fact is an indisputable reality: For example, "Zach Greinke is a free agent after this year"

An opinion is NOT fact. An opinion can be a virtual certainty, completely off base, based in reality or delusional, but it is most certainly not fact. For example, "Zach Greinke will resign with us/not resign with us after this year," the "Brewers will be competitive/terrible next year" etc are all statements of opinion, not fact.

It's in everyone's best interest to remember the differences between the two when posting. No one's opinions are fact, one way or another. Please don't represent them as such.

Thanks!

Atleast the Brewers have copies of contracts to look at and don't need to rely on Fed Ex.

Melvin is keeping his negotiations incredibly tight lipped.

Fedex guy added a couple extra pages to the contract

Most teams are backing away from trading for Greinke as it seems a lock that the Brewers will sign him in the offseason. Reports are that his teammates said he likes Milwaukee, and that since Braun signed a long term discounted deal, Greinke will probably do the same. That, and the Brewers will defintely contend down the road, far more than the Angels, Rangers, or Braves, that's for certain.

I am crossing my fingers that a deal gets done today. Greinke is scheduled to start on Sunday, and I have to believe any team trading for him wants to maximize what they get from him so they won't want him to miss a start. Given Greinke's anxiety issues, I would assume that the sooner he gets to his new team and gets acclimated and familiar to the new coaching staff and players, the more comfortable he'll be. I can't imagine the Rangers (or whoever) trading for him Sunday morning, throwing him on a plane so he arrives 90 minutes before game time, tossing a jersey on him and saying, "Go give us 7 good innings."

I just noticed this from a MLBTR post last night:

  • The Angels will have to look in-house for help when it comes to their starting rotation, writes Alden Gonzalez of MLB.com. A source with knowledge of the team's thinking described the Angels' chances of acquiring a starter as "below average and diminishing" as the asking prices are too high and the competition for pitching is intense.

That's interesting to me, as that's the first mention I've seen of the Angels not being in on a big SP addition. Perhaps Melvin wasn't too intrigued by Segura... or maybe the Angels didn't want to make him available...?

The same post leads with a link to the following tweet from Jerry Crasnick, who echoes some of the thoughts in this thread that it's been quiet lately -- a little... TOO... quiet:

I just get the sense the #Rangers are focused on something big -- like a Greinke or Josh Johnson. They've been too quiet.

EDIT: In fact, thinking this over a little more... the Angels, all of a sudden & kinda late in the day yesterday, are now out of the bidding for a big SP addition. Rumors also going around that the Josh Johnson asking price may be 'too expensive'. And now radio silence from both TEX & MIL. The Rangers all along have seemed like the most likely destination for Greinke, and at this point I think all signs point to that coming true.

Can I ask what is so special about Perez?

Since signing for $580,000 in 2007, Perez has rocketed through the system and developed into one of the game's premier lefthanded pitching prospects. He reached Double-A at age 18 and finally mastered that level in his third stint at Frisco last year, then was the youngest pitcher in the Triple-A Pacific Coast League when he was promoted there in mid-July. Scouts rave about Perez's picture-perfect delivery and arm action that evoke comparisons to fellow Venezuelan lefty Johan Santana. There aren't many pitchers who can match Perez's pure stuff, as he has the makings of three above-average pitches. His lively fastball sits at 90-96 mph with sink, though he needs to work on establishing it more early in counts. He also throws a plus-plus 80-82 mph fading changeup and a sharp 73-77 mph curveball with good depth. Wavering command and inconsistency with his secondary pitches have held Perez back slightly. The Rangers have discussed adding a slider to give him a breaking ball that he can better control. Despite his smallish frame, they aren't worried about his durability. For all the attention given to his struggles in his first two years in Double-A and in his 10 PCL starts, Perez got to Triple-A at age 20. He needs additional seasoning at Round Rock but should contribute in Texas at some point in 2012. Added to the 40-man roster in Nobember, he profiles as a No. 2 starter

.

I think he's a boom or bust prospect but I love his arm.

It's good news for the Brewers if the prospects being bantered about are too good for the Angels to compete.

This is just getting ridiculous; someone needs to leak something so we have something to talk about

Bad news from Jason Stark:

The Braves may not have announced on anybody's radio show that they've moved on with Zack Greinke, the way they did for Ryan Dempster, but they are telling teams that they're turning their focus away from the rotation and are shopping more for bullpen and bench pieces. That would be an indication they have no interest in dealing Julio Teheran for a rental player. It's also an indication that they will have a tough time convincing themselves they can re-sign Greinke in the wake of the Cole Hamels contract.

(But also good news, because it means Melvin is not backing down from wanting a lot. Could also just be negotiating ploy by Braves.)

Or it could mean Greinke to Texas is all but done. Both the Angels and Braves suddenly "moving on" from looking for rotation help.

Actually it could mean anything of nothing - that what makes this all fun

Yeah -- it could mean that Melvin's been so unreasonable in his asking price for ZG (something he never seems to do) that he's scared off ATL & LAA. Or it could be posturing, like SRB noted. Or it could be that a deal with the Rangers is basically done, & teams like LAA & ATL are forced to look elsewhere.

More elaboration on Angels indicating Greinke might be out of their range. I hope it means that they just can't match the awesome package we're getting from Texas. Worst case, I guess it could mean that they're not willing to offer more than Richards and Bourjos and Melvin understandably told them to drop dead.

I feel that other teams fans are not looking realistically at Greinke's impact. I feel that there are perhaps 5 to 7 other pitchers I would want out there in a one game matchup......

If that is the case, some of these teams are really under-reaching when it comes to their packages....for Atlanta, a place that he is said to admire balks at including Terehan I really wonder what they are thinking.....if I was a Braves fan sitting home on October 15th looking at the very beatable Nationals moving on because Strasburg outdueled 37 year old "ace" Tim Hudson I would look back with some serious regret aimed toward Frank Wren - who supposedly is on the hot seat......Wren's inaction is going to cost him bigtime.
